    WELCOME
To the Knox County GenWeb page. My name is Wanda Irby and I am the GenWeb Project sponsor for this page. I am currently searching for genealogical sources in Knox County and also looking for volunteers willing to look up information. It is a rural county and the county seat is the tiny town of Benjamin. I believe that all records are kept by the County Clerk's office and they may be addressed just to Benjamin, Texas 79505. The Historical Society also did a cemetery project and each town has a copy of the burials in their towns. A copy is in the Court House in an area set aside for the Historical Society. I believe the County Clerk also has access to these records but very likely will not have time to search them. I would like to find someone in these towns to do this: Benjamin, Goree, Munday, Knox City, Rhineland and Vera. If anyone knows of other information sources for Knox County or if you will volunteer to help with lookups in Knox County, please e-mail meat wanda@cyberstation.net

    THE NEW COURTHOUSE
    THE OLD COURTHOUSE

History has seen four courthouses in Taylor County. The first was in Buffalo Gap, Texas , the original
location of the County Seat. When the railroad was constructed through Abilene, bypassing
Buffalo Gap, it was only a few months until the growth of Abilene indicated its future as the
metropolitian center of the county. Not without a lot of hard feelings and threats from both sides,
the county seat was moved to Abilene. The original courthouse has been restored and is part of
the "Historical Village" in Buffalo Gap. Of course a new courthouse was constructed in Abilene and I
will eventually find a suitable picture of the building and put it on this site.
In 1914 the first "Abilene" courthouse was razed to make room for a new and modern courthouse. It is
currently as pictured above and labeled "Old Courthouse". It still houses some of the county offices. In the late 1960s a location just west and across the street was selected for a new courthouse. It turned out to be a good location and a very impressive facility was completed in 1972. The photograph labeled

Forty-five families, totaling 143 persons, arrived in New York aboard the SS City of Antwerp on April 9, 1867. This group of Polish Emigrants settled primarily in Waverly (southeast Walker County). They contributed greatly to this part of Walker County. The Waverly Emigration Society was established by planters in this area to recruit workers on the plantations following the Civil War. This is the 135th Anniversary of the arrival of this group.
