The Spanish discovered the territory of present-day Uruguay in , but the Indians' fierce resistance to conquest, combined with the absence of gold and silver, limited settlement in the region during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Transition to Democracy, 1984-85 The territory now occupied by the Republic of Uruguay was discovered in 1516 by Juan Diaz de Solis, leader of a Spanish expedition which, looking for a route to the Indies via the New Continent, sailed up the Rio de la Plata. Noticing the presence of nat ives in the shore, he landed at the head of his men and was immediately killed. Then, and throughout the whole period of the conquest, the natives put up such a brave resistance that even today the Uruguayans are proud to call themselves "charruas" in me mory of the indomitable spirit and the total refusal to surrender to the foreign invaders manifested by the tribe which inhabited the southern part of the country. The territory took a long time to conquer, not only because of the strong resistance of the natives, but also by reason of a lack of interest on the part of the Europeans who did not discover there the precious metals they had found in Peru. In 1617 Hernando Arias de Saavedra (Hernandarias), Governor of the Rio de la Plata, realized that the region´s real assets lay in its extensive prairies and its inexhaustible reserves of water, together with its relative flatness and splendid climate, all offering gr eat possibilities for livestock farming. It was the Governor himself who introduced the first bovines; they bred remarkably rapidly, soon spreading all over the country and establishing the bases for its future economy. Later, England and Portugal came to envy Spain this prosperous colony.

That same year, the Charrúa killed Solis’s party on the riverbanks. Subsequent attempts to colonize the territory during the 16th century were discouraged by the Charrúa. The first permanent settlement was made in 1624 by the Spanish on the Río Negro at Soriano. Before the arrival of Europeans, the territory which is now Uruguay supported a small population estimated at no more than 5,000 to 10,000. The principal groups were the Charrúa and Chaná Indians. These seminomadic tribes did not develop the tools necessary to farm Uruguay's grasslands. They moved to the shore in summer to fish and gather clams, fruits, and roots, and inland in the winter to hunt deer, rheas, and smaller game with bolas and bows and arrows. Bands of eight to 12 families under a chief lived in villages of five to six houses made of matted windscreens. The fierce Charrúa attacked enemies to expand hunting grounds and capture women and children. Between 1680 and 1683, contesting Spanish ownership of the region, Portuguese colonists in Brazil established several settlements, such as the Novo Colonia del Sacramento, along the Río de la Plata opposite Buenos Aires. However, the Spanish made no attempt to dislodge the Portuguese until 1723, when the latter began fortifying the heights around the Bay of Montevideo. A Spanish expedition from Buenos Aires forced the Portuguese to abandon the site, and there the Spanish founded the city of Montevideo in 1726. With the surfboard is Luisma Iturria. Uruguay is a country with chilly winters. Even during the summer the water is usually under 17ºC. In 1985, Pancho Gomez and Diego Rigabert decided that it was time to go surfing without freezing. They started renting a house in Montevideo which was simultaneously the factory and Diego's home. The first wetsuits were born there. It wasn't easy. They were hand cutted and then sewn with an "Elgin" home sewing machine and an overlock machine that it wasn't even for sewing neoprene. But the quality of the materials used (all Japanese made) and the effort to produce a quality wetsuit became what FLESH is today. Later in 1987, they decided to move to Punta del Este, the major summer resort in Uruguay and considered as the most exclusive of South America. They rented a new factory building with much more working space than before. This was the first step to an industrial production of wetsuits. At the same time, they also opened the store at Punta del Este, which is now a classic for surfers. The FLESH brand was beginning to be recognized by South American surfers and considered as excellent quality and design.

The original Uruguayan flag was a white field with nine horizontal azure blue stripes, El sol de Mayo (The Sun Of May) in a white canton. The present flag was adopted on July 11, 1830. On that date, the number of stripes was reduced by law to five white and four blue - one for each of the nine political divisions originally forming the republic. Today, there are nineteen states. These states are called departamentos El Sol De Mayo has sixteen rays, alternating from straight to wavy (this symbolizes Uruguay's independence), while the white and blue stripes indicate her former association with Argentina.
