(turtles and tortoises)
Our Tortoises
Currently, we have a pair of yellow-footed tortoises ( Geochelone denticulata ) Elisabeth (pictured to the right) and Odysseus, two hatchling leopard tortoises ( G. pardalis babcocki ), Petra and Gilda, and an assortment of Box Turtles (Terrepene carolina complex, specifically two (1.1) three-toeds and a (0.1) gulf coast), Harlequin, Mike and Abigail, respectively.
The Tortoise Pen
Measures in at 75 square feet and is essentially an "L" shape. It is constructed from cedar posts and 2X4's and has clear fiberglass panels to let in sunlight for plant growth. The top is open to allow the Tortoises to bask in unfiltered sunlight. There is a variety of greens (kale, mustard, dandelion and collard) as well as alpine and day-neutral strawberries for the shelled-ones to feed on. We learned some important lessons about construction:
  • 1. An "L" shape is remarkably unstable when you try to flip it over. (imagine the sound of splintering wood amid Kim's screaming.) 2. "Measure twice, cut once," is not enough - measure 60 times to avoid digging 40 feet of trench - in the wrong place. 3. Digging trenches

Musk turtles can be caught at local ponds.
This soft-shell turtle is a giant at 20 pounds!
Snapping turtles bite with their beaks and not their teeth.
American red-ear turtles are known for their decorative tummies.
Turtles are great pets. Kids will have fun picking them out at the pet store, or they can catch them at the local pond. Safety Note: Before you allow your child to bring home a turtle he has captured, remember that it is a wild animal, and ideally it should remain in its natural habitat. Also, turtles can carry salmonellosis, a potentially fatal disease caused by the Salmonella bacteria, so it's a good idea to obtain a pet turtle from a reputable source. Turtle Types
    • Musk turtle
    • African red-bellied side-neck turtle (holds neck to the side)
    • Snapping turtle (can weigh as much as100 pounds)
    • American red-ear turtle
    • Soft-shell turtle (the fastest-swimming turtle in America; its neck can reach its back feet).
Warning : Be cautious of the type of turtle that you keep as a pet. Many will bite!

Massachusetts Turtle Rescue, Inc., is incorporated under the State of Massachusetts Department of Corporations (General Laws, Chapter 180), and is recognized by the Federal Government as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. MTR provides rescue and rehabilitation for all species of turtles and tortoises. The rescue is located in Springfield, MA and was founded by Debbie Zajchowski. MTR advocates the humane treatment of these wonderful creatures and devotes all spare time to the rescue and rehabilitation of these animals. Massachusetts Turtle Rescue provides permanent homes to abondoned and abused turtles and tortoises, as well as those that have had the misfortune of the pet trade. Many of the animals arriving at the rescue come in with various injuries; such as, broken or missing limbs, cracked shells, and other traumatic injuries sustained from being hit by a car, or dog attacks. Some are in ill health and are suffering from illnesses such as respiratory infections, parasitic infections and many other life-threatening illnesses. Urgent Care If you are interested in owning a turtle or tortoise, MTR recommends that you either adopt from a rescue organization or purchase a captive bred animal through a reputable breeder. It is also recommended that you read as much as you can about the species interested in owning as these are not easy care animals and each species has individual needs. It is also worth noting that you find a competent reptile veterinarian and have met with this person prior to the purchase or the adoption in case the time comes when you may need one. This veterinarian must have extensive knowledge with these animals because their needs are much different than that of a mammal. Many veterianarians do not possess the skills needed to properly diagnose these animals or to successfully treat them.

Seychelles hosts one of the five largest remaining nesting populations of the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle and the world's largest population of giant land tortoises. This program, lead by eminent turtle and tortoise specialist Dr. Jeanne Mortimer, will be providing some much needed additional information about the activities of these species around Seychelles. Hawksbill Turtles
Hawksbill nesting in Seychelles is most concentrated in the vicinity of the granitic Seychelles where nesting females have been the subjects of a tagging study since 1973. Although hundreds of hawksbills were tagged at the nesting grounds and many of the tagged turtles were subsequently encountered on the nesting beach, no tags were ever returned from turtles tagged on their feeding grounds. Although we know where these animals went, we know almost nothing about the physical and biological characteristics of the foraging grounds. The purpose of our scientific expedition is to visit and describe sites known to be foraging grounds for the post-nesting female hawksbills. Using the GPS coordinates obtained from the satellite tracking study, we expect to be able to pin-point the location of their feeding grounds on the remote reefs of the Mahe plateau and observe and tag the foraging hawksbills.
