Black and White Sat Down Together: The Reminiscences of an NAACP Founder
Mary White Ovington, ed. Ralph E. Luker (Feminist Press, 1996); Paperback.
From 1915 through the 1920s, the NAACP was fundamentally involved with efforts to end the U.S. occupations of Haiti and Santo Domingo. Ovington served on the advisory committee of the Haiti-Santo Domingo Independence Society and worked closely with Moorfield Storey, Oswald Garrison Villard, W. E. B. DuBois, and James Weldon Johnson. Ovington's accounts of her efforts to establish NAACP chapters in the South, Midwest and California illuminate some of the difficulties the founders of the NAACP faced as they worked to develop a strong multiracial organization. These memoirs were published serially in the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper in 1932-1933 and are now available in book form for the first time.

Specific lines of research include the history and sociology of the public sphere; the history of violence, peace and social movements; the social study of migration and of transnationalism; macroeconomic issues in Mexican development and North American integration; comparisons between Mexico-US integration and Caribbean-US integration; and democratic consolidation. Major international conferences addressing these themes have been coordinated in recent years, including:

United States History
Introduction
The study of United States History builds on the eighth grade study of the History of North Carolina as an American State. From the eighth grade study of North Carolina History, students bring broad understandings of the founding and early national periods of our history. By having concentrated on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in their eighth grade study, students of this course can logically place their emphasis on the twentieth century. From earlier studies of the Constitution and the American frame of government, students bring broad understandings on which this study can build. Consequently, it is appropriate that this study emphasize the economic, social, and political developments of the twentieth century. By the time students arrive at this study of United States History, they will have had significant exposure to world studies. Whether their perspectives are cultural, geographic, or historical, they bring these to their study of our own nation's history. They discern that the political institutions of the United States had their origins in Europe and that European political ideas in colonial and revolutionary British North America were adapted and expressed in the founding documents of the United States. As they study United States History, students realize that essentially European ideas of government and society have become American as our society has become much more diverse and complex.

Extension du domaine de la lutte (1999) deals with a social class the world of middle computer management infrequently seen in recent French cinema. The article interrogates this representation along with problems of masochism and male sexual self-disgust raised by the film and the Michel Houellebecq source-novel. The film's two central characters purportedly, and vainly, seek pleasure in heterosexual fulfilment when it may be masochistic jouissance that is the real object of their desire. COURSE DIRECTOR – COLIN SAMSON Office 5A 310 Office Hours: Mondays 3-5, Thursdays 2-3. TEACHING ASSISTANT S
Aims of the Course
This course aims to introduce students to some of the most influential ideas that have informed sociological theories and visions of American society. These ideas will be related to the debates around race, inequality and gender. We will cover one key figure and his or her contribution each week. By the end of the term, the student will have a broad appreciation of the variety of understandings of American society and the relevance of sociological thinking to them. Along the way we will discuss some of the key themes that sociologists inside and outside the US have concerned themselves with, beginning with Tocqueville’s notion of America as the original democratic society and ending with Baudrillard’s conception of the links between democracy, illusion and hyper-reality in contemporary US society.

Why American Studies ?
A Historical Perspective
American Studies programs and Area Studies in general were originally established in response to the insight that world knowledge was power, that international expertise would lead to peace, prosperity and security. Founders believed in the principle that the accumulation of language fluency, cultural literacy, political familiarity and general expertise about foreign countries would strengthen a nation's ability to face the shifting challenges of international relations, economic competition and cultural understanding.
Strengthening National Development in a Changing World:
American Studies arose first in the 1920's during a time of progressive, nationalist political activity in the United States and Germany. The Progressive Movement in the USA sought to better understand and extend American democracy. Early American Studies founders supported a focus on politics, economics, and sociology, in the interest of strengthening democracy and popular involvement. Germany, also in the 1920s, opened its first American Studies institutes, in order to better understand the politics and national culture of this rising power across the Atlantic. Britain and the Netherlands soon followed.
