Guam authorities welcome US warplanes Authorities in the American Pacific territory of Guam say they are very pleased about the possible deployment of more US bombers to the island.
US military officials have confirmed 12 B52 and an equal number of B1 aircraft are being prepared to move to Guam as a warning to North Korea.
Government spokesman John De La Rosa says the move will also provide a boost to the territory's struggling tourist industry.
"This sends a message to those Asian countries, particularly Japan and Korea, that the United States values Guam, and we've added extra security," Mr De La Rosa said.
"Even though Guam is safe regardless of the additional security, but the visible bombers on Guam will add to the argument on our part," he said.

A Brief History of the U.S. Pacific Fleet
Throughout our country's proud history, the United States Navy has been a dutiful servant of the nation and its people, and a champion of American goals abroad. The Pacific Fleet has played an integral role in furthering those goals by providing a stabilizing influence in a vast ocean area during periods of tension and conflict.
The Pacific Fleet's contribution to our Navy's proud heritage dates back to 1821 with the establishment of the Pacific Squadron, the first permanent U.S. Naval presence in the region. This small force confined its activities initially to the waters off South America, then expanded its scope to include the Western Pacific in 1835, when the East India Squadron joined the force. The extent of its responsibility was further enlarged in the 1850's when California and Oregon were annexed.
The importance of U.S. Pacific Naval forces as an instrument of foreign policy blossomed in July 1853, when Commodore Matthew C. Perry delivered a letter from President Fillmore, seeking diplomatic and trade relations between the United States and Japan. Eight months later, in March 1854, Commodore Perry negotiated and signed a treaty between the two countries, opening Japan to trade with other nations for the first time in 300 years.
The Spanish-American War of 1898 resulted in further expansion of American naval power in the Pacific. Commodore George Dewey led America's Asiatic Squadron into Manila Bay for the first engagement of the war on May 1, 1898. The battle was over in seven hours and eight Spanish warships were destroyed. Two months later, off the coast of Cavite, Philippines, Commodore Dewey issued the famous order, "You may fire when ready, Gridley!", and dealt the final blow to the remaining Spanish fleet. This decisive victory left the United States in possession of former Spanish held territory in the Philippine and Mariana Islands. More importantly, however, it established the United States as a major maritime power.

TAHITI PLANS US$1 MILLION PEARL PROMOTION PAPEETE, Tahiti (Oceania Flash, Feb. 13) - French Polynesia's government has earmarked CFP150 million (about US$1 million) for the promotion of the Pacific territory's black pearl industry. Speaking on Thursday during tenth anniversary celebrations of the Tahiti Pearls promotion agency, GIE Perles de Tahiti, its Chairman Pierre Teriitehau stressed the industry ranked second, just behind tourism, as French Polynesia's main export revenue earner. Teriitehau said the appropriation would enable Tahiti pearls to be promoted more aggressively on overseas markets. To mark the tenth anniversary of the organization, GIE Perles de Tahiti has this week invited all of its representatives world-wide to attend a seminar in the capital Pape'ete. One of the objectives of the meeting is to devise future development strategies to secure new markets. Main buyers of Tahiti's black pearls currently originate from Japan, the United States, Canada, and Europe. Last month, the People's Republic of China granted French Polynesia Most Favored Nation status and agreed to lower import taxes for black pearls from 22 percent to 10 percent.

York, William Clark's slave, comes west with Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery.
Slavery is declared illegal in the Oregon Country. The infamous "Lash Law," requiring that blacks in Oregon be they free or slave be whipped twice a year "until he or she shall quit the territory," is passed in June. It is soon deemed too harsh and its provisions for punishment are reduced to forced labor in December.

Federally-appointed Governor Joseph Lane arrives to proclaim that Oregon is now a Territory of the United States.
The Oregon Donation Land Act becomes law, granting free land to "whites and half-breed Indians" in the Oregon Territory. Note that the language of the act prevents blacks from claiming land in Oregon.
Jacob Vanderpool, a saloonkeeper living in Salem, becomes the only person known to have been kicked out of the Oregon Territory because of his skin color.
