OLYMPIC HISTORY Track Events Field Events Road Events Combined Events TRACK EVENTS Track and field events formed part of the inaugural modern Games of 1896. Track races included 100, 400, 800 and 1,500 metres, and the 110 metres hurdles, the marathon was run on the road from Marathon to Athens and the long jump, high jump, triple jump and pole vault on the field completed the picture. Athletics provided the first Olympic title of the modern era, when James Brendan Connolly leapt 13.71m in two hops and a jump to win the triple jump crown by a metre over Alexandre Tuffere of France. Connolly's place in history was secured by his decision to drop out of Harvard when the dean refused to allow him time off to go to the Games in Athens. His triumph followed a voyage of 16 and a half days on a ship from the US to Naples and a train journey to Athens. In 1900 the track events were run on grass and marked the start of an American domination that has stood the test of time, the greatest challenge to the US coming from the Soviet bloc countries in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. In 1904, George Poage became the first black runner to win an Olympic medal, a bronze in the 400 metres hurdles, but on the same day Joseph Stadler became the first black athlete to win an Olympic medal, with a silver in the standing high jump behind the great Ray Ewry.

Haverford Home Page History One of Haverford's oldest sports, early Ford track teams won or placed high in turn-of-the-century Penn Relays, and Phillip Baker, later known as Lord Noel-Baker, a one-year visitor from England set the college mile record. Baker went on to become Haverford's first track Olympian, competing for Great Britain in the 1920 games. By the end of that decade, the Ford thinclads, under legendary coach A.W. "Pop" Haddleton and led by weight thrower J. Howard Morris '30, were the dominant team in the large Middle Atlantic Conference. His name synonomous with Haverford track, Haddleton found unlikely athletes who he thought had potential and developed hundreds of them into top track men into the 1950's. Haddleton's finest protege may have been Jim Grosholz '49, whose career climaxed at the 1949 NCAA outdoors in an 800 showdown with U.S. Olympian Mal Whitfield of Ohio State at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Haddleton was the prime mover in the construction of Alumni Field House in the late '50's, and the indoor track there, now a state-of-the-art 200-meter oval with textured surface, is named for him. Former UB chancellor, president ran in finals of 5000-meters in 1920 Games in Antwerp
By ANN WHITCHER
Reporter Contributor Eighty years ago this week, a young collegian from Indiana was settling back into campus life after spending the summer as an Olympic athlete and competitor in post-Olympic events overseas. The 19-year-old Purdue undergraduate was Clifford C. Furnas (1900-69), who went on to a distinguished career as scientist, author and chancellor of the University of Buffalo from 1954-62, and from 1962-66, as the first president of the State University of New York at Buffalo, following UB's merger with SUNY. Furnas was among the finalists to run the 5,000-meters in the 1920 Olympics-or the Seventh Olympiad-which took place in Antwerp, Belgium. His Olympic run followed successes at intercollegiate competitions throughout the Midwest, and impressive showings in the Olympic tryouts in Chicago and a final meet at Harvard University. Olympic memorabilia, including a photograph album, scrapbook, track uniform, insignia and ribbons, are on display as part of the Clifford C. Furnas Memorial Collection, established by Furnas's wife, the late Sparkle M. Furnas. The Furnas Collection is housed in the University Archives, 420 Capen Hall. The photo album and scrapbook, in particular, bring to life the spirit and drive of a young runner preparing to take on the world.

"G'day" Ms. Miyuki Katayama A member of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers who teaches track and field events in Laos "Significant is to win." In Japan it seems to become almost an obligation for participants to win in the Olympic Games, the world's greatest sport event. I went to the Sydney Olympics hoping that some attention will be paid to eager and resolute athletes from developing small countries, although most attention is directed only to winners. September 22 - the first preliminary race of the male 100m track From left: Vongphakdy, Sirivanh, Mr. Katayama, and the coach Mr. Vongphakdy from Laos was going through his light warm-up in the sub-track. Just besides him, Mr. Morris Green from USA was enjoying a conversation with his teammates. Mr. Vongphakdy continued silently his warm-up without being intimidated by such famous athlete. "OK. Now, I'm going." After he had high fives with me, he started walking towards the track. The name of each runner was called out, for whom a loud applause was given. The drama of Mr. Vongphakdy was over after 11.47 seconds. The four years after the Atlanta Olympic Games were packed into the 11.47 seconds. After the race, he gave me his racing number, saying, "Miyuki, I will give you this." That would become an important piece of my treasures. The record of 11.47 seconds was the second from the last.

