Inside a small, polished-wood court-room of the restored Gonzales County courthouse, county judges, chief appraisers, and assorted water and utility district representatives stole a glimpse into their future. Aerial photographs, satellite data, and computer technology were combined to make intelligent maps with the power to predict flood damage, analyze crime data and evaluate property values. It was spring, and counties like DeWitt, Gonzales, Victoria, and others were still cleaning up behind the October 1998 floods. “We’ve had several 100-year floods just in the last 10 years. The flood plain was established a long time ago, but it doesn’t appear to match what gets wet. We need a way to pinpoint where flooding really occurs,” said Gonzales County Judge David Bird. Handbook of Texas Geography Texas is a state of tremendous physical diversity. Because of the many differences in Texas's natural environment, geographers divide the state into four natural regions-the Coastal Plains, the North Central Plains, the Great Plains, and the Mountains and Basins. The Coastal Plains in Texas's largest natural region and is home to two out of every three Texans. A plentiful water supply and fertile land make this region agriculturally productive and the prime location of major cities such as Dallas and Houston. In the North Central Plains, rolling hills, valleys, and grasses make the area well suited for ranching. The Great Plains is a high, dry region. An important natural feature of this region is the Edwards Aquifer, the water level of which in recent years has dropped as a result of the enormous amounts of water pumped from it to supply the city of San Antonio. Preservation of this aquifer has become an important concern. The westernmost region in Texas, the Mountains and Basins, is part of the Rocky Mountains system. The great canyons and mountain plateaus of this region attract many tourists. The people and cultures of Texas are similarly diverse. The state's main ethnic groups include Anglo Americans, Hispanic Americans, and African Americans. Native Americans were the first culture group in Texas, but by the late 1700s soldiers and Catholic clergy from Spain had founded forts and missions in the state. In 1821 Mexico-and Texas-gained independence from Spain, and in 1836 Texas won independence from Mexico. Texas joined the United States as the twenty-eighth state in 1845. Today, Texas enjoys a strong, modern economy. With its diverse population, skilled workforce, and rich resources, Texas has a bright future in the global community.

Steen Library will receive a grant from their fund in the amount of $300,599 which does not include the 10% library matching funds. This is the first TIF grant awarded specifically to Steen Library. To view all grants awarded under the Library 8 requirements, click on the Library 8 grant link on the TIF web site. The grant will cover replacement costs for Personal Computers in the LINC (student work stations in the library), Reference Desk, Reference Search Stations on the second floor, Inter Library Loan, Circulation desk, and for two new classrooms. In addition, the library will be adding 30 new computers for one of the new classrooms. The grant also covers upgrading the library's operating system to Windows 2000 as well as data projectors and Smart Boards for the classrooms. Renovations to the classrooms will be accomplished using library funds. The new classrooms will be used for the Information Literacy program and situated on the first and second floors. William Trout Chambers Papers Home Collections Personal Chambers 1926-1986 Table of Contents History Inventory HISTORY William Trout Chambers was born November 14, 1896, in Sullivan County, Indiana. Chambers received a B.A. degree from Indiana State Teachers College and his master's and doctor's degrees from the University of Chicago. Upon completion of his doctorate, he joined the Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College in 1926 as the first SEA faculty member to hold a Ph.D degree. He came to Texas with very little knowledge of the state to find on his arrival that he was scheduled to teach a course on Texas geography that semester and there was no text book. A determined Dr. Chambers started studying Texas geography in order to be able to teach it. In 1927, he added the first course in conservation to the geography curriculum at SEA. Dr. Chambers wrote many articles and essays concerning Texas and the United States and a few on other parts of the world. His work stresses the effects of geography on man and his civilization. Dr. Chambers wrote the first book on Texas geography entitled The Geography of Texas . It was pub lished in 1946 by Steck Publishers and was adopted by the State Board for use in public schools. In this first geography of Texas, Dr. Chambers divided Texas into twelve regions based on soil, bedrock, climate, and vegetation. He later wrote several other books on Texas Geography. Chambers was also a rock collector, and by 1961, he had a collection of about 300 specimens .
