43. Christmas Traditions
How the holiday is celebrated in the ukraine. Find out why the Ukrainians honor Christmas in January instead of December.
http://209.82.14.226/culture/traditions/christmas/
CHRISTMAS, WHICH TAKES ITS NAME from Christ's Mass, was first celebrated on various dates from about 200 A.D. but was finally set on December 25 by Bishop Liberus of Rome in 354 A.D. The December date, which almost coincides with the winter solstice, became a popular festival of West Europe during the Middle Ages. But as late as the nineteenth century, Christmas celebration was suppressed in Scotland and New England because of some religious differences. All Christian nations have traditions which have become a part of the Christmas season. For example, England has contributed the decorations of holly and mistletoe, carolling and gift giving. The Christmas tree is a medieval German tradition and the immortal carol "Silent Night" also comes from Germany. The United States first made Santa Claus popular in New York, popularized the Christmas card about 1846 and made the major contribution to commercializing Christmas. When Ukraine under King Volodymyr (St. Vladimir) accepted Christianity from Byzantium in 988 A.D. many pagan traditions were in existence which were adapted by the Church to the new religion. Some of those traditions have survived a thousand years and now form a part of today s Christmas celebrations. SVIATA VECHERA OR "HOLY SUPPER" is the central tradition of the beautiful Christmas Eve celebrations in Ukrainian homes. The dinner table sometimes has a few wisps of hay on the embroidered table cloth as a reminder of the manger in Bethlehem. Many Canadian and American families wear their Ukrainian embroidered shirts on this occasion.

ZBORIV: THORNY ROAD TO FREEDOM
By Serhiy MAKHUN, The Day TITLE PAGE OF COSSACK REGISTER WITH BOHDAN KHMELNYTSKY'S COAT OF ARMS On August 1649, 350 years ago, in the very heat of the Ukrainian Cossack Revolution headed by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Peace of Zboriv was signed between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Ukraine, its hitherto rebellious downtrodden province. In this treaty, Ukraine was presented de facto as an equal party in international negotiations for the first time in three centuries. A whole series of the uprisings by the Ukrainian Cossacks and peasants at the turn of the seventeenth century ended in defeat. The rebellious province obtained its chance to win freedom in the late 1640s. The Ukrainians, who felt like second-class people in their own land, looked forward to their first opportunity to overthrow the yoke of Polish magnates, gentry, and omnipotent functionaries. Any Ukrainian felt himself downtrodden, be it a registered Cossack subordinated to Polish overlords and obeying orders from Warsaw or an unregistered Cossack and was obliged to work, together with serfs for his landlord, also usually a Pole. The Ukrainian nobility was largely Polonized and had adopted Roman or Uniate Catholicism. The Orthodox faith was often an additional reason for arbitrary rule by of the occupiers. The last decade before the 1648 uprising was rather quiet in Ukraine. Incapacitated by the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), Europe lost any interest in its eastern frontiers; the Polish magnates and nobility kept King Wladyslaw IV from any attempts to intervene in the war, for they were satisfied that Poland managed to hold the northern borders in the fight with the Swedish King Gustav Adolph (the latter turned his eyes toward Germany), while Moscow was disgraced in the Smolensk War. Nor was Poland interested in worsening its relations with the powerful Ottoman Empire.

Country of Traditions History
Perhaps when you think of Ukraine, you visualize a quaint European village like the one in this photo. You're right! Hundreds of villages like this dot the Ukrainian countryside. Someone interested in just a few weeks of relaxation might well choose such a place to visit. But SEND International and our many prayer and financial partners are interested in more than a quiet getaway! We want to help the evangelical churches of Ukraine reach the 50 million people who live there. This site offers you a fascinating overview of Ukraine, including social, cultural, historical, geographical and economic facts, you will also find great detail about the ministry God has called SEND missionaries to in this beautiful part of the world. Here we reveal SEND's creative strategy for ministry in Ukraine, and you'll discover ways you can partner with us to make a powerful impact for God in Ukraine and former Soviet countries. Social Landscape Ukraine has almost as many people as France, Italy, or the United Kingdom, but neighboring Russia has three times as many people! During the days of the tsars and the subsequent Soviet era, government policies of land development and "Russification" drastically changed the ethnic make-up of Ukraine. Ukrainians traveled east to "homestead" in Far East Russia, and ethnic Russians were moved into Ukraine in order to weaken Ukrainian nationalist feeling. Today ethnic Ukrainians make up about 73 percent of Ukraine's population.

Straightforward and very thorough, it gave this American reader a helpful introduction to Ukrainian culture. Written by an American, Meredith Dalton, who lived in Kyiv for some time, the book tells expatriates what they need to know for a smooth transition to living and working in Ukraine. Ukraine is a very different country from the U.S., and things that Westerners would see as corruption and inefficiency are normal matters there. Dalton is very frank about how to deal with Ukrainian bureaucracy, how to maintain patience, and how to refrain from comparing everything to life back home. While she emphasizes to the reader that Ukraine may be a difficult and sometimes infuriating country for outsiders, she is always respectful of the Ukrainian culture and way of life. This is one of the few books in the Culture Shock series that are so admirably dedicated to preventing culture shock.

Ukraine's Culture
Awakened After Communism

Ukraine's geographical location between Europe and Asia meant that much of its early culture was a synthesis of Eastern and Western influences. When a developed culture emerged in the medieval, or Kievan, period, the influence of the Byzantine Empire was paramount.
In early modern times, major European currents such as the Renaissance reached Ukraine via Poland. A cultural dichotomy today exists within Ukraine, with western regions reflecting European, especially Polish, influence, while in the eastern regions the impact of Russian culture is evident. Soviet Influences
Primary Chronicle
. The Cossack Chronicles describe the tumultuous history of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Cossacks were freedom-loving people who defended the boundaries of Russia. Their camp was situated on the island of Chortitsa ( Khortytsya) . To this day, the Chortitsa Tree stands as a sentinel of this history, and has become a predominant tourist destination.
