Facts on Tibet The history of Tibet
Legend tells the Tibetan history starts with a monkey and a siren. The monkey was sent by Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezi) for religious retreat on the high plateau. The siren managed to persuade him to marry her. Having the permission of Avalokiteshvara, they married and had 6 children. They were believed to be the ancestor of the Tibetan people. However, archeology and geology discovery makes ethnologists believe Tibetans are decedents of aborigines and nomadic Qiang tribes. According to archeological discovery, Tibetan history can be traced to 4,000 years ago.
In 1951, Tibet was peacefully liberated under the 17-point Agreement on Measures for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet. Hundreds of thousands serfs were liberated from the yoke of serfdom. Tours Booking Tibet FAQs About Us ... Forum

Early History
Over the centuries the Yarlung Zangbo valley was the focus of ancient trade routes from India, China, and central Asia. Tibet emerged from an obscure history to flourish in the 7th cent. A.D.
Foreign Contacts
During the 18th cent., British authorities in India attempted to establish relations with Lhasa, but the Gurkha invasion of 1788 and the subsequent Gurkha war (1792) with Tibet brought an abrupt end to the rapprochement. Jesuits and Capuchins had visited Tibet in the 17th and 18th cent., but throughout the 19th cent. Tibet maintained its traditional seclusion. Meanwhile, Ladakh , long part of Tibet, was lost to the rulers of Kashmir, and Sikkim was detached (1890) by Britain. In 1893, Britain succeeded in obtaining a trading post at Yadong, but continued Tibetan interference led to the military expedition (1904) of Sir Francis

  • Map to the Yoga Room In May of 1995 I became acquainted with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan situation through an organization called PeaceJam. That summer I participated in my first of two retreats with His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Because of his gentle nature and wisdom I have been drawn not only to the Tibetan situation but also to study Tibetan Buddhism. For me, Tibet is and was the only civilization left where all or most of their culture revolved around religion and its practice. The death and dying of Tibetan culture is a world tragedy because we rarely see cultures dedicated to spiritual fulfillment. Please read more about Tibet, the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan situation from the links below. Also, for your own enlightenment, read any book by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. [tibettravel/in/menu.htm] History of Ngari Dezogun followed his father's suit and became the head of Guge. The areas they ruled were called Burang Kingdom, Guge Kingdom and Ladakh Kingdom. Burang was described as a place where clouds meet, Guge (Zhabyran, and now Zhada) a place where clouds curve, and Moyu (Ladakh - Rutog) a place where clouds stand the highest. Henceforth, the large and small Yangtung areas, which were under the jurisdiction of the former Tubo Kingdom, were renamed "Ngari" (it means the three parts of Ngari). In later days, the three parts were gradually annexed by the Guge Kingdom established by Dezogun. Together with Tibet, the Guge Kingdom came under the jurisdiction of the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368) in the 13th century, subordinate to the Pacification Commissioners General Office in the Three Regions of U, Tsang and Ngari. The charges of specific affairs in the Ngari region were turned over to the Sagya local administration. The Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) basically followed the system of the Yuan Dynasty in terms of governing Tibet. After the fifth Dalai Lama established the Gandain Phodrang regime, Ngari was gradually incorporated into Gaxag (a local government of Tibet) under the support of the Qing Administration. Later, Zong (equal to county) and Ngari Jikyab, governor of Ngari, were established in the region. Ngari Prefecture was established following the Democratic Reform in 1959.

    History of Tibet
The peaceful ancient land of Tibet, popularly known as the "Roof of the World" was until 1950 a free sovereign country with its own government, culture, language, religion and traditions very distinct from Tibet's neighbouring countries like China, Mongolia, India, Nepal to name the closest. Due to the sheer extreme remoteness of the country's location, geographically and ecologically, Tibet voluntarily remained isolated from the rest of the world for centuries and did not participate in any international affairs or world conferences. Thus when the Chinese Communist armies invaded Tibet in 1950, no international power came to rescue Tibet. Being a peaceful religious country by nature and also due to the young age of the ruler His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tibet was easily captured in 1959. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India to seek political asylum in 1959. Since the invasion, Tibetan culture and religion have been a target of cruel and systematic destruction throughout Tibet. Tibetan material culture in Tibet was almost exclusively devoted to religion, in which the arts of building, painting and image casting were highly developed.

