    Introduction
Location: Caribbean, islands between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Trinidad.
Tobago and the sister island of Trinidad are the southernmost islands of the Lesser Antilles, located close to the South American continental shelf . Tobago is located thirty kilometres northeast of Trinidad, from which it is separated by a channel 37 kilometres (23 miles) wide. The island is 42 kilometres (26 miles) long and 13 kilometres (8 miles) wide, with a total area of 300 square kilometres (116 square miles). Tobago is cigar-shaped in appearance and has a northeast-southwest alignment.
Geologically, the islands are not part of the Antillean arc. Rather, Trinidad was once part of the South American mainland, and Tobago is part of a sunken mountain chain related to the continent.
Tobago is mountainous and dominated by the Main Ridge, which is 29 kilometres (18 miles) long with elevations up to 640 meters (2100ft). There are deep, fertile valleys running north and south of the Main Ridge. The southwestern tip of the island has a coral platform. Although Tobago is volcanic in origin, there are no active volcanoes. Fore station covers 43% of the island. There are numerous rivers and streams, but flooding and erosion are less severe than in Trinidad because of vegetation coverage.
The coastline is indented with numerous bays, beaches, and narrow coastal plains.

    http://www.cep.unep.org/trini_tbgo/fisheries/geography.htm
The twin island Republic of Trinidad (4,828 sq km) and Tobago (300 sq km) is, as the map above indicates, southernmost in the Caribbean chain, geographically 10°30'N latitude and 61°20' W longitude, and geologically part of South America. Venezuela, the closest neighbour, is only 10km distant at its nearest point. Islands in the chain are separated by what is known as the Galleons Passage which is 33km wide. Trinidad's mountainous range spans the entire north coast with a peak of 940 metres, a flat central plain and hills in the south. In Tobago a central ridge of hills rises to 549 metres, with flatter land in the south. Port of Spain is Trinidad's Capital, with San Fernando in the south, Chaguanas (central) and Arima (east) being major urban areas, while the capital of Tobago is Scarborough. 1.3 million people with ancestral beginnings in Africa, India, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and China reside in Trinidad while Tobago's population approximates 50,000. English is the dominant language spoken with Hindi used in the Indian community. Trinidad and Tobago became independent from Britain in 1962, and a Republic within the Commonwealth in 1976. It has a fully democratic government; elections have been held regularly and peacefully since 1956. The Head of State is the President, elected by parliamentarians (currently President Arthur N R Robinson). Executive power lies with the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. The legislature consists of an elected House of Representatives (36 members) and an appointed Senate (31 members). The Tobago House of Assembly has extensive powers in Tobago. At the last election in November 1995, the United National Congress (UNC) formed the government, supported by the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), under Prime Minister Basdeo Panday.

Tobago's restful beauty and easy-going charms are a perfect foil to the energy-sapping spectacle and exuberance of its sister Trinidad. There may only be 21 miles between the two islands, but there are times when Tobago seems oceans away. There are not many truly "unspoilt" Caribbean islands left, but Tobago's claim to such a tag would not find many dissenters: it has a lush, mountainous interior alive with the magic and mystery of the forest; coral gardens in half-moon bays; winding roads and tiny villages clinging to craggy cliffs above a deep blue sea where pelicans wheel and frigate birds soar; and everywhere, it seems, sunsets to die for. Tobago's charms are no longer a secret; its beaches no longer the preserve of locals and holidaying Trinidadians. In the past few years, tourism-related development has boomed: visitor arrivals run at 40,000 a year, Crown Point Airport has expanded to take wide-bodied aircraft; and the little capital of Scarborough is seeing a marked increase in cruise ship calls. But, thankfully, Tobago is not making the mistake of uncontrolled development, high-rise horrors and beach enclaves hiding behind perimeter fencing. Instead, the island has embraced the middle-upper section of the holiday market with more than a little good taste.
