The Unofficial Walt Disney Imagineering Page has joined with amazon.com , the well known Internet bookseller, to make books about Imagineering, theme park design, and other topics available to visitors to this site. In addition, you can use the search box at the bottom of the page to search for other titles and subjects. I have purchased books from amazon.com on several occasions and have always had a great experience. Amazon.com offers substantial discounts on titles, so if you have been looking to acquire any of these titles, amazon.com is the place to go! There are many books that may be of interest to you:
Books about Walt Disney Imagineering, Disney Architecture, Ride Engineering, and Careers
  • A Brush with Disney : An Artist's Journey Told Through the Words and Works of Herbert Dickens Ryman . This book is simply phenomenal. Herb Ryman worked for WDI for several decades, drawing the first aerial view of Disneyland (which Walt used to explain to the bankers what he was dreaming of doing) right up to concept art for Tokyo Disneyland. This book contains many, many gems from WDI's library, but it also traces Ryman's growth as an artist. In fact, you don't even get into the Disney material until half way through the book. It's an expensive purchase, but worth every penny. In the concept paintings for Disneyland and Walt Disney World (including Epcot) you can feel the magic behind the ideas that just doesn't translate into reality. Prepare to get goosebumps!

Uniting a roster of authors chosen from wide-ranging disciplines, this study is the first to examine the influence of Disneyland on both our built environment and our architectural imagination. Tracing the relationship of the Disney parks to their historical forebears, it charts Disneyland's evolution from one man's personal dream to a multinational enterprise, a process in which the Disney "magic" has moved ever closer to the real world. Editor Karal Ann Marling, Professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, draws upon her pioneering work in the Disney archives to reconstruct and analyze the intentions and strategies behind the parks. She is joined by Marty Sklar, Vice Chairman and Principal Creative Executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, historian Neil Harris, art historian Erika Doss, geographer Yi-Fu Tuan, critic Greil Marcus, and architect Frank Gehry to provide a unique perspective on one of the great post-war American icons. The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks
Opens March 17, 2001 at the National Building Museum

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks, a major exhibition exploring the evolution of the Disney theme parks, will open at the National Building Museum on March 17, 2001 . The exhibition traces the development of each sector of the parks themselves - Main Street, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland, and examines EPCOT’s simulated worlds and the real world architecture of Disney’s hotels and retailing shops. The exhibition will be on view through August 5, 2001.
Organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal and curated by Karal Ann Marling, professor of art history and American studies at the University of Minnesota, the exhibition will present nearly 350 objects selected from the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering. The artifacts include plans, drawings, paintings and models for the parks and their attractions; posters, prints and advertisements used to promote the parks; and historical photographs of the projects.
The exhibition has been designed to reflect Disneyland itself. At the original park in Anaheim - and those in Orlando, Tokyo and the outskirts of Paris - the "magic kingdom" is separated from the outside world. An entrance avenue, Main Street, leads straight to a plaza (known as "the hub") from which visitors visit each of the cinematic "lands," distinguished by a vertical landmark (known as a "wienie") drawing visitors toward it. The greatest of the wienies is the symbol of Disneyland itself, the Castle, which serves as the entrance to Fantasyland.

Customer Reviews A wonderful look into the builiding of Disney's Parks!
This is a wonderful book for those Disney fans who want to know more about the history of the Disney Theme Parks. There are a lot interesting pictures; some never even seen. Very well detailed and interesting reading. All of those 'curious-types' should buy this book! Pretty Darn Good
I bought this book and thought it was highly enjoyable. It never ceases to amaze me that for some reason, some folks tend to think that when Disney builds anything, they are trying to build things that are meant to be perfect. The last time I checked, Disney was in the business of building theme parks, not the Taj Mahal or Biltmore House. They are simply building things that are fun, period. This book does illustrate this quite well. The book has great art and the text is easy to read yet not insulting. Hey, if you like Disney or amusement parks or even really fun design/architecture, then check this book out. If you are just out to criticize etc., give us all a break and move on.

Engaging Thoughts about Disney Many books on Disney's art and achitecture try to convey its appeal primarily through the visual. Other books, particularly those that whole-heartedly criticize Disney, try to ignore the appeal of Disney altogether. This book attempts to integrate the visual evidence (photos, concept art) with academic writing on Disney (Karal Ann Marling, Erika Doss, Greil Marcus, etc.). Together, these aspects make for a solid inquiry as to the appeal of Disney's architecture.

Disneyland has been a powerful symbol of contemporary American culture from the moment it opened on July 17, 1955. Just as Disney's theme parks have expanded around the globe, their architectural strategies have spread far beyond the park enclosures. Disney's style has suggested a new approach to the "real-world" architecture of the shopping mall and the resort, and has subtly changed public expectations of the cityscape. As a result, Disneyland has been a lasting subject of controversy and debate. Celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of the consumer society, "Disneyland" has become a watchword in the cultural battleground between "high" and "low," a metaphor for America's entertainment culture, and a synonym for what trivializes or sentimentalizes the world around us.
This exhibition casts a fresh eye on critical aspects of modern America's architectural culture-its promises, its roots and offshoots, and its unparalleled worldwide impact. Organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) and curated by Karal Ann Marling, Professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks presents 350 never-before-seen architectural drawings, models, paintings, and plans for the parks and their attractions from the archives of Walt Disney Imagineering.
Also on view is a selection of works from California photographer Catherine Wagner's CCA-commissioned visual essay on the four Disney theme parks-Anaheim, Orlando, Tokyo, and Paris. These photographs reinforce the parks' fiction of reality by multiplying the optical illusions, shifting scale, and manipulating color.

