... Contacts Our partners: Donetsk Union of Artists of Ukraine Asking Minister of Culture to Defend Unique Mosaic of Alla Horska The Donetsk organization of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, Donetsk oblast department of the Union of Ukrainian Women addressed with a letter to Ukraine's Minister of Culture and Arts Yuri Bohutsky. They demand to "defend national interests", to help to preserve the unique monument of the Ukrainian monumental art - mosaic "Women-Bird" by Alla Horska, which is planned for destruction in Donetsk. "What will we tell our ancestors 5-10 years after, if today we do not consider carefully this event? We believe in our powers, in that it is really Ukrainian, and will protect our national interests", goes the letter. While commenting on the situation relating the mosaic, director of the oblast organization of the Ukrainian Women Union Lyudmyla Ohneva reported that the wall, on which the mosaic is situated, after the privatization of "Rubin" Donetsk shop, is now belonging to a premise, in which a "McDonalds" restaurant will be situated. She said that the employees of the shop and inhabitants of the house confirmed that the new owners of the premise have already announced their intention to destroy the mosaic. UNIAN reference. Alla Horska is a world-known artist-mosaic maker. She, together with Vasyl Symonenko and Les Tanyuk, participated in the first investigations of the burials of the victims of Stalin repression in Ukraine. For her law-enforcement activities, A.Horska was twice excluded from the Union of Artists of Ukraine, and was renewed in it only after her death. A.Horska was killed by unknown person on November 28, 1970.

CULTURE
Literature Ancient Ukrainian literature was sprung from sermons, legends, chronicles, and warrior epos in the days of the Kyiv State. The original preaching literature is presented by impressive political treatise of Ilarion, the priest of the church at the court of Great Prince Yaroslav the Wise at Berestov (who later became the first Metropolitan of Kyiv and all-Ukraine Rus). This work, “The Speech on Law and Blessing” was proclaimed in the 11th century in the Desiatynna Church in honor and for the glory of Prince Volodymyr the Great who joined Kyiv Rus with the Christian world. “The Song of Igor’s Campaign”, written by an unknown author, is considered the most famous poetic work of the 12th century. This work is based on the historical story about the campaign of Igor, Prince of Novgorod-Siversky, his brother Vsevolod, son Volodymyr and nephew Sviatoslav against the polovtsians, his defeat and flight from captivity. From the Middle Ages, the wonderful samples of folk-poetic works has appeared, which were in the form of historical ballads, songs, lyrics, genre poetry, and folk poetry. They reflect life and the manner of people, as well as historical events and activities of people. At present, the literature of the 16-17th centuries is especially attractive. It includes the works of the period of the national-liberation struggle and the struggle for renewal of Ukrainian statehood.

EDUCATION
The public education of Ukraine is centuries old. Its organizational date forms from Kyivan Rus. The development of the written language and school education among the Eastern Slavs was promoted by the creation of the Slavonic alphabet by SS Cyril and Methodius in the 11th century. Schools in Kyiv Rus had begun at the end of the 10th century in Kyiv, with numbers increasing from the 11th to 12th century. Schools were established at churches, monasteries and princes’ courts. The first private parish schools were known from the 10th century. The first institution of higher learning was the Kyiv-Mohyla Collegium (later called Academy), which was established in 1632. The Lviv University is one of the oldest universities in Europe, having begun activities in 1661. Independent Ukraine has inherited the developed network of educational establishments. The present system of education includes preschool education, general secondary education, out-of school education, professional and technical and higher learning education. In all, there are about 48,000 establishments and institutions, at which about 15 million students are educated. In the system, there are more than 2 million teaching specialists, which means that every third citizen is either teaching or studying. According to the Constitution of Ukraine, the state is obligated to ensure accessible and free of charge preschool, secondary, professional, technical and higher education at the state and municipal educational institutions, and the development of various forms of education. Moreover, the guarantees of the right for education are a compulsory general secondary education, granting state allowances and privileges to pupils and students, as well as the right for citizens to be educated at the state and municipal higher learning institutions on a competitive basis and free of charge.

History. The very symbol of the ukraine is representative of Ukrainian culture. The trident is originally the coat of arms for the Tiuryk dynasty.
http://www.plhs.esu3.org/hs/student/apfall00/ukraine/culture.htm
Culture The Ukriane is a country deeply rooted in its culture, more so than most people in America. American culture is really a combination of cultures from many different counties whose immigrants moved here long ago. The Ukraine on the other hand, still has its traditional culture from hundreds of years ago. Food The Ukrainian traditional foods are very unique when compared to western culture. It is however, comparable to Russian cuisine. The most famous and most popular of Ukrainian dishes is Borsch. Borsch is popular is many slavic countries, but it origins can be traced to the Ukriane. Borsch is a semi-sweet tasting vegtable soup with beets serving as its primary ingredient. The Ukraine is also famous for its great breads. The country is situated in what is known as the "breadbasket" region. In many European countries, Ukrainian bread is so admired that it is considered a delecacy and served is upperclass resturuants. Holidays Perhaps the best way to opserve Ukrainian Culture is to examine how they celebrate the Holiday Season. Interestingly Christmas is celebrated on January 7th rather than December 25th. Apparently thousands of years ago the entire world celebrated Christmas on January 7th due to a difference in calanders. Becuase the Ukrainian people value tradition so much in their lives, many Ukriainians still celebrate the holiday on its old date. During the evening meal on Christmas eve, often wisps of straw are strewn accross the table. This is to remind the people of Jesus's simple beginnings in a manger. There are many other traditions, but these are usually family traditions and not specifically Ukrianian in nature.

About Ukraine Ukraine (pronounced in Ukrainian UKRAYINA) is a country in south-eastern Europe, the second largest of the continent after Russia, and one of the most populous in Europe. Its history spans more than a thousand years. For several centuries it had stayed under Russia's domination and regained independence in 1991. Physical geography
Population

Ethnic Ukrainians make up more than seven-tenths of the total population of about fifty million people. The Ukrainian language is related to Russian and Belarussian and belongs to the Slavic group of languages. Russians are the largest minority group, accounting for about two-tenths of the population. Other ethnic minorities of varying sizes are Belarussian, Moldavians, Poles, Bulgarians, Jews, Greeks, Tartars, and others. The highest population densities are found in the industrialized Donets Basin and Dnipro Bend regions and in the agriculturally productive forest-steppe belt. Some historical facts Among the Slavs' earliest settlements was that of the name of Kyiv along the Dnipro River. The state known as Kyivan Rus-Ukraine arose in late 9th century. The Kyivan Rus-Ukraine reached its zenith in the 10th and 11th centuries under the rulers Volodymyr I (St. Vladimir) and his son Yaroslav I (Yaroslav the Wise). Volodymyr I adopted Christianity as the official religion of his realm about AD 888.
