HEALTH-TOGO: Women market vendors get involved in fight against AIDS Noel Tadegnon LOME, Feb 13 (IPS) - More and more Togolese women are stepping out from the sidelines in this patriarchal society, to join the fight against social ills like Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). More than ever, Togolese women are concerned about the deleterious effects of HIV/AIDS. Faced with the inexorable spread of the virus in Togo, women working in marketplaces and belonging to various organisations are getting together to mount a public information and awareness campaign to educate their sisters. ''It's not often that we get involved in awareness campaigns,'' says Afoua Blokpo, a grocer. ''But we happen to be strategically placed to quickly get a message across to our children, husbands, and other women.'' ''Their role should be to increase awareness of the risks non-protected sexual relations pose, and to help combat the stigmatisation of people living with HIV/AIDS,'' the Togolese Minister of Health, Charles Kondi Agba, noted.

TRADE-TOGO: Traditional Trading Wisdom Rules the Airwaves Ebow Godwin LOME, Feb 12 (IPS) - For two decades, the unrivalled economic boom that made Togo the hub of commerce in West Africa was led by women who used their traditional trading wisdom to manage and control the flourishing businesses. The ''Nana Benz'', who earned the name from the German Mercedes Benz cars that they were the first to import, owned large shops in the hustle and bustle of Asigame, the Lome central market in Adawlato. Here they traded in textiles, wax prints and all sorts of ladies wear bought under mutually beneficial arrangements with western manufacturers. Their market stretched into other land-locked countries like Upper Volta now Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad. ''We enjoyed unrestricted freedom to trade in every form of textiles and wax prints from Holland, Belgium, France and England in those wonderful days when Togo was the centre of commerce in West Africa,'' recalls Dede Creppy, a Nana Benz.

Water and Culture
by Nathan McFall , Soumdina Haut, Togo It is traditional to offer water in a gourd when a visitor enters someone's home. There is also the traditional washing of the hands before eating. In West Africa the right hand is considered "clean" and used for eating, giving, receiving, and any other activity requiring cleanliness. The left hand is considered "unclean" and is used to wipe "unclean" parts of the body. Before eating, therefore, one must dip one’s right hand into a small bowl of water, thereby "washing" it. Normally, if two people are eating, they both wash in the same bowl with the same water. If there are four people, all four use this bowl. It is often more of a sharing of germs than a true washing. Soap is sometimes, but rarely, used at this occasion. After everyone has dipped their hands in the bowl, it’s bon appetite!

Lome Goes for Legislative Elections At Long Last

    Ebow Godwin (Ghanaian Chronicle)
Lome, Togo AT LONG last after what appears to be an interminable wait, the cat is out of the bag. The much awaited Togo legislative elections will now take place on Sunday, October 27, this year. The already twice postponed elections have become a source of political tug of war between President Eyadema and the main Opposition Groups in Togo. A Presidential Decree, acting upon the advice of the Committee of Seven High Court Judges preparing the grounds for the elections announced last night that the government has finally approved Sunday, October 27 as the "D" day for the elections. A very short government communiqué released on Wednesday evening also announced that all candidates for the elections are expected to pay a deposit of 500, 000 F CFA for the elections. The communiqué said all service personnel and members of the security forces are expected to cast their votes 72 hours before the official voting day. Togolese main opposition groups who brokered a Peace agreement with President Eyadema sponsored by the European Union in July 1999 say they are boycotting the elections because they are a violation of the Lome Peace Framework Agreement which stipulates that opposition parties should be represented on the country's National Independent Electoral Commission on equal basis for all Elections.
