Time Zones
Dateline: 03/08/99 Prior to the late nineteenth century, time keeping was a purely local phenomenon. Each town would set their clocks to noon when the sun reached its zenith each day. A clockmaker or town clock would be the "official" time and the citizens would set their pocket watches and clocks to the time of the town - enterprising citizens would offer their services as mobile clock setters, carrying a watch with the accurate time to adjust the clocks in customer's homes on a weekly basis. Travel between cities meant having to change one's pocket watch upon arrival. However, once railroads began to operate and move people rapidly across great distances, time became much more critical. In the early years of the railroads, the schedules were very confusing because each stop was based on a different local time. The standardization of time was essential to efficient operation of railroads. In 1878, Canadian

Daylight Saving Time
by Matt T. Rosenberg Every spring we move our clocks one hour ahead and "lose" an hour during the night and each fall we move our clocks back one hour and "gain" an extra hour. But Daylight Saving Time (and not Daylight Savings Time with an "s") wasn't just created to confuse our schedules. The phrase "Spring forward, fall back" helps people remember how Daylight Saving time affects their clocks. At 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in April, we set our clocks forward one hour ahead of standard time ("spring forward"). We "fall back" at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday in October by setting our clock back one hour and thus returning to standard time. The change to Daylight Saving Time allows us to use less energy in lighting our homes by taking advantage of the longer and later daylight hours. During the six-and-a-half-month period of Daylight Saving Time, the names of time in each of the time zones in the U.S. changes as well. Eastern Standard Time (EST) becomes Eastern Daylight Time, Central Standard Time (CST) becomes Central Daylight Time (CDT), Mountain Standard Time (MST) becomes Mountain Daylight Tome (MDT), Pacific Standard Time becomes Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), and so forth.

International Date Line
Dateline: 06/08/98 Three years ago, the tiny Pacific Ocean country of Kiribati Here's how it works. Let's say you fly from Japan to the United States. You leave Japan on Monday morning but as you cross the Pacific Ocean, the day gets later quickly as you cross time zones. In addition, once you cross the International Date Line, the day changes to Sunday. On the reverse trip from the U.S. to Japan, let's suppose you leave on Tuesday morning. Since you're traveling west the time advances slowly thanks to time zones but once you cross the International Date Line, it's suddenly Wednesday. The International Date Line is not a straight line, either. Since its beginning, it has zigzagged to avoid spitting apart countries into two days. It bends through the Bering Strait to avoid placing far northeastern Russia in a different day than the rest of the country. Unfortunately, tiny Kiribati was split. So, in 1995 they decided to move the International Date Line. Since the line is simply established by international agreement and there are not treaties or formal agreements associated with the line, the rest of the world followed Kiribati and moved the line.

Lesson Plans Science Earth Understanding Time Zones Understanding Time Zones:
Overview:
It used to be that knowing the time zones for your country was enough. With the Internet and e-mail we find ourselves wondering what time it is in Austrailia and other parts of the world.
Teacher Preparation: Look up links to other websites. Cut a large sun out of yellow paper.
Procedure Ideas:
  • For younger students: create a room sized map by assigning each student a state name to write on a sheet of paper then have them go stand in the proper location for that state. They may need to consult a map or globe first. Divide them by timezones with strips of crepe paper or yarn. Then move the paper sun from one end of the room to the other to simulate the movement of the sun across the country. As you move, have them figure out the time for where they are standing.
  • Draw a 1 foot circle divided into 24 sections to make a graphic to place under a globe. Each section represents an hour of the day and rotating the globe shows the time for any given part of the world.

Working in Virtual Teams
Overcoming Time and Geography?
Following from the section on Virtual Organisations , this section will look at a different form of vitual group: The Virtual Team. The Encyclopedia from CALT at Insead offers a large selection of material that may be of general interest for this and other sections concerned with different types of virtual group. The concept of the virtual team is not clearly defined, and it often overlaps with notions such as the virtual or networked organization, the virtual workplace, virtual communities, electronic commerce and certain forms of teleworking. Virtual Teams are seen as essentially project or task focused groups. The team membership may be relatively stable (e.g. in an established sales team) or change on a regular basis (e.g. in project teams). Their members may be drawn from the same organization, (e.g. production planners and production operatives) or from several different organizations, (e.g. when projects involve consultants or external assessors). Further distinctions can be made on physical proximity, (i.e. whether or not team members are co-located and can interact face-to-face or are geographically separated) and by work-cycle synchronicity, (i.e. whether or not members interact in the same or different time periods). In contrast to home based work and telework For a further discussion of this topic, see

2) Maps, Remote Sensing, and GIS
(c) Map Location and Time Zones Before the late nineteenth century, time keeping was essentially a local phenomenon. Each town would set their clocks according to the motions of the sun. Noon was defined as the time when the sun would reached its maximum altitude above the horizon. Cities and towns would assign a clockmaker to calibrate a town clock to these solar motions. This town clock would then represent "official" time and the citizens would set their watches and clocks accordingly. The later half of the nineteenth century was time of increased movement of humans. In the United States and Canada, large numbers of people were moving west and settlements in these areas began expanding rapidly. To support these new settlements, railroads moved people and resources between the various cities and towns. However, because of the nature of how local time was kept, the railroads experience major problems in constructing timetables for the various stops. Timetables could only become more efficient if the towns and cities adopted some type of standard method of keeping time. In 1878, Canadian Sir Sanford Fleming suggested a system of worldwide time zones that would simplify the keeping of time across the Earth. Fleming proposed that the globe be divided into 24 time zones, each 15 degrees of longitude in width. Since the world rotates once every 24 hours on its axis and there are 360 degrees of longitude, each hour of Earth rotation represents 15 degrees of longitude.
