Supreme Court Shatters All-Male Bastions
by Lisa Bennett-Haigney In one of its final decisions of the session, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-1 that the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), which is part of the state's university system, must admit women if it is to remain a public institution. VMI and The Citadel , in Charleston, South Carolina, were the last two publicly funded, all-male military institutions in the U.S. Both schools have waged lengthy, costly battles to retain their exclusionary policies. NOW activists celebrated the decision on the steps of the Supreme Court. "VMI will have to open the doors of opportunity to the daughters of Virginia, as well as to the sons," said NOW Executive Vice President Kim Gandy , who coordinated NOW's participation in an amicus brief in the case. Karen Johnson , NOW Vice President-Membership and a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, said, "Finally, we have an affirmation that the qualities important for military leaders integrity, tenacity and bravery have nothing to do with a person's sex." Just days after the Supreme Court ruling The Citadel announced that it will immediately accept women into its Corps of Cadets for the fall semester. Last fall, Shannon Faulkner, a recipient of NOW's 1995 Woman of Courage Award, became the first woman to join male cadets at The Citadel. Faulkner left the military institute within a week, however, citing stress from her two-and-a-half-year court struggle, as well as harassment and isolation from the other cadets.

Membership Chamber Events Business Enterprise Center Publications ... Healthcare Military Affairs Council The Military Affairs Council (MAC) operates under Community Affairs and is charged with integrating the business and military communities. From legislative support of issues that affect our military community to programs that help transitioning military and federal employees find jobs, the MAC provides a base for members to work together to accomplish its mission. The largest concentration of military in the United states is in Hampton Roads, including all five branches of the service - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. The military has always been a vital part of the Peninsula as well as economic asset. There is no business on the Peninsula that is not affected in one way or another by this strong military presence. The MAC also believes that the military adds a unique weave to the fabric of community life. Their motivation extends into the civilian community and their contributions strengthen and improve the quality of life. Affiliation with the MAC means one understands how important the military is to the Peninsula. It means one understands that the military contributions go far beyond the economic benefits. The return is a stronger community brought about by closer cooperation. Membership is open to Chamber members and also non-Chamber members if they are active-duty military, reserves, civil servants, military dependents, and military retirees.

94. Virginia Update
judge's ruling that the saying of grace before dinner at statesupported VirginiaMilitary Institute is Bill Will Require schools to Post National Motto.
Virginia Update Senate Votes in Favor of Motto Virginia’s Senate has voted to put the motto "In God We Trust" in all public schools. The vote came a day after the Senate passed legislation to post the national motto in state courtrooms. That bill requires that the state pay for the signs in courtrooms to prevent conflicts of interest. But schools will be free to accept donations to pay for installing the motto. Supporters say the cost should be nominal. The measure must be reconciled with similar legislation in the House of Delegates. Will "Hate Crime Statute" Be Applied? On February 3 , Charlottesville Police arrested 6 Blacks for a string of racially motivated attacks. Police officials say the Blacks involved set out with the intent to beat and rob Whites over a six-month period and as many as twenty teenagers may have been involved at the University of Virginia students.
"The assailants did say the victims were chosen on the basis of race," admitted Charlottesville City Lt. J.W. Gibson. Though not all of the victims were White, they attacked them because, "their appearance was white, not African-American," said Gibson.
