We measure the day by saying that the sun is at it's highest point at 12 o'clock, midday. Because the earth spins, as it travels around the sun, one half of the earth is in darkness and one half in light, all the time. This brings us to a problem. If it is midday where you are, on the opposite side of the earth, it is dark, so what time is it on the opposite side of the world?
Day and Night
Before time keeping and clocks were invented, people used to know approximately what time it was by watching the sun. If you look out of the window, at different times of the day, you will see that the sun is in a different place each time you look. This is the same everywhere in the world. Once clocks were invented, they simply had to look at a clock to know what time it was. The earth spins on an imaginary line known as its axis, this movement is known as

Sydenham High School Canadian Geography It's about TIME
By H. David Matthews and Mary Vincent - Canadian Geographic '99

We are a country of chronic lawbreakers. From east to west, Canada is
neatly divided into six time zones. But many Canadians choose to make their
own time and ignore the time zone boundaries. And the rule that clocks
spring forward on the first Sunday in April and fall back on the last Sunday
in October? In some parts of Canada, the times are never a-changin': we all
know that Saskatchewan doesn't use daylight savings, but other pockets of
the country don't bother with it either. And while Alberta's time-abiding
citizens strictly follow Mountain Time - violators can be slapped with a $25
fine - these maps illustrate Canada's time zone anomalies. The Northwest Territories has four time zones and no shortage of time zone quirks. The Canadian Forces station at Alert uses Eastern Time while the handful of residents at the Eureka weather station skip daylight savings. Baffin Island, which is crossed by the Central, Eastern and Atlantic Time zones only

The province of North Sulawesi with an area of 1,533,698 ha is located at 0º30"- 4º 3" North Latitude and 121º127" East Longitude. To the north the region borders on the Republic of the Philippines, Sulawesi Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The Eastern part is on the Maluku Sea and the Southern side is the Tomini Gulf. The western part borders Gorontalo Province, which until the end of 2000 was a part of North Sulawesi and then became an own province.
The terrain is extremely mountainous and hilly, stretching from the Lembean - Wulur Mahatus mountain chain in Minahasa to Mount Ambang - Mount Gambuta in Bolaang Mongondow. There are some active active and many extinct volcanoes, some towering 1,800 - 2,000 meters. Rich volcanic ash has blessed North Sulawesi with fertile lands; the highlands and lowlands producing rice, coconut, clove, nutmeg, vanilla and vegetables. The plains produce rice and corn in Dumoga, Ayong and Sangkub (Bolaang Mongondow). Plateaus in Tondano (Minahasa) also produce rice and corn, while Modoinding is known for its vegetables. Sangihe Talaud is recognized for its high quality nutmeg and Rumbia Trees (The Sago Palm is the source of a special flour for traditional cookies/snacks).
Sulawesi is surrounded by deep waters, the Sulawesi Sea in North Sulawesi is approx. 6,200 m deep.

Spring forward...Fall back.... It's ingrained in our consciousness almost as much as the A-B-Cs or our spelling reminder of "i before e...." And it's a regular event, though perhaps a bit less regular than the swallows coming back to Capistrano. Yet in those four words is a whole collection of trivia, facts and common sense about Daylight Saving Time. Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of April ( see chart below ). Time reverts to standard time at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday of October. Daylight Saving Time for the U.S. and its territories is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Eastern Time Zone portion of the State of Indiana, and by most of Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona). California has not yet received federal "approval" to move to a "year-round" Daylight Saving Time in 2001-2002. ( See below.

    http://www.2001everest.com/ev/lesson_plans/lesson_2.htm
Geographic grids are intersecting lines drawn on maps and globes. They are used to help locate and describe specific areas. Two sets of lines encircle the globe: lines of latitude and lines of longitude. The parallel lines of latitude are horizontal, running from east to west. The equator is the imaginary line from which latitude is measured; it is equidistant from the poles, dividing the globe into the northern and southern hemispheres. Unlike lines of latitude, which become progressively shorter as they near the poles, all of the lines of longitude are the same length. Longitudinal lines run from north to south, each individual vertical line intersecting both poles. The prime meridian is an arbitrarily selected line from which all of the others are measured. Any location on the globe can be described in terms its angular distance from the reference points of the equator (0° latitude) and the prime meridian (0° longitude). Lesson 2 // Overview of Geography

The Linux System Administrator's Guide: Version 0.7 Prev Chapter 13. Keeping Time Next
    13.1. Time zones
Time measurement is based on mostly regular natural phenomena, such as alternating light and dark periods caused by the rotation of the planet. The total time taken by two successive periods is constant, but the lengths of the light and dark period vary. One simple constant is noon. Noon is the time of the day when the Sun is at its highest position. Since the Earth is round, noon happens at different times in different places. This leads to the concept of local time . Humans measure time in many units, most of which are tied to natural phenomena like noon. As long as you stay in the same place, it doesn't matter that local times differ. As soon as you need to communicate with distant places, you'll notice the need for a common time. In modern times, most of the places in the world communicate with most other places in the world, so a global standard for measuring time has been defined. This time is called universal time (UT or UTC, formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time or GMT, since it used to be local time in Greenwich, England). When people with different local times need to communicate, they can express times in universal time, so that there is no confusion about when things should happen.