"DESIGNING DISNEY'S THEME PARKS"
Edited by Karal Ann Marling ISBN Number: Format: Hardback, 223 pages Publisher: Flammarion Date: Price: Number in stock: SOLD From the day it opened in July 1955, in an event given live TV coverage, Disneyland has been a key symbol of contemporary American culture. It has been both celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of consumer society, a harbinger of shopping mall culture, a symbol of American hegemony in entertainment, the epitome of fantasy, simulation, pastiche, and the blurring of distinctions between reality and mass media imagery. Yet for all the power of Disneyland as metaphor, almost no one has discussed the making of this unique place, with its far-flung colonies in Florida, Japan and France. Written to accompany an exhibition at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, Designing Disney's Theme Parks: The Architecture of Reassurance is the first book to look behind the myths of Disneyland.

Window on China A first trip to Window on China reminds visitors of the famous novel Gulliver's Travels. What really catches their eye is not little people but the astonishing accuracy of the 1:25th scale replicas of some of the world's most famous buildings. Located in Lungtan (..) near Shihmen Dam some 50 kilometers south of Taipei, Window on China is a marvelous miniature world that was originally designed to provide an overview of traditional Chinese buildings in mainland China and Taiwan, as well as to illustrate modern Taiwanese architecture. Window on China was established 11 years ago when theme parks were not very popular yet and tourist sites were just developing in Taiwan. The chairman of the park, C. H. Chu, recalls when he began thinking of doing something special for tourism in Taiwan. He started researching theme parks around the world. As his model, he chose the Madurodam in the Netherlands, a 'Lilliputian' world illustrating the daily activities of Netherlanders. Then he began to carry out his dream. From the beginning there were difficulties. Obtaining the original blueprints and construction diagrams of the buildings from mainland China proved frustrating. Chu set up a research group to gather data from Taiwan, Japan, and elsewhere, but not all the members of the group had the appropriate academic or architectural training; many had construction experience only. Strict attention to detail as well as intense trial and experimentation went into the creation of the faithful miniature replicasdown to the accuracy of the living trees, shrubs, and tiny figures.

    THE ARCHITECTURE OF REASSURANCE:
MICKEY MOUSE AT THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM
Designing the Disney Theme Parks June 19 – October 10, 1999 The Andy Warhol Museum By Karal Ann Marling I n 1981, Andy Warhol created a memorable series of images depicting Mickey Mouse, American icon. Or, as Warhol called him in the title of a group of four Mickeys embedded in a field of celestial blue, a myth: Myths: Mickey Mouse. That there are four Mickeys in Warhol's seminal painting suggests the ubiquity of the mouse which, according to company mythology, was invented by Walt Disney in 1927 on a westbound train, after Disney's New York distributor stole the rubbery rabbit who was his current cartoon star. Mickey's virtue was that he was only a couple of circles perched on pipestem legs, a composition easily drawn by anybody with a pencil; the business of making animated cartoons was an assembly line process, a commercial art alluded to in Andy Warhol's multiple Mickeys, laid down on canvas with a silkscreen that facilitated the act of factory-like replication. There was, strictly speaking, no Mickey—only Mickeys. Lots of 'em. As the persona of Mickey Mouse evolved through the years, he became rounder and rounder, as plump as a cream-filled doughnut, and as soft as a sofa cushion. The circles circumscribed Mickey psychologically, inhibiting the development of his character on the one hand while making him into a kind of universal symbol of happiness and innocence on the other. Finally, it became almost impossible to make an interesting Mickey Mouse cartoon because the hero was just too darned nice: he could only smile and giggle when Andy Warhol painted him in sets of two and four, or all alone, as a portrait bust with a bright red background, isolated, frozen, and turned into into myth by his own undeviating pattern of sweet, suggestive circles. Breasts. Puffy clouds. Lollipops. And everything nice.

Here is the program for the Summer, 1998: Building a Dream: Art of Disney Architecture
    By Beth Dunlop
New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1996
    GV
The name Disney sometimes evokes somewhat questionable architecture. Beth Dunlop does much to dispel this notoriety in Building a Dream . Dunlop does not avoid critical issues. Right at the start, for example, she takes on the issue of "theme" as in "theme park." She makes it clear that architecture has always been about themes, ergo, it is unfair to accuse Disney for doing what so many of his more distinguished predecessors have done in the past, that is, deploying thematic programs. Her basic argument here is that the abstract modernists have rejected such symbolic and narrative resources just as pictorial models had rejected representation—much to their collective peril.
To wit, Disney forged a new architectural idiom whereby many buildings could be arranged in relation to each other to shape a whole place. Disney’s architectural magic was rooted in erecting buildings that drew upon themes derived from the depths of American consciousness, like the "Wild West," or "Main Street" or the romanticized Europe of our immigrant forebears. With Epcot, Disney paid homage to the American obsession with science and technology, "Tomorrowland,"—the apotheosis of Yankee ingenuity.
