Introduction To Urban Forestry A compendium of information and inspiration assembled with love for present and future stewards of our urban forests. A breeze rustles through the leaves of newly planted saplings in a small grove surrounded by broken pavement and concrete buildings once littered with graffiti. In years to come, the trees will be a source of shade and beauty where children can play and families can gather beneath the green canopy deep within the inner city. The city landscape, once bustling with the activities of progress, commerce and convenient living, has taken a new course. A definite greening in the concrete jungle is taking hold. Tree planting projects, led by volunteers and dedicated professionals, are successfully bringing nature to the city and reuniting urban dwellers with the natural world around them. The urban forest is helping to cool and clean the air, providing shade and beauty for residents, improving property values and providing shelter for an array of wildlife. Unlike the wildland forest that stretches uninterrupted by human activity for miles on end, the urban forest thrives around crowded highways, business complexes and convenience stores from a single tree planted in the corner of a parking lot to the thick woods of a city park. The emerging trend toward the growth and care of urban forests is opening new doors of opportunity to fulfilling careers for city dwellers who love nature and want to play a role in preserving the delicate environment.

    Introduction and History
One of New Hampshire’s most unique resources is not found on a majestic mountain top... or in the state’s many lakes, rivers, and streams... or even within its wooded forests. It’s actually located on a quiet road on the outskirts of Portsmouth, just waiting to be discovered by anyone who values New Hampshire’s woodlands and natural resources. The Urban Forestry Center was established in 1976, and was given to the people of New Hampshire through a generous bequest by John Elwyn Stone, a direct descendant of John Langdon , the first governor of the state. Mr. Stone’s gift consists of 170 acres of field, forest, and saltmarsh, several buildings, and the annual interest income from a trust fund. The property is managed by the Division of Forests and Lands of the Department of Resources and Economic Development. The Center is used as a Tree Farm to demonstrate proper forest management, a bird and wildlife sanctuary, a garden and landscape demonstration site, and as a learning center offering information and programming in community forestry planning, forest management, ecology, tree and plant identification, and wildlife stewardship.

    Urban Forestry
Quercus palustris , pin oak, Boston Common
The urban forest plays an important role in Boston's landscape. The urban forest consists of all the treed areas in Boston including street and yard trees, woodland areas, and parks. Trees contribute to the well-being of our communities environmentally, socially and economically. For example, urban forests can moderate local climate, filter air pollutants, store storm water and reduce run-off, increase biodiversity and provide wildlife habitat. Trees accent our buildings, define our public and private spaces, and improve our psychological well-being.
    Street Trees
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department plants public shade trees throughout Boston's 22 neighborhoods. Each street tree signifies the Mayor’s commitment to a greener Boston. The department plants in the fall and in the spring. Weather rarely makes an 'exact' date, but we use the following planting dates as a general guide: fall (October to December) and spring (March to May). Planting locations are chosen based on resident requests as well as special projects, such as parks, and residential and commercial projects. All street trees are maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department. Our maintenance program includes pruning, disease control, removals, and storm damage repairs.

Urban forests reduce energy consumption, improve air and water quality as well as provide many other benefits.

The purpose of the Urban and Community Forestry Program is to create sustainable urban forests to help improve the quality of urban environments and the quality of life. Program staff work to:
  • Arrest the decline of urban forests through proper management and planting of trees in communities.
  • Improve and encourage employment opportunities associated with urban forestry activities.
  • Maximize the potential use of tree and vegetation cover to reduce energy consumption, improve air and water quality, and produce an assortment of products.
  • Encourage coordination of federal, state, and local efforts to promote citizen participation in the development and implementation of urban forestry activities. The structure and delivery of the program is built upon cooperative relationships between agencies, and contractual agreements with nonprofit organizations. Participating groups include the Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute (UFEI) which was developed by the Natural Resources Management department faculty within Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to address the increasing need for improved management of urban forests in California, the California ReLeaf organization, an association of non-profit tree planting groups, and the California Urban Forest Council which focuses on technical and institutional issues of urban forest management.

Urban Forestry Commission When walking around your city, note that wherever you see trees you are seeing part of the urban forest. The trees of the urban forest dwell in parks, along streets, in yards, on empty lots and in protected areas such as stream banks. Without trees, there would be no urban forest, and without an urban forest, much of the wildlife that inhabits it would be at risk. Birds, animals, insects, and fish receive sustenance from trees. People have an important role in maintaining and promoting the urban forest; they plant and care for its trees and receive its many benefits in return. The Urban Forestry program exists to help residents select the appropriate trees, provide education about tree health and maintenance, and protect, preserve, and restore the urban forest canopy. The University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture has additional resources and information about the benefits of urban forestry.
