Size....34 1/4" x 22 1/2" x 4 1/2" TIME AND TIME ZONES DATE OF THE MONTH The calendar moves with the same precision as the map itself. The two markers seen in association with the words "Right of Dateline" and "Left of Dateline" indicate the prevailing date on the respective sides of the dateline. DAY OF THE WEEK With wall map time clock, you are instantly aware of the prevailing day of the week in any region, at any time. The area to the right of the map's international dateline is part of the passing day of the week. The area to the left of the dateline is part of the new day. The names of the prevailing days of the week appear on either side of the dateline and change automatically as each new day is born. SUN'S POSITION The black dot near the center of the map indicates the point on earth where the sun actually appears directly overhead at noon. This is the "apparent noon" or zenith position of the sun. "Mean Noon"— the average position of the sun over one year—is shown by the red line running vertically from the 12:00 o'clock (noon) gradation line on the time scale. The figure 8 pattern results from the gradual shift of the sun's zenith position over the course of one year and is called the "analemma." It reflects the everchanging difference between "apparent solar time" and "mean solar time." This difference is properly referred to as the "equation of time."

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS?
Saturday, October 27, 2001 By Mary Mogan Edwards
Dispatch Staff Reporter If you are among those who think that changing the clocks twice a year to and from daylight-saving time shows disrespect for the immutable progress of the sun, don't sweat it. Around the globe, time-zone lines are drawn with about the same regularity as election wards in 1890s Chicago. In the continental United States, as we prepare for the semiannual clock adjustment at 2 a.m. Sunday, we do so in four time zones that are tidy, more- or-less vertical stripes. Except for some nonconformists in Indiana and Arizona, everybody goes to daylight- saving time on the same date. So, with a rough idea of U.S. geography and the ability to add and subtract, anyone can figure out what time it is most anywhere.

What is Physical Geography? 1. Fundamental questions of physical geography So, what is Physical/Environmental Geography about? If you think about the world we live in (the material aspect of the world, to be specific), you'll probably agree that it may be roughly divided into (1) things of natural origin, and (2) things of cultural origin, i.e. created by people. Natural things are also called physical (in the broad sense, meaning non-human) or environmental. One way to answer the question above physical geography is about the physical elements of our world: landforms, soils, rivers, air masses, ecosystems, and so on. The problem with this definition is that every major environmental phenomenon is also studied by its own respective branch of science. Indeed, as the table below shows, landforms are the subject of geomorphology, weather is studied by meteorology, oceans and rivers - by hydrology, etc. Physical Elements of the Environment Science Rocks Geology Landforms Geomorphology Soils Pedology Flora, Fauna

    More on Time Zones

The Earth is divided into 24 time zones so that everyone in the world can be on roughly similar schedules (like noon being when the sun is highest in the sky). Time zones were first used in 1883 by railroads in order to standardize their schedules. The contiguous US is divided into four time zones. Most US states (except Hawaii and most of Indiana and Arizona) go on daylight saving time (DST) from April until October to save energy (in DST, clocks are set forward one hour). Note: the Alaska and Hawaii time zones are not pictured on the map above.
  • Label the four contiguous US time zones: Eastern (the eastern US), Central (just west of the eastern time zone), Mountain (between Central and Pacific), and Pacific (the far-western US). The contiguous US time zones are one hour apart; for example, if it is 1:00 in Pacific Time, it is 2:00 in Mountain time, 3:00 in Central time, and 4:00 in Eastern time.
  • If it is 12:00 in Central time, label the time in all the other time zones.

The Earth is divided into 24 time zones so that everyone in the world can be on roughly similar schedules (like noon being roughly when the sun is highest in the sky). The idea to divide the Earth into time zones was proposed by the Canadian railway planner and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming (1827 - 1915) in the late 1870s. Time zones were first used in 1883 by railroads in order to standardize their schedules. World time zones were determined in 1884, at an international conference in Washington, D.C. Each of the 24 world time zones are about 15 degrees wide and differ by one hour. Early Time Keeping Until about 100 years ago, each city set its clocks to local time noon was the time when the Sun was at its highest in the sky, as viewed from that city. Even neighboring cities needed to set their clocks differently to make this happen. For example, when it was 8:00 in New York City, it was 8:12 in Boston (because Boston is about 3 degrees east of New York). Before modern transportation and communication, this difference didn't really matter. A Need for Synchronized Schedules Once railroads were built, this became very awkward. Train schedules needed to be written using common time settings that everybody agreed to, so the U.S. railroad companies adopted the idea of
