Social Studies - US History 2 (G/A/H) Social Studies PHILOSOPHY AND DESCRIPTION OF THE SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT
The Belleville Public Schools' Social Studies program provides various social studies courses, which are designed to enable the student to recognize and appreciate the United States and the World as multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multi-lingual societies. The knowledge and skills needed to prepare young people to identify, understand, and work to solve the problems that face our increasingly diverse nation and interdependent world are developed as well. To function effectively in society, the individual needs knowledge of human social situations beyond his/her own experiences. The acquisition of such skills is necessary to deal with life's challenges.
As a participant in a democratic society, each citizen must know how to cope with social problems and act with responsibility to accept and respect the rights of others. To act as a member of a group or as an individual, a citizen must have positive social attitudes and be willing to use them. The Social Studies Program is designed to help young people achieve these goals.
    GOALS
    1. To provide the student with a basic history of the United States and the World.

AMERICAN STUDIES IN THE UNITED STATES:
    AN OVERVIEW
    By John F. Stephens
An Introduction During its 60 years of formal development in the United States, American studies has established itself as a distinct interdisciplinary field that promotes a broad humanistic understanding of American culture past and present, encourages scholars from diverse disciplines to exchange ideas on America, and examines the ways American life relates to world society. American studies is simultaneously multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in character, serving as an arena in which scholars from a variety of disciplines share their particular areas of expertise, and as a staging ground for innovative topical pursuits. American studies includes the experiences, values, perspectives, concerns and contributions of the diverse groups that make up the United States, as well as their encounters and conflicts. It seeks to understand how diversity has been constructed in a nation of conquered peoples and immigrants, who come not only from Europe, but also Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, the Near East and Latin America. But American studies recognizes that Americans also participate in a larger cultural heritage, a shared system of beliefs, behavior, symbols and material objects drawn from multiple sources throughout the world and shaped by democratic ideals and practices, through which Americans give meaning to their lives. It explores differences and commonalities, while preparing students for citizenship in a diverse, democratic state.

The Abolitionist Legacy : From Reconstruction to the NAACP
James M. McPherson (Princeton Univ. Press, 1995); Paperback.
This history by the author or the Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the Civil War, Battle Cry of Freedom, traces the continued activism of the abolitionist generation from Reconstruction through their battles against post-Reconstruction segregation to the creation of one of the leading organizations of the modern civil rights movement. McPherson includes a good discussion of the uneasy alliances forged with the woman's suffrage and anti-imperialist movements, and finds that it was no coincidence that abolitionist Moorfield Storey was simultaneously president of the Anti-Imperialist League and the NAACP.
African Americans on the Western Frontier
Monroe Lee Billington and Roger D. Hardaway, eds. (Univ. Press of Colorado, 1998); Hardcover.
Pathbreaking anthology of essays about the diverse range of occupations and experiences of African Americans in the West. Although some aspects of their experience have received increased attention in the last few years, most notably "Buffalo Soldiers" and African American cowboys, this volume offers an unusually comprehensive view by bringing together essays on everything from slavery and the civil rights struggle to the development of African American newspapers.
