SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE

In December 1998, "The Heber Handspringer" power tumbling gym moved into a larger building and invested in two $7,000 competition-level trampolines.
This change would greatly affect Austin Cummings.
Cummings, 18, is a senior at Wasatch High School and a proficient power tumbler. He has been flipping, twisting and bouncing since he was 8. The Heber City native is ranked in the top 15 in the world and second in the nation in trampoline, one of the newest Olympic sports.
However, for Cummings, being at the top of one sport is not enough. He also looks forward to a future as a freestyle skier.
In 2000, the first year Cummings competed on a trampoline, he qualified for nationals and finished second.

Lacy Schnoor was a ninth-grader at Crescent View Middle School in 1999 when her life took a new turn, thanks to a few twists and turns of her own.
She grew up doing gymnastics, dance and cheerleading, so doing a few flips on a trampoline wasn't a big deal for her when the Salt Lake Organizing Committee's "School to Sport" program came to her school to scout for talent, using simulated Olympic sports.
"I just jumped around on the trampoline nothing too scary," Schnoor said.

President of Technical Committee Trampoline of F.I.G. At the end of September the IOC Board made some decisions on the number of athletes in the different sports / disciplines for the Olympic Games in Athens 2004.
In order to reach a maximum number of 10'500 athletes, it was necessary to strictly control the athlete quotas in all sports, and in fact make quota reductions in several sports. It was very difficult to allow quota increases within this framework.
So of course the FIG and the Trampoline Technical Committee were very pleased when the IOC confirmed that in the interest of strengthening the depth of competition in the Olympic Trampoline events, an increase of a total of 8 athletes has been granted. Furthermore, the IOC informed that the drafted gymnastics qualification

For Release February 16, 2003 Jennifer Parilla of Lake Forest, California and 6-time National Champion, Ryan Weston , Pocatlello, Idaho, in trampoline competition. In tumbling, World Cup bronze medalist, Casey Finley , Lubbock, Texas, is the favorite in a tough men's field, while Lindsey Blundell , Gilmer, Texas is a top contender in women's competition. Leading the Double Mini-Trampoline competition will be the four member men's team, who won the bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships. Ann Sims , says, "I am very pleased with the way the competition is shaping up. Tampa is such a great place to have this event, and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission and Convention and Visitors Bureau have been a big help in getting everything organized." USA Gymnastics' Trampoline & Tumbling program consists of four disciplines: Individual Trampoline, Power Tumbling, Double Mini-Trampoline and Synchronized Trampoline. At present, Individual Trampoline is the only Olympic discipline. When asked about the chances for other disciplines to be added to future Olympic Games, Sims said, "I think there is a good possibility that tumbling and Synchro could be Olympic sports someday. It is a question of getting all the parties to agree, and I don't think it will happen until 2008 or 2012." She adds, "This is an emerging sport and is gaining interest from the fans each time it is presented. Be sure to come out and watch these exciting young athletes." Competition for the Junior and Senior Elites and Level 10 is scheduled for Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1. Levels 5-9 will compete on Sunday, March 2. Tickets are $10 per day and are available at the door.

by Bryan Butakis Archery - Olympic archers use a bow to shoot an arrow at a round target. The target is only 1.2 meters wide. The archers stand 70 meters away from it. The archers score the most points if their arrows hit the middle of the target. They get no points if they miss the target. Badminton - Badminton is a very fast sport that is played inside. The players use rackets to hit a ball with feathers called a shuttlecock over a net. The racket looks like a tennis racket, but it is smaller and lighter. The game is played with one or two players on each side. Players get points if they hit the shuttlecock over the net and it lands on the other side. They also get points if players on the other side hit it and it lands outside the court. Baseball and Softball - Baseball and softball are team games. Only men play baseball at the Olympic games and only women play softball. There are nine players on a team and it is played on a field called a diamond. In a game, the two teams take turns at batting and fielding. The idea of the game is to hit the ball with a bat and run to a base. The players must run around all four bases to score a run. Basketball - Basketball is a very fast-moving team sport. Players bounce the ball or pass it to move up the court. Then they try to throw the ball into their basket to score points. The basket is nine feet above the ground. Some players can jump so high that they just push the ball down into the basket. That is called a "slam dunk". The team that scores the most points wins the game.

In a few years'time, the sporting world might see a new trampoline worldpower emerging in the East.
China has seen "a booming picture" in the development of the sport introduced from abroad only three years ago, predicted Zhang Jian, a leading official with the State General Administrative of Sports, who is in charge of the sport.
"The new sport has made a tremendous headway," Zhang told Xinhua, referring to what he described as "astonishing performance" of young Chinese athletes at this year's junior world championships in July in Denmark . The novice athletes bagged home three golds, four silvers and one bronze, to the surprise of such worldpower as Britain, Russia France and Australia
The unexpected results in Denmark have greatly boosted China's confidence, considering that it had resulted for so short a period of efforts, against that by the world powerhouses who had experience for more than three decades.
The nationwide registration of trampoline athletes has reached 260 since 1998, with 18 provincial and municipal sports institutes taking up the discipline, according to Gao Jian, another ranking official in charge of trampoline.

    Gymnastic History
Gymnastics, like a number of Olympic sports, has it roots in warfare. In ancient times, the Greeks, Mesopotamians and Egyptians used gymnastic-style exercises to prepare their warriors for battle. The ancient Chinese also practiced group gymnastic exercises, a tradition which continues today. Gymnastic, as an activity sport, began in ancient Greece more than 2000 years ago. Men gathered at the centers of activity "gymnasiums" to practice sport and debate about art, literature and philosophy. Plato, Aristotle and Homer advocated strengthening qualities of gymnastic activity and finding symmetry between the mind and body. The evolution of modern gymnastics began in the 19th century with the fusion of disciplines popular in Germany and Scandinavia. In 1830s, gymnastics was introduced to United States and its school systems by some of the famous immigrants. In 1881 the the first international sports federation, International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed, later renamed to Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation. This organization pioneered the international competition. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) was formed in United States in 1883. 1885 The American Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) holds first gymnastic championship. 1894 International Olympic Committee created, in Paris.
