Home Improvement Watch "The Garden Guy Show" Saturdays on 3TV at 10:30 a.m. The Bare Bones About Bare Root Bare root fruit and nut trees do very well in this region. Apples, guavas, oranges, blackberries and pecans thrive in the desert and bring diversity to your garden. To produce fruit, deciduous fruits and nuts have minimum low-temperature requirements. When it gets down to 45 degrees or below for 60 minutes, you've got yourself a "chill hour." Different types of trees have different chill-hour requirements. Choose varieties with low minimums, usually 250 chill hours or less. Maricopa County usually has 300 to 400 chill hours per year. To develop strong trees with healthy fruit, I'm going to let you in on a couple of secrets (although these secrets don't apply to citrus). First, the earlier in the season you plant, the better chance your tree has for success. Second, different areas of your yard have different temperatures. Some are cooler, while some are warmer. Cold air is heavy and lingers in low spots. Fruit and nut trees like the coolest part of the yard. Seek the lowest part of the yard, with eastern or northeastern exposure. Better yet, dig out and lower a portion of the yard, near a solid block wall, which is ideal for collecting cold air. This also helps channel water and rain to the trees for irrigation purposes.

Tree Injuries Prevention and Care
It takes proper care and maintenance to keep trees healthy and safe. This is a guide toward that objective. Dave Mooter, Community Forester
Mike Kuhns, Former Extension Forester Previous Category Catalog Order Info It has been said that a tree is not planted until it has been in the ground five years. This is especially true in Nebraska, where trees are sometimes difficult to grow.
Injury Prevention
Proper planting and maintenance are the keys to keeping trees healthy and safe. The best way to care for tree injuries is to prevent them from happening.
Proper Selection and Planting
The first and possibly most important steps in injury prevention are proper selection, placement, and planting of a new tree (see NebGuide G77-347, How To Plant Landscape Trees Figure 1 ). Look at the site carefully and completely. Is the space large enough to accommodate the mature tree's crown and roots? Figure 1. Trees should be planted in shallow, wide holes to allow rapid root growth after planting. Planting trees too deep is a common problem. At the nursery select trees with well-developed crowns and no wounds on the trunk or branches. Trees pruned heavily in the nursery or severely wounded in handling may have serious problems later.

Landscaping For Energy Efficiency - pg 5
BY THE NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY
Planning Your Landscape
Before you start landscaping, you must first develop a plan. The components of your plan could include deciduous trees and plants, coniferous trees and plants, earth berms, walls, fences, sheds, and garages. This section will help you create a landscape plan before you plant around your existing home or before you begin construction on a new house.
Use paper and different-colored pencils to begin designing your landscape. First, sketch a simple, scaled drawing of your yard. Locate its buildings, walks, driveways, and utilities (e.g., sewer, electric, and telephone lines). Note the location of all paved surfaces streets, driveways, patios, or sidewalks near your home. Then identify potential uses for different areas of your yard: vegetable gardens, flower beds, patios, and play areas.

Plant survival on school grounds
All too often, schools choose the wrong plant for the wrong site. It is important to understand your site conditions and the potential impacts of human activities on plants in schoolyards to help you plan for their survival. Trees need all the help they can get in the harsh conditions of most schoolyards. Schools often start by planting trees as a way of building a landscape structure for other grounds greening projects or to create pockets of shade in and around play areas. The following list will help you avoid the problems that commonly contribute to a low rate of tree survival on school grounds. Trees have a low survival rate in schoolyards when they are: To avoid these problems: planted without understanding how the harsh conditions of the typical schoolyard affects the health of trees Assess the site conditions, soil types and the human activities around the proposed planting site to help determine whether the location you have in mind is appropriate.

THE CHALLENGE
Michigan Public Act 264 reads, "leaves, grass clippings, vegetable or other garden debris, shrubbery, or brush or tree trimmings less than 4 feet in length and 2 inches in diameter" will no longer be accepted in Michigan landfills or incinerators. THE SOLUTION
Three options offer you choices for handling yard trimmings in a way that's best for you and your yard.
  • 1. Most cities and villages, and some townships offer special collection programs for fall leaves, spring brush or winter holiday trees. Check with your local government office for more information. 2. Private drop-off sites and pick-up collection services, offered by waste haulers and yard care companies, accept yard trimmings for a fee. 3.Handling at least some yard trimmings in your own yard-by grass recycling, mulching or home composting-can save money and time while benefiting your yard.

P2 in the Home Yard
  • Mowing and Yard Care
  • Use electric mowers and hedge trimmers. Gas mowers emit air pollutants that contribute to smog. Use a handheld hose to water your grass and plants. Using automatic sprinklers can result in overwatering, wasted water and lost dollars. Compost your yard waste. Instead of sending your grass clippings and leaves to the landfill, consider composting them. You'll generate less waste and have your own mulch! Composting Avoid pesticides. These are hazardous chemicals that can have impacts on groundwater. Trees
    • Plant trees around your property to help shade your house and reduce your energy bill during the summer.

YARD WASPS
by Stephanie Bailey, Extension Specialist University of Kentucky Department of Entomology
Several wasp species can be found around the yard. Although wasps feed on insects such as house flies and garden pests, some can also be dangerous to people. Most wasps typically ignore people. For example, social insects that live in colonies will readily sting when they perceive their nest or territory is threatened while solitary insects only sting in self-defense when mishandled. In addition, only female wasps can sting. In any case, it is best to regard any wasp with care before attempting to control it, since stings can be very painful. The best and easiest way to tell wasps apart is to look at the relative size of the wasp, and the pattern on the abdomen. Small wasps include yellow jackets and white grub parasites. Yellow jackets are social insects. Fertilized queens overwinter, then start a colony in the spring and provision the first brood of young. Once the first brood has matured, they will take over the provisioning duties, care for the queen and the following broods throughout the summer. In late summer, reproductive males and females will be produced, which consequently mate and then the females overwinter (colonies always die out at the end of the year). In order to eliminate yellow jacket wasps that are indirect competition with humans, the entire colony or nest must be eliminated. Football-shaped nests may be either in the ground or above ground, and will be paperlike.

  • Redirect your sprinkler away from pavement. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk. Wash your car at a car wash that recycles water or try using waterless car wash Collect and use rainwater for watering your garden. Contact your water provider for construction guidelines and backflow device requirements. If you wash your own car, use a hose nozzle and turn off the water while you soap up your car. Use phosphorous-free soap. It's better for the environment. Winterize outdoor spigots to keep pipes from bursting. Direct downspouts toward shrubs or trees. Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps. Bathe your pets outdoors in an area in need of water.
