Geography
The Cayman Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba, from which they are separated at the closest point by about 240 kilometers (see fig. 19). The three islands are an outcropping of the Cayman Ridge, a submarine mountain range that extends west from the Sierra Maestra mountain range in Cuba. Grand Cayman is the largest of the islands with a total area of 195 square kilometers. Cayman Brac, 142 kilometers northeast of Grand Cayman, is only 20 kilometers long by 2 kilometers wide. Little Cayman, eight kilometers west of Cayman Brac, is sixteen kilometers by two kilometers in size. The total land area of the three islands is 260 square kilometers, or approximately that of Austin, Texas. All three islands are low lying and are composed of limestone and consolidated coral. A seventeen-meter hill at the northwest tip of Grand Cayman is its highest point. The highest point on Little Cayman is only twelve meters in elevation. Cayman Brac is distinguished by a forty-three-meter limestone cliff that rises from the sea on its eastern tip. Vegetation is largely scrub with mangrove swamps covering about a third of all the islands' area. Located 920 kilometers southeast of Miami and about 50 kilometers southeast of the Bahamian island of Mayaguana, the Turks and Caicos are a group of 8 major islands and more than 40 small islets and cays (see Glossary). The islands are made up of two groups separated by the thirty-five-kilometer-wide Turks Island Passage: the westernmost Caicos Islands, including six of the major islands, and the easternmost Turks Islands with the remaining two major islands (see fig. 20). The islands have a total land area of 430 square kilometers, about the size of San José, California.

GEOGRAPHY Located 920 kilometers southeast of Miami and about 50 kilometers southeast of the Bahamian island of Mayaguana, the Turks and Caicos are a group of 8 major islands and more than 40 small islets and cays. The islands are made up of two groups separated by the thirty-five-kilometer-wide Turks Island Passage: the westernmost Caicos Islands, including six of the major islands, and the easternmost Turks Islands with the remaining two major islands. The islands have a total land area of 430 square kilometers, about the size of San José, California. Geologically, the islands are a part of the Bahamas archipelago, which rises above a shallow submarine platform. All are low lying, with the highest point barely fifteen meters above sea level. Soils are poor, shallow, and infertile. Low scrub covers most of the islands, although several of the larger Caicos Islands have stands of pine. Mangrove swamps fringe coastal areas. No streams are found on the islands, but a few have brackish ponds. No information in file.

The Turks and Caicos Islands The beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands are situated 575 miles southeast of Miami and 39 miles south east of Mayaguana in the Bahamas. Covering 193 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean, the Turks and Caicos Islands have the third largest coral reef system in the world. The reef system makes the Islands one of the world's premier diving and snorkeling destinations. The Turks and Caicos Islands also enjoy 230 miles of pristine white sandy beaches and are surrounded by the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The geographical location of the Islands makes it an ideal port of call for boat traffic traveling between Florida and the Northern Leeward Islands. The majority of the Islands' residents reside in Grand Turk and Providenciales; however, South Caicos, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, Parrot Cay, Pine Cay and Salt Cay are also inhabited. In addition there are countless uninhabited cays waiting to be enjoyed by those who long for the solitude of a completely deserted beach and many of the Islands and cays also have caves that are fascinating to explore. The Island of Providenciales is the main tourist destination where you will find international style hotel accommodations, restaurants, bars and other forms of entertainment. Each accommodation has its own unique style and surroundings with the majority being located on the beach. Providenciales has an area of 38 square miles. In the year 2000 it was estimated that the Turks and Caicos Islands population was between 20,000 and 25,000 residents. The average temperature ranges between 75 and 85 Degrees. During the height of the summer, the temperature can reach 90 degrees but the constant light breeze of the trade winds helps to cool things off when the temperature rises.

One thing that I have learned about birding small islands, whether its St. Lucia, Hawaii, Provo, or Assateague is that islands tend to limit the number of species you can expect to find. Regardless, Provo, TCI is a beautiful semi-arid subtropical island that I would defiantly return to for the diving alone. Welcome to the Caribbean Home Page Welcome WTTC News Business ... Vegetation Geography and Geographical Features Reportedly, the physical beauty of the region fascinated the first Europeans who traveled to the Caribbean. These Spaniards in Columbus' ships described the Caribbean as green and fertile, cooled by the trade winds, with a climate of `perpetual spring'. The lush vegetation, types of fruits and the flora and fauna were portrayed with great enthusiasm. The Caribbean region, located in the tropics, extends in a broad arc of over 4000 km from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in the south. The region also includes, based on historical factors, Belize which is in Central America bordering Mexico and Guatemala. The countries are widely different in physical and population size as well as landforms and geology.
It is to be noted that Dominica, St. Vincent and most of St. Kitts have no white sand beaches. The volcanic ash that characterizes these islands is extremely fertile. Historically, St. Kitts has produced sugar cane with yields comparable to those of high yield sugar-producing countries, like Australia and Cuba. The verdant green of the valleys in St. Vincent is an indication of the fertility of the soil in that island.
