Filling the Void By Nancy Everhart 6/1/2002
Features > Many states are taking steps to remedy the rising shortage of school librarians Kathy Ruhmann lives in a part of southern Illinois where you can't find another certified library media specialist even if you hunt for one. Despite a state mandate, Ruhmann is the only certified school librarian in her district of Sparta, a rural town with five schools and about 1,800 students. She's convinced that an aide will replace her once she retires from the Sparta Lincoln Middle School. After all, that's what happened to two of her colleagues almost a decade ago. Now two aides without teaching degrees staff the town's primary and high schools. Ruhmann, who's been a school librarian for 16 years, received her library certification from Southern Illinois University, but the program's no longer being offered. The only on-campus option is to drive 70 miles to Washington University in St. Louis or four hours to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Illinois's librarian shortage is classified as 'severe' in

Possible Action Plan for Implementing the Utah State PTA Resolution on Attention Deficit Disorders 1. Work on a plan to support the in-service of parents and educators about AD/HD
  • Get a copy of the 1991 United States Department of Education Policy Memorandum into the hands of all educators and parents. See that your school has a copy of the "Utah State Office of Education Attention Deficit Disorder Guide" (available from Department of Student at Risk). Be aware that the Utah State Office of Education has prepared in-service training materials on Attention Deficit Disorders to be used by school districts in training their teachers to understand and work with students who have AD/HD. Meet with district and school administrators about the above listed materials. Ask them what their plan is for implementing training for teachers and parents to help students with AD/HD have successful educational outcomes. Point out the recommendations from the federal government and the State Office of Education that all educators are required to have training (not just an awareness of) about the disability AD/HD. (See the Policy Memorandum and page 45 of the Utah State Attention Deficit Disorder Guide—#7 and 8 of Table 5—Recommendations and Conclusions). Invite CH.A.D.D. and/or the State Office of Education to present a workshop on AD/HD for Region, Council or Local PTA groups or combined parent and educator groups.

UTAH POISON CONTROL CENTER TO INTRODUCE NATIONAL TOLL-FREE NUMBER SYSTEM
The Utah Poison Control Center received more than 47,000 calls last year. Nearly two-thirds of the calls involved children under age 6 who had swallowed potentially dangerous substances ranging from cosmetics and household cleaning products to medicines such as analgesics and iron tablets. UPCC is open 24 hours a day all year and is staffed by pharmacists and nurses trained in toxicology. Martin Caravati, M.D., M.P.H., professor of emergency medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine, serves as UPCC medical director. National poison control officials will kick off an awareness campaign for the new number on Jan. 29 in Washington, D.C. Editor's Note: To find Bright Horizons, in Research Park southeast of the U of U campus, take Foothill Boulevard to Wakara Way and turn east into Research Park. Look for the sign for building 421 and turn right into the parking lot there. Stay in the outside right lane of the parking lot and follow it around the curve east to the upper parking lot. Park in the spaces marked with green visitor signs. From there, follow the signs labeled "news conference" to Bright Horizons. For information contact:

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
LOGAN In the Australian outback, the deep growl of the didgeridoo lends an unearthly ambience to religious ceremonies of the area's indigenous people.
The plaintive melodies of the quena flute first wafted across Andean plateaus 5,000 years ago; more recently, Simon and Garfunkel popularized the instrument's tremulous sound in a song called "El Condor Pasa."
The Ugandan amadinda, which looks like a cross between a xylophone and a footbridge, requires three people to play it. The instrument isn't used just for entertainment: its vibrations help summon termites, which are used for food.
Where there are human beings, there is music.
An unusual traveling exhibit sponsored by the Utah State University Museum of Anthropology is giving Utah middle and high school students a chance to explore indigenous music of three continents. In keeping with its exploration theme, the exhibit was conceived and built by a group of student interns at USU, who experienced, hands-on, the challenges of museum work.
The centerpiece of "More Than Meets the Ear: The Culture Behind the Music" is a display cabinet for use in school media centers. Teachers can play music through its built-in speakers while students see and play instruments from Uganda, the Andes and Australia. Photographs and text help students explore the importance of music in three world cultures. Headsets invite them to learn more on their own; classroom materials and a video help teachers create class projects such as making a didgeridoo out of PVC pipe.

I. Evidence That Quality School Library Media Programs
Positively Affect Student Achievement The evidence that quality school library media programs positively affect student achievement has not just emerged in the past few years. In fact, we have research reports spanning more than five decades indicating the power of library media in student learning. The problem has been that school librarians, like most professionals, write for each other and are published in the journals that describe their own field. They similarly present to each other at conferences attended almost exclusively by participants drawn from their own ranks. The result of looking inward instead of sharing research results where they will be seen by the board members and administrators who could operationalize their findings has been to cover the light of library contribution. As LaVerne Ireland points out, The problem is not lack of proof of the need for inclusion of professional school library services in any effort to provide adequate education, but a pervasive lack of awareness of this proof. Neither teachers nor administrators nor board members read such research.

TM 10 Description
Treasure Mountain 10 is a research conference that provides an opportunity for researchers in education, library and information science, communication, ethnic and gender studies and related disciplines to come together to consider research themes related to information literacy, student achievement and assessment, and information skills instruction. This conference is a forum for the presentation of finished research, the reporting of research in progress, the discussion of research trends and future directions, and guidance for doctoral student research. Participants will also consider a variety of methods and frameworks for research that will enrich scholarship and increase understanding of literacy education.
Treasure Mountain History
The first "Treasure Mountain" research retreat was created in 1989 by David Loertscher, Blanche Woolls, and Philip Turner. Their dream was to provide researchers in the field of school library media studies an opportunity to share their research, gather ideas, and interact with practitioners "in the field." Involving library professionals in the retreat was thought to be key in ensuring that basic research could produce benefits and applications with meaning and value for school librarians. Named after Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City, Utah where the first research "retreat" was held, the Treasure Mountain retreat has been held on six occasions since, to explore trends, discuss methodologies, float ideas, examine the goals and directions, and the stimulate thinking of its academic/research and professional participants.
