University of Utah and the Medical College of Georgia Will Participate in AAMC-CSC Management Program
Washington, D.C., November 9, 1999 Two additional medical schoolsthe University of Utah School of Medicine and the Medical College of Georgia (MCG)have entered into agreement with the Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE:CSC) to design and implement strategies to improve financial performance and productivity at their institutions as part of the AAMC-CSC Mission-Based Management Program (MBM). The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) developed the program in partnership with CSC to assist medical schools in the financial management of their resources through better understanding of medical school faculty productivity and the creation of more open dialogue among the institutional leadership. As part of the program, AAMC sponsors "expert panels" and "user-groups" to assist medical schools in their mission-based management efforts. Expert panels discuss and report on measures to assess faculty productivity and contributions to the education, research and care missions of each institution. User-group meetings allow participants an opportunity to share lessons learned, identify best management practices and discuss individual experiences and implementation processes. In addition to Utah and MCG, the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston is continuing its engagement to design an MBM system for the medical school and other health profession schools. Also, the University of Kentucky School of Medicine and MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia are taking advantage of the CSC consulting services to address their particular needs. Specifically, MCP Hahnemann is designing a faculty compensation program based on mission-based management principles and Kentucky has engaged CSC to assist in the planning and organization of a faculty leadership retreat.

ULC Research Projects: 1997-98
KULC, in cooperation with Salt Lake Community College, Utah Valley State College, and the University of Utah, conducted two studies this past year to determine reasons why telecourse students are having difficulties, if any, with their distance learning program. Specifically:
Case Study #1: Study of Factors Causing Students to Withdraw from KULC Telecourses.
The purpose of this study was to determine why telecourse students those who completed three or more weeks of a telecourse chose to withdraw prior to the final date for withdrawing from classes. Students were drawn from the rosters of 20 telecourses offered by the three participating institutions during Fall term 1997. Total enrollments from the three schools for that term equaled 991; 133 students were identified as individuals who had dropped the classes thus becoming part of the group to be interviewed. The primary reasons for withdrawing were lack of time (e.g., not enough time, personal and/or family conflicts, work conflicts), perceived quality or value of the course (e.g., class wasn’t what I expected, course work was too difficult, poor instructor, syllabus problems), performance (e.g., not doing well/getting poor grades, course work was too difficult), and cost (e.g., can’t afford to stay enrolled).
Case Study #2: Study of Attitudes of Telecourse Students Who Withdrew Without Authorization, Received an Incomplete, or Failed.

National Teacher Day is May 6
May 6, 2003 will be National Teacher Day , a time for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives. National Teacher Day is always the Tuesday of the first full week of May, so the actual date varies from year to year. That whole week this year May 4-10 is designated Teacher Appreciation Week by the National PTA . It's a time to strengthen support and respect for teachers and the teaching profession. The history of Teacher Day goes back to 1944.
History
The origins of National Teacher Day are a bit murky, but it's known that an Arkansas teacher, Mrs. Mattye Whyte Woodridge, began corresponding with political and education leaders as early as 1944 about the need for a national day honoring teachers. One of the leaders she wrote to was Eleanor Roosevelt, who persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day in 1953.

GWU Prez: Uninsured Americans Are Issue for Higher Ed Calls on University Leaders to Engage in Health Policy Discussion
WASHINGTON, Mar. 27 George Washington University President Stephen J. Trachtenberg asked leaders of the higher education community to “lend their voices” to resolving the problem of the nation’s uninsured Americans. In an address to the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, Trachtenberg said, “Access to health care is not a question solely for health care professionals and politicians. It is also our business.” Trachtenberg highlighted the need “to bring the higher education community to the health policy discussion in a non-partisan way.” He said there is a way to participate, pointing to his involvement in Academics for Access to Health Care, a coalition of university presidents and academic health center CEOs spearheading the access initiative of the Association of Academic Health Centers that seeks to make the uninsured a national priority. Trachtenberg highlighted the numbers of uninsured Americans in his address to the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, saying, “It is intolerable that some 41 million of our fellow citizens and neighbors do not have health insurance.”
