Travelling Back in Time [New Postgraduate Course]
September 2001 No 125 A new University of Leicester course offers students the opportunity to study history from the point of view of the people who lived it. The postgraduate qualifications – Certificate, Diploma and MA in Towns, Cities and Societies - are an exciting development by the Centre for Urban History, one of Europe’s leading research centres, and the East Midlands Oral History Archive, which is based at the Centre. courses will explore how people lived and interacted in their communities, based on modules on 20th century community and cultural history. There is also an option on oral history that uses materials from the East Midlands Oral History Archive. Professor Richard Rodger, Director of the Centre for Urban History observed: "Telephones, faxes, email and text messaging have overtaken traditional written records, but 20th century historians have an invaluable resource in recorded memories of everyday experiences and events. We need to be more alert to this source in our teaching." The course is taught in the evenings at Vaughan College, Leicester, in partnership with the University’s Institute of Lifelong Learning. It is open to candidates with qualifications in areas such as local government, personnel management, housing, financial services, surveying and social work, as well as those with degrees in relevant subject areas.

Travelling back in time
Every time you look at the sky you travel back in time ... in a sense. Let's explain: when you look at a star which is 100 000 light-years away, you see it as it was precisely 100 000 years ago. Its light has needed all that time to get to your eyes. So what does this star look like NOW? There's no way to know, unless you wait 100 000 years (but then it won't be NOW anymore...). The Sun is a closer example. The Sun is about 150 million kilometres away from the Earth, and the speed of light is 300 000 kilometres per second. So the light coming from the Sun needs about 8 minutes to reach the Earth. Result? Every time you look at the Sun, you see it as it was 8 minutes ago. The same rule has to be applied to the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation that ESA's Planck satellite will study. The Cosmic Background originated only 300 000 years after the Big Bang, and the Big Bang happened between 10 000 and 20 000 million years ago. It means that the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation has needed as many thousands of millions of years to reach the Earth, and when we observe it we are seeing the Universe as it was only 300 000 years after the Big Bang.

Afghanistan
Canadian Emmanuel Gignac has been working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for over nine years but nothing prepared him for what he witnessed when he entered Herat in Western Afghanistan on December 7, 2001. "We entered from Turkmenistan by car and it was like travelling back in time...no infrastructure...impossible roads... Once, on a mission to the Badghis province, it took us 7 hours to cover about 100 miles." Emmanuel recalls. This mission was to assess what the situation was for internally displaced people (IDP's). He wanted to know why some 15,000 Pashtun people had left their territories in the Gurmash district and came to Bola Murghab, a very desolate drought ridden region.
"When we entered the IDP camp women ran out to our truck...this is very unusual since women are rarely seen in public in these very traditional areas...but that's how desperate they were." he explained. Apparently the Uzbeck, another ethnic group, had harassed the community so badly that they'd been forced to flee their traditional lands to this uninhabitable area where they had not received food aid for over four months. "They were living in deplorable conditions...having dug holes in the ground for some sort of shelters...everyone was screaming, needing to talk...but finally we sat on carpets they placed on the ground and we talked about their needs".
The region had been suffering from drought, but when the bombs started falling much of the international aid was not able to get through to remote areas. "People were desperate...but at the same time I was impressed with the strength and adaptability of these people...under the most horrendous conditions," explained Emmanuel.

ROOT OF ALL EVIL

I have a time machine and I want to travel backwards about 50 years and make a lot of money by investing in stock, buying property and betting on events that I already know the result of. With the effects of inflation I reckon that a reasonably attainable sum of money in 2002 (say £10000) will be a small fortune in 1952 and allow me to make investments which will make me a multi-millionaire. The problem is - how do I transfer this money, today's currency will not be accepted and other accepted methods of transferring wealth (eg gold, diamonds) are inflation proof and will be worth only a relative sum in 1952. Anyone coming up with a workable answer will get a share of the profits. Peter Evans, Walton on Thames UK

Square Eyed and Sleepy Time bandits Final Fantasy VI In many people's eyes this is the best Final Fantasy game out there. A year after it appeared in Japan it was released in the US as Final Fantasy III, much to the joy of gamers everywhere. If you ran the game through an adapter you only saw half of the ending though - sob. Chrono Trigger Now this really was special. Combining all that made FFVI so good with the ability to see your enemies before you walked into them, and the introduction of Double-Tech and Triple-Tech attacks. Time travelling has never been so much fun. Secret of Mana One of a small number of action-RPGs, Secret of Mana managed to rid itself of all the Final Fantasy-style statistics, while still providing an in-depth experience. The ability to plug in a Multi-tap and have a three-player adventure was unheard of before this. Final Fantasy I right through to VI For many people, the Final Fantasy series started with Final Fantasy VII. From a business perspective Squaresoft definitely made the right choice in developing for the PlayStation. No longer would the series' success be limited to Japan and a cult following was established in the US and Europe. Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX and X have all been massive hits the world over, but some of the best games in the series are the ones that have practically been ignored in the west. The Final Fantasy series started on the NES. Looking at it today, the graphics are extremely basic, but this aspect forced you to imagine the characters in your head, thus the experience was far more personal. The battle system has come on a long way over the years, but the same basic premise has always been there - attack, use magic and items. The formula is so successful that to do anything other than carefully evolve would be disastrous.

