Overview Announcements Admission Criteria ... Education Teacher Certification Search Department:
TEACHER CERTIFICATION IN TEXAS Abilene Christian University operates a state accredited or approved program for teacher preparation. As such we are authorized to recommend individuals who satisfactorily complete our program to the State Board for Educator Certification for certification as Texas teachers. This is important because Texas State Law requires local school boards to employ as teachers only those individuals who possess a Texas teacher certificate. The traditional undergraduate student may obtain a teacher certificate by completing the approved teacher education program at Abilene Christian University or any other approved program in the State of Texas. After completing the approved program the student must pass the ExCET or TExES exams and apply through the certification office to the State Board for Educator Certification for the appropriate teacher certificate. There are other ways for individuals other than the traditional undergraduates to obtain a Texas teacher certificate. One such group consists of individuals who have previously attended college but for one reason or another do not possess a Bachelor's degree. These persons are referred to as non-traditional undergraduate students and are older than the traditional undergraduate. Abilene Christian University has a Bachelor of Applied Studies (BAS) program for these returning students in which some of their life experiences may be used toward their Bachelor's degree in most cases. When these BAS students elect to use teaching as their major they often have to graduate before they student teach due to the university's limit on the number of semester hours that may be counted toward a Bachelor's degree. This necessitates attending for a semester after graduating in order to student teach, pass required exams and apply for teacher certification.

While Alternative certification may be a fast route to full teacher certificationin texas, it may not the quickest route to initial employment.

Alternative Teacher Certification: Summary of Resources
(GLARRC Information Management and Services gathered these resources, in response to an information request) June 2001
Alternative Teacher Certification Currently, 41 states plus the District of Columbia report having some type of alternative teacher certification program. Estimates say 125,000 people have been licensed through alternative certification programs. Effective alternative certification programs include:
  • Strong academic coursework component; Field-based programs; Candidates work with a qualified mentor teacher; Candidates go through the program in cohorts; Programs are a collaborative effort among state departments of education, colleges and universities, and school districts.
A 1999 survey of Institutions of Higher Education that have programs for the preparation of teachers conducted by the Center for Education Information, found that nearly three out of 10 (28 percent) prospective new teachers who completed teacher preparation in 1998 in college-based programs began their preparation to teach after they had already received at least a bachelor’s degree. More than one-third (36 percent) of persons admitted into Teacher Preparation Programs at the Post-baccalaureate level and 14 percent of those admitted as Undergraduates within the past year had prior teaching-related experience, such as substitute teacher, teacher’s aide, or school paraprofessional.

U.T. Dallas offers a rigorous teacher certification curriculum and has built an outstanding reputation for producing excellent teachers. Coursework and field experiences leading to teacher certification are planned and implemented through the Teacher Development Center (972-883-2730) in coordination with the schools in the relevant disciplines. A model is used which calls upon the total resources of the institution rather than relying on a school of education. Content and procedures of these curricula have been reviewed by the State Board for Educator Certification and the Dallas Teacher Education Council or the Northeast Texas Suburban Teacher Education Council. Initial teaching certificates may be earned by undergraduates, concurrently with their degree studies, or by graduates from this or other institutions. Additional teaching field(s) and/or endorsements may be added to valid certificates presently held. As of September 1, 1999, all Texas teaching credentials must be renewed every five years.
