Ability of Texas K-12 Teachers to Use the WWW Researcher: Ric Jensen Problem: The World Wide Web (WWW) is an exciting technology that may dramatically change the way water resources education is taught in public schools. The WWW has been in existence only a short time. It is important to measure if Texas teachers are interested in using the WWW for classroom instruction, and to assess the number of schools now using the WWW for classroom teaching. Creators of WWW sites intended for K-12 education need feedback on the perceived usefulness of their sites from classroom teachers. Exposing K-12 teachers to innovative WWW sites may hasten the use of the Internet because teachers will be more likely to "surf the web" after they have seen creative and useful home pages. Objectives: 1) To assess the ability and willingness of Texas K-12 teachers to use water resources information from the WWW for classroom instruction, 2) to evaluate the usefulness of the TWRI WWW site (Texas WaterNet), and 3) to determine if use of Texas WaterNet has increased since TWRI visited schools and demonstrated use of the WWW to teachers. Even before Texas became a Republic, the frontier homesteaders cited in their Declaration of Independence the necessity for good schools, pointing out that "unless a people are educated and enlightened, it is idle to expect the continuance of civil liberty or the capacity for self-government." Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas, took this to heart and advocated that the Texas Legislature set aside public land for schools and a university. The words of the early settlers have endured. They are heard more loudly than ever today, as the citizenry of the Lone Star State look toward a drastically changing knowledge-based economy and global order in the twenty-first century. As UT President Larry Faulkner puts it, "The effectiveness of Texas as a society in the years to come is going to be very dependent on the educational attainments of its citizens." It's a realization that dawned on him after his arrival in Austin in 1998, and he identified six goals for his administration. Included on that list, in keeping with the university's core purpose "to transform lives for the benefit of society," is outreach to Texas public schools to help improve academic achievement and graduation rates.

The Virtual High Schools Lists Algebra Across The Wire The UT TeleLearning Center (UTTLC) at the University of Texas at Austin delivers six high school classes by audioconferencing . The classes include Health Science Technology Education, TeleLanguage (Spanish and German), TeleRap (a roundtable discussion for teenagers), and a special migrant student program called Algebra Across the Wire. All courses are approved by the Texas Education Agency, count toward graduation, and fulfill Texas essential elements.