History of the Mt. SAC Relays H
Hilmer Lodge At the conclusion of the 1959 affair, Track and Field News reported, "The first annual Mt. SAC Relays got off to a good start with first class performances in every event and excellent standards of achievement in all areas. The West Coast's only two day affair (which will continue to occupy the same dates as the much older Penn and Drake Relays) outclassed the old established meets by a wide margin in a comparison of winning performances." The Mt. SAC Relays has maintained its quality throughout the years, and over the past 43 years continues to out-perform all other major meets across the nation. As we prepare to celebrate our 44th annual event, it is interesting to look back at the history of this famous meet. Hilmer retired in 1963 and moved with his wife Dorothy to Pala, California to devote full time to his citrus ranch which had previously been just a hobby. From his first Relays in 1959 through his retirement in 1962, the event had grown from 850 high school, community college, college and club athletes competing in 56 different events over a 14 hour period to a two day meet over 19 hours, consisting of 139 events with almost 3000 athletes. In that same span, the new facility (combined with Lodge's involvement in national and Olympic track and field) attracted the U.S. Olympic Team to Mt. SAC for its 1960 and 1964 training and trials site, and in 1968 as one of its two trial venues.

Jesse Owens Track and field athlete and long-standing Olympic record holder. Born in Alabama as the 10th child of sharecroppers, Owens moved with his family to Cleveland in the 1920s as part of the massive migration of blacks from the rural South to the urban North. In junior high school, Owens was befriended by Charles Riley, a white teacher and coach, who saw talent in the small, slight black youth. He developed his sprinting, hurdling, and long-jump skills at Cleveland East Tech High School where he dominated Ohio high school track and field. Owens first came to national attention when he tied the world record of 9.4 seconds in the 100-yard dash and long-jumped 24 feet 91/2 inches at the 1933 National High School Championship meet in Chicago. In college, Owens continued to excel in track and field, winning a record eight individual NCAA championships. His greatest collegiate performance occurred at the 1935 Big Ten Conference Championship where he tied or established world records in the 100-yard dash, long jump, 220-yard dash, and the 220-yard low hurdles. Owens is most famous for his performance during the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. Adolf Hitler had planned to use the games to showcase German prosperity amid the worldwide depression and to demonstrate Aryan physical supremacy by fielding a strong German team. Although Germany did win more medals than any other nation, Owens' brilliant individual performance overshadowed Germany's achievement. He won four gold medals, tying the 100-meter dash record and establishing new Olympic records in the 200-meter dash, long jump, and 4 X 100-meter relay. His records in the relay and the 200-meter dash were not broken until the 1956 games, and the others stood until 1960.

14 soldiers go to Olympic Track and Field Trials
by Harriet Rice ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Army News Service, July 11, 2000) For the first time in the era of the all-volunteer Army, more than a dozen soldiers are headed to the Olympic Track and Field Trials, July 14-23, in Sacramento, Calif. Pre-VOLAR, many college track stars were drafted, and soldiers brought home medals from a variety of Olympic Track and Field events: pole vault, shot put, long jump, 200 meters, 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In 1980, the U.S. boycotted the summer Olympic Games in the former USSR. In 2000, the 14 soldiers headed to California are on a rebuilding mission: to put Army athletes back on the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team. The soldiers are assigned to the Army World Class Athlete Program, which provides soldiers who are nationally ranked in Olympic sports full-time training opportunities. In addition to maintaining their military skills, their Army job is to train and win for the black and gold. Top long jump contender Spc. Dawn Burrell will be up against some stiff competition, with all eyes trained on national favorites Marion Jones and Inga Miller. But Burrell, who joined the Army in 1997 is focused. The 26-year-old Pennsylvania native trains at the University of Houston in Texas with Coach Wen Yong Yang. She met one of her career goals at the 1999 U.S. Track and Field National Championships with a gold medal long jump of 6.96 meters (more than 18 feet) - the sixth best jump in U.S. history. "I love the sport because it's fun. I enjoy jumping and I love to see the results of all my hard work," said Burrell.
