Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."
  • This web page covers a vast area from Africa to India and from Kazakhstan to the Persian Gulf. It also

History: The territory of modern-day Uzbekistan and its close neighbours have seen many empires rise and fall. The Sogdians, the Macedonians, the Huns, the Mongolians, the Seljuks, the Timurids and the Khanates of Samarkand, Bukhara Khiva and Khorezm all held sway here at one time or another. Central Asia really came of age with the development of the Silk Road from China to the West. Samarkand and Bukhara lay astride this, the most valuable trading route of its day. The riches that it brought were used to build fabulous mosques and madrassars, most of which were destroyed by the Mongol hordes in the 13th century. Much of the damage was repaired and new cities were built by Timur the Lame in the 14th century. Timur conquered all before him and at its height his empire stretched from Moscow and Baghdad, and as far west as Ankara in Turkey.
After his death his empire crumbled - although his grandson Babur went on to found the Moghul Dynasty in India - and Central Asia was split into warring Khanates. The Russians had had their eyes on the lands over their southern border since Peter the Great sent his first military mission to Khiva in 1717. It was to be another 150 years before they started to make any considerable headway. In 1865 General Kaufmann took Tashkent and signed agreements with the Khans. There were Russian client Khans in Khiva until 1920. The Bolsheviks were resisted in Central Asia until the 1930s by bands known as Basmachi, but they were finally suppressed and Moscow took control.

Jewish History of Uzbekistan
The 1980s
The 1990s
UZBEKISTAN, one of the independent CIS republics from 1990, formerly a U.S.S.R. republic in Soviet Central Asia. The Jews in Uzbekistan were affiliated with two communities: (1) the ancient one, the Jews of Bukhara, who speak a Tajiki-Jewish dialect; (2) the new one, of Eastern European origin. According to their tradition, the Bukharan Jews emigrated from Persia at the time of the persecutions of King Peroz (458–485), while some consider themselves as descendants of the exiles of Samaria, on the assumption that "Habor" (II Kings 17:6) is Bukhara. Anthropological examinations undertaken by L. V. Usbanin in 1926–29 proved that they originated in the Middle East (of the pure Armenoid type), although there is no information on their exact non-Jewish origin. Precise information on the spiritual works of the Jews of Uzbekistan is, however, only available from the 14th century onward. Jews of Uzbekistan emigrated to Khazaria and China because of their location at the crossroads of the caravans that traveled there. The principal traffic between the Muslim world and Itil (Atil), the capital of Khazaria, passed through northern Uzbekistan, and the information on "many Jews who came to the king of the Khazars from the towns of the Muslims" (the author al-Masudi of the tenth century) and the Jews who came "from Khurasan and strengthened the hands of the inhabitants of the country" (the anonymous "Cambridge Document") refers essentially to the Jews of Uzbekistan, which was considered as an annexed territory of Iranian-Eastern Khurasan.

51. UzOnLine: History
Professor Aleksandr Iakubovskii, the official Soviet historiographer, promoted manyof these notions in his authorized history of uzbekistan during the 1930s
http://www.angelfire.com/ak/Uzonline/his.html
History Culture The answer lies in the specific nature of the Uzbek identity, the most significant factor being it is an Islamic identity. This not only religious, but also cultural adherence has had lasting implications on all aspects of Uzbek life. In their further molding of the Uzbek historical identity, the Soviets revealed their own deep-seated prejudices against the descendants of the Golden Horde, since they had disgraced the Russians upon arriving in Mawaraunnahr (Transoxania) at the end of the fifteenth century. They rehabilitated and popularized the traditional Uzbek rival, Amir Timur, while trying to distance the Uzbeks from their more likely ancestral link, Chinggis Khan (who had also dominated the Russians for over two centuries). Professor Aleksandr Iakubovskii, the official Soviet historiographer, promoted many of these notions in his authorized history of Uzbekistan during the 1930s and 1940s. Even in their "token restitution" of the great medieval Chaghatai poet Mir Ali Shir (his pen name was Nawaig), the Soviet's anti-Uzbek bias persisted. For Mir Ali Shir was a Timurid, and the 1938 publications of his work omitted the Muslim praises for Allah with which his writings always began. It would be incomplete to leave this discussion of Islam's role in Uzbekistan's cultural development without at least briefly addressing the present situation. Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Uzbekistan has won its independence and now must situate itself in a new world order. Its newly-recognized status as a Muslim nation presents further intricacies in both its domestic and foreign relations.

His scientific immortalized the name giving it international recognition. He was named after the ancient city of Bukhara where he was born in 810. His father died when Mohammed was in his early childhood. AI-Bukhari was brought up by his grandfather who was a servant of the Bukhara emir. He paid much attention to his grandson's spiritual education. The boy was still only ten years old when he made up his mind to study and collect all the authentic khadiss legends about the sayings and deeds of Mohammed the prophet. Travelling through the different countries of the Khanate, such as Khidjas, Egypt, Iraq, Khorassan and others, he collected and ascertained the authenticity of more than 600,000 khadisses and recorded 200,000 more from his teachers and other spiritual people. Of all these numerous legends he selected only 7400 as "irreproachable", which comprised his code called "Al- Jomui as Sahih", i.e. "The authentic Code" It was while he was still alive that this work was treated as the Great Book Number 2 after the Koran. The khadisses in "As-Sahih" have been classified according to the stories and not the names of their earliest narrators. The life and teachings of Mohammed is represented in a significantly broader range it also contains the juridical, ethical and medical aspects. Al-Bukhari divided his code into 97 books comprising 3450 chapters the title of each corresponding to the khadisses included.

Uzbek Jews Today
According to local tradition, the oldest Jewish community in Uzbekistan, that of Bukhara, was established more than 2,000 years ago after the destruction of the Temple and the subsequent exile . Other accounts tell of Jews fleeing Persian persecution more than over 1,500 years ago and yet others bring Jews to Uzbekistan as merchants on the Silk Road in the seventh century. By any account, Jews in Uzbekistan have a long history. Most were artisans and merchants since land ownership was forbidden. And, like most other Uzbeks, they rode out the tumultuous history of the region, marked by invasions by Alexander the Great , Genghis Khan, the Sardians, the Qarakhanids, the Seljuks, the Persians , the Turks, and the Chinese, all who ravaged Central Asia.

HISTORY OF UZBEKISTAN
The earliest traces of human civilization in Central Asia date back to 100,000-40,000 years ago. At that time the people of the region were isolated from the rest of the world by ice fields and impassable swamps of the glacial age. The earliest known relics ever found here are the remains of a boy, bones of animals and tools of ancient people in the Teshiktash cave (Surkhandarya Province). Those Neanderthals lived in families and had to cope with what the wild world around them had to offer.
Seven thousand years ago first human tribes arouse. People learned how to use bronze and iron instead of stone for their tools. Collecting and hunting as major occupations were replaced by agriculture and livestock breeding. Early farming communities organized in a state-like pattern appeared in the fertile oases of Bactria, Khorezm, Sogdiana and Parthia. Ancient sources and inscriptions mention such agricultural oases of the first millennium BC.
Khorezm lay south of the Aral Sea in the lower reaches of the Amudarya River. The area between Syrdarya and Amudarya was called
