SOUTH ASIA STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Home About Us 2003 Events South Asia-related courses at U.C. Berkeley ... Graduate Students About Us OUR MISSION: Subordinate to this mission, but connected with it, is the Center's goal of increasing awareness and understanding of these nations, their peoples, and the diverse cultures they represent, on the part of educators, students, the representatives of the media, and the general population of the State of California. CSAS strives to accomplish its principal objective through the organization and hosting of a variety of scholarly events, including lectures, colloquia, seminars, and research conferences, the bringing to campus of a variety of research specialists, the initiation and administration of research projects, and the publication of research books and monographs on various aspects of South Asia studies. The Center is one of fifteen Organized Research Units that are part of International and Area Studies (IAS), which in turn is mandated to link and expand the international units on campus and to enlarge the university's international contributions and visibility. IAS is headed by Dean David K. Leonard, Professor of Political Science. CSAS STAFF: Thomas Metcalf , a noted British Empire and Modern South Asian scholar of the History Department, is Chairman of the Center for South Asia Studies. Professor Metcalf is also the holder of the Sarah Kailath Chair in India Studies. Professor Metcalf's current project is looking at India as the "center" of the British Empire in the 19th Century, from which ideas, personnel, and institutions flowed out to the entire Indian Ocean region. The working title of this project is De-centering Empire. Professor Metcalf is one of Berkeley's two Trustees of the American Institute of Indian Studies.

From Jesse Owens to Magic Johnson, Black Athletes have always been in the news, but their path to fame and fortune has never been easy. Only today are they beginning to gain their rightful place in sport's Hall of Fame. Despite this, problems still remain. In this article, John C. The Demise of Segregated Sports An Uneven Progress Black women The role of Wilma Rudolph ... References In the United States since World War II, the world of sport has undergone dramatic changes. The first decade after the war witnessed the resurgence of baseball as the national sport, particularly with the return of hero-athletes, the formation and development of the National Basketball Association, and the transformation of professional football into a powerhouse organization vying with baseball as the national sport. That competition continues to this day, with the profound irony that in some quarters the Black athlete is now seen as "saving" baseball In the pre-World War II years, the Black athlete was restricted from competition in all the professional sports. Only in the Olympics, because of its international nature, were Black athletes allowed to compete unrestricted.

This course will explore how America is looked at from the outside. Paralleling the idea of the 'Empire writing back' in post-colonial studies, this course considers the reactions of 'outsiders' to a globalization, which is often seen as Americanization. We will consider various genres of communication including film, advertisements and music, but the emphasis will be on various genres of writing - prose, poetry, newspaper articles, short stories and novels.
Assessment: 100% coursework.

Particular strengths of the department include Medieval art, Renaissance and Baroque art, 20th-century art, American art, African art and Architectural History. Courses are also offered in Islamic art and in Museum Studies. Local resources include the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, the Wetmore Collection of Prints (in the department), the Chu-Griffis Collection of Chinese Art (at the college), and various local museums. Majors are encouraged to study foreign languages. German and French are especially recommended for students contemplating graduate study.
