23. Introduction To The Five Principal Spiritual Traditions Of Tibet
From the government of tibet in Exile.
http://www.tibet.com/Buddhism/budintro.html
Introduction to the Five Principal Spiritual Traditions of Tibet
Tradition has it that Tibet is the land of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and the Tibetan people are his descendants. They trace their ancestry to the copulation of an ape, an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, and an ogress, an emanation of the goddess Tara, whose progeny gave birth to the Tibetan people in the Yarlung valley. Buddhism became Tibet's state religion only later. Introduced for the first time in 173 C.E., during the reign of King Lha Thothori Nyantsen, it was gradually assimilated, disseminated and finally integrated into the Tibetan way of life due initially to the efforts of the religious kings. King Song Tsen Gampo took control of the kingdom at the age of thirteen and built Rasa Trulnang Tsuglag Kbang and Ramoche Tsuglag Khang two temples in Lhasa. He sent his minister Thonmi Sambhota to India to learn Sanskrit and writing, and as a result a Tibetan script was then modelled one of those current in India. He invited Acharya Kumara and Brahmin Shankara from India and the Nepalese Acharya Shilmanju, who began the propagation and translation of the Buddha's teachings. Although there was neither conspicuous nor extensive study of Buddhist doctrine, the king himself gave instructions to many fortunate people, mostly concerning the teachings of the Arya Avalokiteshvara. During the reign of King Trisong Deutsen, Buddhism was spread with great zeal after he had invited the Abbot Shantarakshita and Acharya Padmasambhava to Tibet. The task of translating Buddha's teachings was carried out with great vigour and enthusiasm. It is said that altogether one hundred and eight Indian scholars were engaged with Tibetan translators in the work of translating Buddhist literature into Tibetan. They also took part in establishing monasteries.

[an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive] Welcome to Tibet Highlights:
Invaded by China in 1949-50, the independent country of Tibet was forced to face the direct loss of life that comes from battles and, soon after, the loss of universal freedoms that stemmed from Communist ideology and its programs such as the Cultural Revolution (1967 - 1976). However, it is erroneous to believe that the worst has passed. The fate of Tibet's unique national, cultural and religious identity is today seriously threatened and manipulated by the Chinese. China's policy of occupation and oppression has resulted in no more or less than the destruction of Tibet's national independence, culture and religion, environment, and the universal human rights of its people. China has broken international laws and routinely violates its own constitution by inflicting this destruction, yet time and again goes without punishment.
NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE With a written history of more than 2000 years, Tibet existed as an independent sovereign state prior to Chinese rule. As recently as 1914, a peace convention was signed by Britain, China and Tibet that again formally recognised Tibet as a fully independent country. But having no representation in the United Nations, the world largely stood by and allowed China's occupation and destruction to happen.

The museum features our main exhibition, "A long look homeward". It is divided into two sections: the first floor presents the Chinese occupation of Tibet and its results, and the second one displays Tibet’s past and hopes for its future.
In addition, the museum hosts a memorial for the 1.2 million Tibetans who died as a result of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, a remembrance and hope butter-lamp display, and a testimony corner where Tibetans can provide names of relatives and friends who died as a result of the Chinese occupation.
The small lecture hall is used for showing various historical films on Tibet, lectures and presentations relating to Tibetan history and culture.
Catering to the diverse audience of visitors to Dharamsala, all the textual presentations in the museum are given in three languages: Tibetan, English and Hindi.
The Tibet Museum is more than a space for exhibitions, installations and lectures. It also provides a platform for educational activities relating to Tibetan history - through in-house activities and special events, traveling museum kits, catalogs, and various other publications.

The Dalai Lama: Spiritual and Political Leader of 6 Million Tibetans
DHARAMSALA, INDIA Behind tinted glasses, his warm brown eyes welcome the traveler like an old friend. He gestures to a cushioned chair, then settles into a similar one within arm's reach of the sojourner. Surrounding him are ornate burgundy carpets and gold statues passed down over centuries. His soft, gentle face cloaks the hardships as spiritual and political leader of more than 6 million Tibetans, and of one who has lived 32 years in exile in the Himalayan foothills of India. He wears his title 14th Dalai Lama like his loosely fitting maroon monk's robes. People revere him as a god-king, a living Buddha, but he's very mortal. He's friendly, funny, warm, frank, opinionated. For someone so surrounded by pomp and circumstance, he hates formality. He sometimes throws back his head in deep, resonant laughter. Other times, pondering his response, he presses his hand against his chin and his forehead crumples into deeply etched lines. "The formality, I do not like. Useless," says the 57-year-old Dalai Lama, whose speech often is devoid of subjects, verbs and articles and is very much to the point.

    Tibet's government-in-exile says lama's flight a surprise
    January 9, 2000
Web posted at: 6:13 p.m. HKT (1013 GMT) DHARMSALA, India (CNN) Aides to the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader, denied any involvement in the flight of Tibet's third-ranking religious leader from China last week. The 14-year-old Karmapa Lama the only leader of Chinese- occupied Tibet approved by both the Dalai Lama and Beijing made a guarded public appearance on Saturday and has met twice with the Dalai Lama since his trek across the Himalayas to India. "Since his arrival, our main concern is his health," said Tashi Wangdi, Minister of Religion and culture for the exiled Tibetan government in the Indian city of Dharmsala. "It was a long and difficult journey, and the whole flight was a very traumatic experience, because he is only 14 years old."

    1. Tibet exiled government upset by S. Korean ban on Dalai Lama (AFP)
NEW DELHI, Oct 30 (AFP) - Tibet's exiled government voiced its regret Monday at
South Korea's decision to block a scheduled visit by the Dalai Lama in November.
"It is certainly a disappointment," said the exiled administration's culture and
    religious affairs minister Tashi Wangdi.
"I think the Korean government is being over-cautious," Wangdi told AFP by phone
from his government's headquarters in the northern Indian hill town of
    Dharamsala.
The South Korean foreign ministry said Monday it had decided that a visit by the
Dalai Lama would not be "appropriate" this year.
Foreign ministry spokesman Lee Nam-Soo did not specify the reasons for the ban,
but officials cited Beijing's strong protest against contacts with the Tibetan spiritual leader. The Chinese government considers the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, as a "separatist" bent on "splitting Tibet from the motherland."

"If people walk in and want to stay on for a while, they can be allowed to stay," Fernandes told reporters Sunday. "If one has come to our country and wants to stay, there is no violation of anything." However, Fernandes said the Karmapa who arrived in India on January 5 after an eight-day, 1,400-kilometer (875-mile) trek across the snow-covered Himalayas with five of his followers has not asked for asylum.
