The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is using a commercial vaccine for domestic horses to inoculate its equine species zebras, donkeys and miniature horses. And many zoos are taking prevention a step further, vaccinating both equine and bird populations, even though the vaccine has not been proven effective in birds. "This is an emerging disease, so for any emerging disease, you study it intensively to figure out how bad it's going to be," said Dr. Dominic Travis, a veterinarian epidemiologist at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo who is also a national coordinator of zoo response to West Nile. "It has spread from New York to Colorado and Wyoming in three years, and that is of concern." The St. Louis Zoo began vaccinating its most susceptible birds, as well as its equine species, about two weeks ago, said Dr. Eric Miller, the zoo's director of Animal Health and Conservation. Susceptible birds include crows, raptors, flamingos, parrots and birds that live outside.

Urgent update: Help keep wild elephants safe PETA has learned that the cruel capture and export of 11 wild elephants in Swaziland to the San Diego Zoo and Lowry Park Zoo is scheduled for May despite an announcement made last September by Swaziland's minister of tourism that the elephants would not be removed and that any move to sell them would violate the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The 12-year-old elephants are roaming freely with their families on the 74,130-acre Hlane Royal National Park. In exchange for a "donation" to the Swazi park, the elephants will be ripped from beautiful savannas and fields of umbrella-shaped trees, shoved into transport containers, and carted halfway around the world where they will spend the rest of their lives in small, barren zoo enclosures that could never simulate their natural habitat. At least 79 African elephants, most captured in the wild, have died in North American facilities since 1990, and not a single death was from old age. In fact, 95 percent never even reached age 40, far short of their 70-year life expectancy. PETA has offered to assist in translocating these elephants to another free-roaming area in Africa if the Hlane Royal National Park feels it is necessary to reduce their elephant population. How big is our fish There are 18 zoos with larger fish collections, 3 zoos with same size collections, 69 zoos with smaller collections, and 51 zoos with no fish. Thus, only 13% of zoos have larger collections than us (or we're larger than 85% of other zoos). Our fish collection is larger than the combined collections of the following zoos: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Lincoln Park, Detroit, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. They all have no fish! How big is our invertebrate collection? There are 10 zoos with larger collections, 2 zoos with same size collections, and 139 zoos with smaller collections. Thus, only 7% of zoos have larger invertebrate collections than us. Our invertebrate collection is larger than the following big zoos combined: Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Philadelphia. Because they all have none! How big is our reptile collection? There are 25 zoos with larger reptile collections, 11 zoos with same size collections, and 115 zoos with smaller collections. Thus, only 16% of zoos have larger reptile collections than us. "One bear died during the flight," said Jane Ballentine, a spokeswoman for the American Zoo and Aquarium Association that had helped organize the move to zoos accredited by the group. Veterinarians attending the group of bears had seen they were in poor health, seeming lethargic and suffering from fleas and skin problems, but "nobody had thought this would be the outcome," she said. "The other five are doing fine." The bears were brought to Puerto Rico last year by the circus and their plight became a cause celebre after local animal activists and the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals waged a campaign alleging the Arctic animals were being kept in poor conditions and exposed to extreme heat by the Suarez Brothers Circus. Accompanied by a bear expert and a veterinarian, the animals were flown on Tuesday from Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory in the Caribbean, to Memphis, Tennessee, in a plane provided free by Federal Express. They were to be taken on to three U.S. zoos later that day.

AZA Species Survival Plan Profile West Indian Rock Iguanas By: Rick Hudson The West Indian rock iguanas, Cyclura spp. , are a group of large, ground dwelling, herbivorous lizards that inhabit Caribbean islands throughout the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas. There are eight species with a total of 16 recognized taxa, including subspecies. Rock iguanas inhabit fragile ecosystems and most have suffered greatly over the years because of man's activities and introduced animals. All 16 taxa are currently protected under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES); three are listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the rest are listed as threatened. A more accurate assessment of the state of the iguanas is their classification under the new International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) categories; IUCN has recently classified all but four taxa as either critical or endangered. Today, West Indian rock iguanas are recognized as the world's most endangered group of lizards, with several species verging on extinction. Zoos have long been concerned with the plight of these impressive dinosaur-like lizards. However, only recently has a coordinated effort been made to protect rock iguanas. By Nicole Litzie, 2/11/98 Leontopithecus rosalia , common name golden lion tamarin (GLT), are small monkeys native to the coastal rain forests of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But their forests are disappearing fast (98% gone since 1850, according to the World Conservation Monitoring Center) to make way for "development" and the tamarins are disappearing with them. There are three other species of tamarin native only to Brazil: the black tamarin, the black-faced tamarin, and the golden-headed tamarin. All have playful temperaments and thus have also fallen victim to illegal trade in exotic pets since the banning of legal exportation in 1967 (www.selu.com...). All are now considered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to be critically endangered. Less than 8,000 square miles of their original 400,000 square mile habitat remains intact and only 200 GLTs were surviving in the wild in 1983 when conservation biologist Dr. Jim Dietz began his studies in Brazil. Preservation efforts have focused on the Poco das Antas ("pool of tapirs") Biological Reserve, run by Brazil’s Institute for the Environment and Renewable Resources (Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiete IBMA). The reserve is a 13,000 acre patch of forest, swamp and grassland that is the largest stretch of untouched forest within the tamarins’ range. Poco das Antas was home to as few as 75 individuals before efforts began in 1974; now there are 350 (www.endangered...). Also a new haven for the wild tamarin population is Fazenda Uniao, a 5,900 acre reserve run by Brazil’s formerly government-run railroad company, which has received 23 tamarins from depleted forest areas since 1991 (Cohn 28).

By Fiona Sunquist Captive breeding is out; conservation in the wild is in "Keep the Z-word" The St. Petersburg Times "Save Our Zoo From Language Predators" The New York Times "The ultimate indignity in lexicological cleaning" The Chicago Tribune DURING FEBRUARY OF 1993 , headline writers and editorial pundits across the United States lashed themselves into major conniptions of righteous outrage. New York's venerable Bronx Zoo had announced it was changing its name. The best-known animal collection in North America was no longer a zoo or even a zoological garden. It was now, of all things, a wildlife conservation park. The press had a grand time with the story. The zoo's longtime director, William Conway, became, in columnist William Safire's words, "an unconservative conservationist with multisyllabic pretensions." Word usage became the topic of the month. But the critics had missed a fundamental point. The name change was more than whimsy on Conway's part. It reflected a basic transformation not just in the way zoos do business but in their whole philosophy. For the past 25 years or so, these mostly urban institutions have positioned themselves as temporary havensor arksto breed and save the last remnants of the Earth's disappearing wildlife. Unfortunately for the zoos, however, the idea of playing Noah hasn't always lived up to expectations. Now, after great soul searching, many zoos have found a new reason to exist that could make them major players in the battle to conserve wildlife: protecting rare species in their native habitats. "As zoos struggle to define what they are supposed to be and do, they're finding an ever-greater role in saving animals in the wild," says Michael Hutchins, director for conservation and science at the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA).