    http://home.planetinternet.be/~xfrexulx/new_page_25.htm
History of Tibet before the Chinese Invasion of 1949 Tibet has a history dating back over 2.000 years. A good starting point in analyzing the country's status is the period referred to as Tibet's "Imperial age". When the entire country was first united under one ruler. There is no serious dispute over the existence of Tibet as an independent state during this period. Even China's own historical records and the treaties Tibet and China concluded during that period refer to Tibet as a strong state with whom China was forced to deal on a footing of equality. At what point of history, then, did Tibet cease to exist as a state to become an integral part of China? Tibet's history is not unlike that of other states. At times, Tibet extended its influence over neighboring countries and peoples and, in other periods, came itself under the influence of powerful foreign rulers - the Mongol Khans, the Gorkhas of Nepal, the Manchu emperors and the British rulers of India. It should be noted, before examining the relevant history, that international law is a system of law created by states primarily for their own protection. As a result, international law protects the independence of states from attempts to destroy it and, therefore, the presumption is in favor of the contintuation of statehood. This means that, where as an independent state that has existed for centuries, such as Tibet, does not need to prove its continued independence when challenged, a foreign state claiming sovereign rights over it needs to prove those rights by showing at what precise moment and by what legal means they where acquired.

"Toward a Free Tibet" is dedicated to the people of Tibet and to their continuing struggle toward regaining independence, and, at least, autonomy and self-determination. What the Tibetan people have endured at the hands of the Chinese government is almost unspeakable. But we must speak it. We must bring the facts to mainstream visibility.
When visiting some of the sites listed here, when reading the information and seeing the photos, you may find your eyes welling with tears. Not only have the Tibetan people been oppressed, but the land itself has been and is being exploited and irrevocably ravaged. What can other countries do to help? What can individuals do to help?
"Toward a Free Tibet" is an offering created out of love and respect for Tibet, its culture, and its people. It is a small but dedicated contribution to the world's growing awareness of Tibet's true history and its current situation, an awareness through which constructive change - even if occurring in small steps - must inevitably take place.

History Of Buddhism In Tibet A Glimpse At The History Of Buddhism: Tibet
Between the 7th and 9th centuries, the Tibetan empire was a dominant power in Asia. Tibet had wide authority throughout the Tarim region, which extended into Northern China and Nepal. During the reign of King Songtsen Gampo (born appx. 557 C.E.), a Tibetan script was created which permitted the translation of Buddhist Sanskrit texts into Tibetan. Many great translators over the following centuries performed the amazing feat of translating almost the entire corpus of Indian Buddhist texts into Tibetan. Buddhism Becomes Established In Tibet In the 8th century, under King Trisong Detsen, a wave of great Buddhist teachers traveled to Tibet from India. Incomparable masters such as Padmasambhava, Vairocana, Santaraksita and Vimalamitra spread the dharma throughout Tibet. The great monastic university of Samye was founded during at this time, and Buddhism became well established in Tibet. A few decades later, Buddhist practice in Tibet met with strong indigenous Tibetan opposition, and Buddhist practitioners were no longer supported by the government. However, Buddhist institutions gradually recovered and a second wave of translations and teachers came to India in 11th and 12th centuries.

History of Tibet The conflict between China and Tibet:
The rise of the Tibetanempire" was abruptly interrupted however, when one of the 9th Century rulers brought discordance into the country. For political reasons he suppressed the Tibetan Buddhism in favour of the original indigenous shamanistic Bon-religion and played the individual powers in his country off against each other. After his murder the kingdom declined into small rivalling princedoms. When, after two centuries of anarchy, Lamaism finally won through in the 11th century - as a form of Buddhism which incorporated elements of the Bon-religion a well as those from the Indian esoteric Tantra - the spiritual leaders gained political power.
