Straightforward and very thorough, it gave this American reader a helpful introduction to Ukrainian culture. Written by an American, Meredith Dalton, who lived in Kyiv for some time, the book tells expatriates what they need to know for a smooth transition to living and working in Ukraine. Ukraine is a very different country from the U.S., and things that Westerners would see as corruption and inefficiency are normal matters there. Dalton is very frank about how to deal with Ukrainian bureaucracy, how to maintain patience, and how to refrain from comparing everything to life back home. While she emphasizes to the reader that Ukraine may be a difficult and sometimes infuriating country for outsiders, she is always respectful of the Ukrainian culture and way of life. This is one of the few books in the Culture Shock series that are so admirably dedicated to preventing culture shock.

LANGUAGE
Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine. That is, it is the official language of Ukrainians who represent the major part of the state population. Approximately 10 to 13 million people in the Diaspora (e.g., those living in Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, the US, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Australia and other countries) speak Ukrainian. The Ukrainian language originates from ancient times. The brothers Cyril and Methodius founded the Slav written language. From the time of Rus in the 10th and 11th centuries, the principle phonetic and grammatical features of the Ukrainian language began to form. With the appearance of the “Eneida”, written by Ivan Kotliarevskyi (1798), the new period of development of the Ukrainian literary language began on a popular basis. In the works of Taras Shevchenko, the most famous Ukrainian poet (1814-1861), the language was consolidated as one that had all means for servicing the most important sphere of social and cultural life and unlimited means for further enrichment and stylistic versatile improvement. The basis of the contemporary Ukrainian language is formed by the Middle Dnieper variety of the Southeast dialect - the most unified and the first among others with respect to the number of native speakers.

Ukrainian Youth Culture Study
By Mike Manna (Assisted by Judy Manna) This is a research paper studying Ukrainian youth culture before actually entering the country. You will find graphs, charts, maps, and photos. This study comes from an American bias, yet many of the resources were directly written by Ukrainians. It is an attempt to understand the culture and to formulate a personal starting point. The research was conducted during the month of September in 2001 for my Cultural Anthropology class. Both my wife and I read over 1000 pages of material including many articles written about studies conducted in the past two years. The Bibliography is a partial listing of these resources. I welcome any comments. Please contact me at manna@youthdiscipler.com The 31 page paper is in Adobe Acrobat Reader (.pdf) format. If you have the reader installed on your computer (most computer's do), just click the link below and wait for the paper to download. The download could take 5 minutes. You may read it online or print the paper. Ukrainian Youth Culture Study (649K) If you do not have the Acrobat Reader program, first click the link on the side of this page to download the reader. Then install it, and come back to this page to read the paper.

ukraine’s location between Asia and Europe meant that much of itsearly culture was a synthesis of Eastern and Western influences.
http://www.northsidecc.org/Missions/Ukraine/culture.htm
Ukraine is bordered on the west by Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary; on the southwest by Romania and Moldova; on the south by the Black Sea and Sea of Azov; on the east and northeast by Russia; and on the north by Belarus. Ukraine is home to mostly native Ukrainians but also includes significant populations of Russians, Jews, Belarusians, Bulgarians, Poles, Hungarians, and Romanians. Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian are commonly spoken in different regions of Ukraine. The highly regimented lifestyle of t he Soviet period is slowly being supplanted by a consumer society. However, the transition to a market-based economy is difficult, and most people have been engaged in a desperate struggle to make ends meet. An average family has only about one-seventh the living space of an average family in the United States. People in Ukraine spend more than half of their income on food, and many families depend on garden plots to meet their food needs. Due to economic constraints, families are small and getting smaller. Divorce rates are high.

THE LIBRARY BUSINESS IN UKRAINE: PRESENT STATE AND DEVELOPMENT TRENDS
Analytical Review.

Reviewers: Professor V. K. Zahumenna, Dean, Head of Chair, Kiev State University of Culture and Arts, head of Bibliography Section of the Ukrainian Library Association CONTENTS INTRODUCTION UKRAINE – NATION, PEOPLE, LIBRARIES STATE POLICY AND LEGISLATION IN THE SPHERE OF LIBRARY BUSINESS THE SYSTEM OF MANAGING THE LIBRARY BUSINESS ... LIST OF LITERATURE INTRODUCTION The world of libraries of Ukraine is rich and diversified. The library business has a long and dramatic history closely related to the country’s history. This publication does not pretend to be a research of history or an exhaustive reflection and all-rounded analysis of contemporary state of the library craft in Ukraine. The author’s task is to provide foreign colleagues with a general idea of the system of libraries and library craft in Ukraine and also, based on publications of recent years and the author’s own observations, to highlight major aspects of libraries’ development at the modern stage in order to present a foundation for comparative analysis of library business in Ukraine and foreign countries. This will help in developing common strategies for solving problems of library-and-information sphere important for the international community, and in organizing international cooperation. The experience of publications of this kind – e.g. on library business in Germany, Denmark, Great Britain1 has shown that this approach is fruitful.

Ukraine is growing as a popular destination for tourists and Travellers Volunteers alike, and Kiev is rapidly becoming the city to see in Eastern Europe. It's even beginning to compete with Moscow in that respect. Since its independence, Ukraine, and Kiev in particular, has opened up and become an extremely friendly, hospitable country. The people are very sociable and charming, and in fact, socialising plays a big part in Ukrainian life! Current WEATHER in Kiev
Ukrainians are famous for their humour, melodiousness and their artistic handicraft talents such as weaving, painting, wood-carving and ceramics. But mostly Ukrainians have a sensitivity for working with the land, which they love with a passion. Ukraine is mostly a level, treeless plain calls " steppe ". There are the Crimean Mountains in the Crimean peninsula and the Carpathians in the west, but they are not very high. Mixed forests of pine and fir-trees, beeches, limes, oaks and elms cover the mountains, but the thickest woods can still be found in the northern part of the republic, in Volyn. ABOUT UKRAINE Ukrainian culture goes back thousands of years and numerous historical landmarks of bygone civilizations have been preserved. Stylized ceramic female figurines and pottery decorated with meandering designs in ocher, black and white date back from the Trypillian culture (4th - 2nd millenia B.C.) and there are
