Geography 320 US and Canada Site and Situation city assignment This paper is to be about 2 pages + bibliography. Double-spaced, 1" margins, typed. Please have each city on its own page! No more than a page per city should be necessary. We are looking for the reason thei city was founded where it was; what its relationship is/was with the surrounding area (situation); if this has changed since its founding, how and why. I do not need to know the Chamber of Commerce hype.
You are to choose 2 cities from the list at the right and analyze the city's site and situation. You will need to look at a variety of maps(see below) and both zoom in and zoom out to look at the city's physical features (site morphology) and its relative location and hinterlands (situation). I have emphasized location, site and situation in class. You should know what they are by now, but just in case:
Site: This extends the location description to include the ground a town occupies. The physical features of the landscape favor the placement of towns. It also allows for classifying towns according to physical features: rivertowns, gateways, natural resources. Site can also include the street layout, the demographic patterns and city functions or zones.

    Census Geography Definitions
So far, we've been using terms like "block" and "tract" and "place" as though their meanings were self-evident. That isn't necessarily the case, so let's define them a bit further. Note: You'll see mention of "FIPS codes" a lot here. FIPS stands for "Federal Information Processing Standards", which were adopted for use by all agencies of the federal government for data collection and dissemination. The Census Bureau, for no obvious reason, also has its own, different number coding system. Where applicable in the data products, both the FIPS and Census codes will be given for a particular piece of geography. Get in the habit of working only with the FIPS codes, because that's what most database and mapping programs use. Block: This smallest, indivisible level of census geography can be visualized as a city block, a small area bounded on all sides by visible features such as streets, streams, and tracks, or by invisible features such as city limits or property lines. Many Blocks, particularly in rural areas, have no population. More typically, though, a Block will have a few dozen or even several hundred residents. Starting with the 1990 Census, every patch of land in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Island territories was given a Block number. In 1990, the Block number was three digits, sometimes with a letter added. In 2000, all Block numbers will be four digits long. There may be occasions where you need the demographics of a particular block, but it is really cumbersome to work with Block-level data en masse.

This map also has the tracks of Cook's voyages of 1778 and 1779 and soundings along his track.Paper size is approx, 11" x17; very good condition; folds as issued.

    70. America's Startling New Urban Geography
Urban geography. has more office space than all but four of America’s cities. Delaware,Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Rhode Island, vermont, and Wyoming
    http://www.theamericanenterprise.org/taeja00k.htm
America's Startling New Urban Geography By Fred Siegel In 1902, H. G. Wells wrote, “Already for a great number of businesses it is no longer necessary that the office should be in London, and only habit, tradition, and minor consideration keep them there.” By the telephone and the post office parcel service “almost all the labor of ordinary shopping can be avoided.... The mistress of the house has all her local tradesmen, all the great London shops, the circulating library, theater box-office, the post-office and cab-rank, the nurse inst. and the doctor within reach of her hand.” Wells was prescient to see a hundred years ago that new technologies would disperse across the landscape the amenities once available only to city dwellers. The United States is decentralizing faster than any other society in history. Fifteen of the largest 25 cities have lost 4 million people since 1965, while the nation’s total population has risen by 60 million. But at the same time that the large “vertical cities” have lost population, mid-sized horizontal cities, better adapted to the automobile and better able to offer a quality of life comparable to the suburbs, have grown rapidly. In the age of horizontal high-tech cities, Austin now has a larger population than Boston, while Denver, once a provincial mining and oil town, has emerged, thanks to the cable industry, as a major metropolis. If Austin is now larger than Boston, that is because the high-tech economy has created more new jobs in Texas over the past two years than in the entire oil and gas extraction industry.
