Black studies: Fighting for respect
Programs 'survive because of the dedication ... of faculty'
Professor James Stewart, president of the National Council for Black Studies and a labor economist at Penn State, says professors still must defend their field of black studies. (AP) Black studies programs sprang up by the score on college campuses following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. But more than 30 years later, professors say they still must defend their field. When Harvard's new president recently questioned the work of his celebrated Afro-American studies faculty, the dustup sounded familiar to Penn State professor James Stewart. "Everybody has a war story," says Stewart, president of the National Council for Black Studies. The field still has "a very tenuous relationship in many institutions," adds Stewart, a labor economist at Penn State and former director of the black studies department there. QUICKVOTE Do you think that university African-American studies programs have the status of other specialized studies programs?

WELCOME
to AS@UVA, the HomePage for The American Studies Group at The University of Virginia. We've been online for just over four years now and it feels like we're actually beginning to get somewhere. Absolutely the best measure of this progress can be seen in the Sampler of Student Projects. But it can also be seen in the Review of the American Studies Master's Degree Program which was completed in the Fall of 1999. And it is also evident in these larger projects and services, all produced by students in the process of their learning and as a service to anyone interested in the study of American Culture.

HISTORY OF THE COLD WAR: THE CIA ESTIMATES OF SOVIET ECONOMIC STRENGTH SOURCE. John Howard Wilhelm, "The Failure of the American Sovietological Economics Profession," Europe-Asia Studies, Vol. 55 No. 1, January 2003, pp. 59-74 In 1991 a committee of academic specialists submitted to the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence of the House of Representatives of the US Congress a report evaluating the works on Soviet economic performance that the CIA had published annually during the 1970s and 1980s. Why did the CIA experts fail to predict the collapse of the Soviet economy? The committee argued that the collapse had been a low probability outcome: the CIA had failed to predict it, but so had American academic specialists. Nobody had anticipated the political developments that triggered the collapse. And it was too much to expect that anyone should have predicted what happened. So nobody was to blame. John Wilhelm regards this position as dishonest because it obscures the fact that there WERE some specialists who defied the complacent consensus and argued that collapse was a real possibility. Above all, this was the view taken by émigré economists with direct personal experience of the object of their study. Yet far from trying to learn as much as they could from the experience of these émigrés (as the author himself did), established US academics resented their criticism and tried to exclude them from the debate. As a result, they were unable to publish much of their work in the US. Instead it was published in Britain, (1) where the climate in academia was more open and tolerant.

Based at the British Library - which houses the foremost collection of American books, manuscripts, journals, newspapers and sound recordings outside of the United States - the Centre has two broad aims: to promote the Library's North American materials, and to support American Studies in schools and universities.
    Bibliographical guides
To fulfil this first aim, the Centre produces an on-going series of bibliographical guides to the Library's collections. These guides, listed below, are distributed both to academic and major public libraries in the United Kingdom and to centres of American Studies throughout the world.

    MALCOLM ROBERTSON
RECOLLECTIONS OF PRINCETON This is a written contribution, dated 11 October 1984, by Malcolm Robertson. During the hot Ontario summer of 1931, when I had just completed two years of graduate studies in mathematics at the University of Toronto, I looked forward with great expectation to my upcoming admission to Princeton University in September. Another Canadian graduate student in mathematics, Albert W. Tucker, had preceded me there two years earlier. It was not surprising that he was doing well in his continuing studies, since he already had a very fine scholastic record in Toronto. Fortunately for me, he also had a kind concern for the needs of others. I have felt grateful ever since that, according to plan, he and a fellow Princeton student, Edwin W. Titt, appeared in Hamilton, Ontario, about two-thirty in the morning one day in September to pick me up by car. Ed Titt, later to become my dormitory room-mate, had a well used but sturdy open car in which we all drove to New Jersey, stopping briefly in Buffalo to pick up another student, Frank Cubello. It was a beautiful autumn day, filled with sunshine and the riotous colors of the changing leaves, and the drive was most enjoyable. We stopped briefly to admire the campus at Cornell and eventually arrived in Princeton just before dark. This was my first glimpse of the charming college town that was to play such a large part in my life, and a joyful and exhilarating experience it was indeed. I have never forgotten that first encounter, and my feeling of excitement and awe at the lovely stately homes among the old trees, the magnificent university campus with both new and old stone buildings, acres of well-kept lawns, and even a lake and a peaceful golf course. I had to live there for three years even to begin to appreciate the richness and character

    L210 Introduction to Latino/a History
Prerequisite: none. General inquiry into the historical and cultural heritage of Latina/os who have lived or are currently living in what is today the United States. Through readings and discussion of major texts, this course studies varied histories of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and other Latin American peoples in the U.S., with a special view toward convergence and congruencies along political and cultural lines. Students will develop an understanding of the impact and the roles played by Latino men and women in the formation and development of U.S. society. May be taken for both historical studies and cultural studies credit. Full Syllabus L211 Latinos in the U.S.: Past, Present, and Future
This course is intended to provide an introduction and overview on Latino issues. The course will begin with a brief overview of the histories of the major Latinos national origin groups in the U.S. The bulk of the course will examine a number of topics and issues that are key to understanding contemporary Latinos; e.g., immigration, language, education, employment, etc. The third and briefest part of the course will build upon the previous sections by asking how the history and current status of Latinos might influence their near term future, under various assumptions. The goals of this course include the following: 1) helping its student develop an informed basis for talking and thinking about Latinos; 2) developing an awareness on how Latinos fit or don't fit into American society; and, 3) applying this knowledge to assess future possibilities.