However, which end is the "earlier" end? Which end do you come out of to go back in time? The answer is, BOTH! Because both ends always appear to be moving compared to the other end, you would be travelling back in time either way you travel. Also, becaus Why don't we have wormholes now? Wormholes are, in fact, only theoretical right now. They have not been proven to exist. Wormholes, that we can travel through, cannot exist naturally (because they are too unstable) and would have to be artificially created. Even if we knew how to create Think of a whirlpool in a lake, going all the way to the bottom. It sucks up everything near it and pulls it underwater (this is a Black Hole). Now imagine two, right next to each other, and their bottoms suddenly hit each other. For a short time their bo Soon, the centre force that was keeping it open is easily overwhelmed by the weight of the water above, and it collapses into the two original whirlpools.

Title Travelling Back in Time Publication 100 Mile Free Press Date August 1998 column 8 For most of the year the town of Clinton in the South Cariboo is a quiet cowboy village, a delightful blend of western motif, horses and history. On every August long weekend, Clinton undergoes a certain historical metamorphosis. It becomes the sight of an unusual gathering of medieval characters; king and queen, lords and ladies, knights, jesters, peasants, wenches, merchants, bards and entertainers. They come from province-wide, the Western U.S. and Canada to what is the most popular BC event of the Society for Creative Anachronism, the "Clinton War." The society, called SCA, is a world-wide organization dedicated to researching and recreating the Middle Ages in the present. Now local history has always held a great interest for me - and historical sites are important components of backyard exploring. But the middle ages in the heart of the South Cariboo? ... it would be an unusual way to spend my August long-weekend. So I left for Clinton, on a hot Friday evening, game for something completely different. Before I did so, I met with a local shire Herald, who helped me compose an historical identity and personae. I was to become Locard Andrias of Caer Madadh, a Scot of the 13

  • Thoughts about Crossovers in general by Kathryn Andersen What is it that makes one crossover more do-able than another? What kind of structure does a Crossover story require?
    The Device
All crossovers need a (plot) Device, something which brings the two universes together in order for the crossover to happen. It depends on what kind of universe it is as to what Device can be used, but here are some common ones:
The same (or later) time and place
The shows happen to be set at around the same time and place, such as England-in-the-eighties, or at the same place and a similar time (for example, one show set in the seventies, another in the eighties) where one lot of characters has merely grown a little older, or at the same time in a similar place, where one lot of characters has simply travelled overseas, for example.

Exploring the Origins of the Universe
A hundred metres below ground, under the border between France and Switzerland, scientists are travelling back in time to study matter as it was in the first fractions of a second after the beginning of the Universe. They are using the world's largest scientific instrument to help reveal how this primordial matter developed into the building blocks that form the great diversity of the Universe today. These scientists-many from the UK - are explorers, extending our horizons in time as well as space, in an attempt to answer one of the most fundamental of questions:
Where do we come from?
At CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics near Geneva,
the path of the world's largest particle collider beneath the border
between France and Switzerland. The observations of astronomers imply that the Universe is still expanding from an infinitely dense and energetic state, after an initial 'hot big bang' some 15 billion years ago. But how did the matter of the present-day Universe evolve from this state? This is one of the major questions that modern research in particle physics seeks to answer. High energy collisions of subatomic particles can take us back in time to the forms of matter that probably existed in the first fractions of a second after the big bang. In this way studying matter at the smallest of scales (subatomic particles) has become inextricably linked with research at the largest of scales (the cosmos). The particle physicists of today have joined forces with astronomers in exploring the origins of the Universe-and in particular, the origins of matter.

Particles and Forces
Facts about Forces
Particle physicists now believe they candescribe the behaviour of all subatomic particles in terms of the basic quarks and leptons, within a single theoretical framework called the standardmodel . The most important ingredients of this model, besides the quarks and leptons themselves areforces that act between the particles and mould them into the forms of matterobserved. There appear to be four basic forces at work in matter- gravity , theelectromagnetic force, the weak force and the strong force.
The different forces, and how the exchange ofparticles works.
Gravity is the weakest of the four but acts over great distancesbinding stars and galaxies together. The electromagnetic force is strongerand responsible for holding atoms and molecules together. Like gravity, itsrange is infinite. The weak force and strong force are by contrast limited inrange, and operate only within the dimensions typical of anatomic nucleus. The weak force causes certain forms ofradioactivity~Y and underlies the nuclear reactions that fuel the Sun. Last but not least, the strong force - the strongest we know of-binds quarks and antiquarks together within the particles weobserve. The strong force seems to act in such a way that quarksare always locked inside these more complex particles, so that wehave never observed a single free quark, at least in presentexperiments.

The M25 is notorious for its ridiculous levels of congestion and heavy tailbacks. How bizarre then, that a game should involve racing around true to life representations of the hellish highway, as well as the rest of Greater London and Oxford. As with London-based Grand Theft Auto 1969 , this prospect will excite some but for the majority of us, it merely represents yet another racing forum, with some familiar sites thrown in for good measure.
If we can just hit that magical 88mph we'll be travelling back in time, Marty The main event within M25 Racer The other modes within the game are The Sunday Cup and the Time Trial. These allow valuable experience to be gained on each of the circuits, to avoid looking like a Sunday morning driver in the league mode. Completion of the Sunday Cup mode allows the player to race in a police car. At first this is novel, but unfortunately it lacks the top speed to be able to compete against the other sports cars. The action flows in a similar style to the Need for Speed series, with normal road users and police providing adequate obstacles in addition to the six other competitors. The graphics and true to life representations of famous landmarks (Big Ben, London Bridge, The Millennium Dome) are superb and it is obvious most of the developers' time has gone to ensuring the scenery is accurate to the last detail. There are some nice touches provided with the option of taking "alternative" routes (like through a shopping mall) for which some gamers may moan that there are no people to plough down. It is even possible to pass through a favoured service station to repair any damage sustained to the car during a race. The sound track is pleasurably funky and the sound effects, especially of the police radio, also work well.
