Louisiana Studies Historic Preservation Supplement
Louisiana was the first state in the nation to produce a statewide architectural heritage education curriculum. Its goal is to provide the state's children with a sense of appreciation, pride, and stewardship for Louisiana's historic buildings. The material is statewide in scope. It deals with building types found throughout Louisiana as well as those limited to specific areas within the state. Thus, the curriculum has elements which teachers in each city, town, and parish can use. In addition, the materials can be adapted for students of any age and can be used to meet the Department of Education's Social Studies Standards. The curriculum is organized into eight components:
  • French Creole Heritage
  • Pioneer Settlement
  • Plantation Life
  • The Victorian Era
  • The Coming of Mechanization
  • The New (20th) Century
  • Downtown Louisiana: The Historic Central Business District
  • Caring For Our Heritage An outline showing how each of these units can be woven directly into the Social Studies curriculum at appropriate places in the chronology of the state's history and culture is included. In addition to a brief background narrative and an informative outline for each unit, the curriculum also contains a short bibliography, an illustrated architectural vocabulary, graphics illustrating major themes, and a series of suggested learning activities for students. The Louisiana Studies Historic Preservation Supplement was created in 1989/1990 through a partnership between the state Department of Education and the Division of Historic Preservation, a subdivision of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Office of Cultural Development.

What the French call the science des origines , the science of origins,a science which is at the bottom of all real knowledge of the actual world, and which is every day growing in interest and importance. . . . Matthew Arnold, On the Study of Celtic Literature In the light shed by current trends in ''cultural studies,'' Matthew Arnold's version of culture would seem to be precisely that which must be contested: a grand edifice housing only those Europeans responsible for what Culture and Anarchy The opposition between Hellene and Hebrew in Matthew Arnold's writing is a remarkably persistent trope in post-Enlightenment thought. But the distinction between a higher, disinterested curiosity linked to the pagan Greeks and the Philistine (or Evangelical) pragmatism of England's merchant classes is also fundamental to English Romanticism in the poetry of Wordsworth and Shelley and Byron, and it is reproduced in the neo-romantic modernism of Pater, Wilde, Hardy, and Forster (see Gottfried and De Laura). Joyce playfully manipulated the Hellene-Hebrew dichotomy as the basis of his great mock-epic''Jewgreek is greekjew. Extremes meet,'' we read in

Louisiana was the first state in the nation to produce a statewide architectural heritage education curriculum. Its goal is to provide the state's children with a sense of appreciation, pride, and stewardship for Louisiana's historic buildings. In doing so, we also assist teachers in meeting the Department of Education's Social Studies Standards. Bunkie Middle School students visited Avoyelles Parish's Hypolite Bordelon House as part of their Social Studies curriculum. Afterward, with their teacher's assistance, the class produced a historic preservation coloring book.
First published in 1989 through a partnership between the Division of Historic Preservation and the state Department of Education, the information took the form of a printed supplement to the eighth grade Louisiana Studies Curriculum Guide. A few years later the material was added to the Division of Historic Preservation's web site. This older version is entitled the Louisiana Studies Historic Preservation Supplement and includes the curriculum's original units: Creole Heritage, Plantation Life, Pioneer Settlement, The Victorian Era, Age of Mechanization, Downtown Louisiana, The Twentieth Century, and Caring for Our Heritage.

What happens to the ribbon of land being created by the depression of the Central Artery may be the most important development decision to face Boston in a generation. Panel Recommendations A national panel of experts in governance, landscape architecture, and design offers recommendations on designing, building, and operating the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Go Residents dream big A pair of public forums dubbed "Community Conversations" resulted in dozens of innovative ideas for the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Check out stories, photos, and the ideas themselves. Go About the land The Central Artery land weaves nearly continuously from Chinatown to North Station, but its two dozen individual parcels differ considerably in character and potential use. Here's a look. Go Lessons from the world Boston is unique, but the issues involved in reclaiming Central Artery land are not. A series of MIT case studies looks at lessons from similar projects around the world. Go Timeline The first shots in the war over Central Artery land were fired in the 1980s. Where did the time go? Go Opinion Read the thoughts of key local players and some of the nation's leading experts on public policy and urban design.

This old photograph, mounted on a heavy card and emblazoned with the photographer's name on front and back, was purchased at an antiques shop in Kerrville, Texas. Two boys pose in front of a formal studio backdrop, hats in their hands. They're definitely brothers, and may even be twins. On the back someone has written Edward Fred Wilson. Since there are two boys, I am going to assume they meant to write Edward Fred Wilson. The photographer's name is boldly stamped on the front and back: BLUMENSCHEIN, and his address is typed on the back: 2829 State Street, Chicago. I don't have any more information about these WILSON boys, but if you can provide additional information, I'd love to post it on his page. From Amazon.com:

History in Focus: The Victorian Era l home l about l Victorian Era l back l Book Review: Author's Response Book Title Insanity, Institutions and Society, 1800-1914: a Social History of Madness in Comparative Perspective Author Joseph Melling and Bill Forsythe (eds) Reviewer Dr.Joseph Melling
University of Exeter Publisher London: Routledge, 1999, 328pp Anne Borsay has written a characteristically thoughtful and fair-minded review of Insanity, Institutions and Society The purpose of Insanity, Institutions and Society is to introduce readers to a fresh generation of research on the social history of madness. This new work challenges many of the conclusions reached in the seminal studies of insanity by Michel Foucault and Andrew Scull. The authors also seek to engage with the kind of post-modernist critique of historical practices which Anne Borsay has highlighted in her review. The distance between state provision and class relations forms one of the issues which current and future historians of the nineteenth century will want to explore further. Dr. Borsay’s valuable comments indicate that we have succeeded in linking the discussion of the social construction of madness to a wider debate on the practice of social and cultural history. We are very grateful for this contribution.

November 24th, 2002 Impressionist Irene Borg presents her vision of a simpler time through her paintings of an era long gone but not forgotten.
Her ability to organize a canvas with color is almost without equal. She approaches a canvas by painting the life that she thinks every child should have, sometimes as solitary subjects and sometimes accompanied by other young children or a maternal figure. She embraces the Victorian era as she portrays her subjects wearing period clothing. There are pristine dresses, bloomers or wide-brimmed bonnets trailing ribbons and flowers. The feeling projected is one of peace, beauty and elegance.
