Judge Backs School
U.S. Dist. Judge Norman Mordue dismissed a lawsuit on Feb. 17 against the school district of Baldwinsville, New York, which prevented a kindergartner from displaying a drawing of Jesus in an environmental poster. The teacher at McNamara Elementary was justified in refusing Antonio Peck's first drawing, ruled the judge, because it was filled with religious symbols, including cutout art from a Christian magazine. The art showed the Ten Commandments, and children kneeling before a praying Jesus calling him "Savior," with the words: "The only way to save our world." The picture did not fulfill the assignment of creating a poster about the environment, and his revision, showing Jesus kneeling, would have given the appearance that the government put its imprimatur on a religious belief.
$125,000 Army Chapels
The U.S. Army is manufacturing "containerized chapels" costing $125,000 each and weighing 16,000 pounds, which include a large tent, folding chairs, lights, bibles, Muslim prayer mats, and Jewish prayer shawlsin camouflage. In addition to a portable altar and 2 linen-covered podiums, there's a set of digital keyboards programmed to play about 1,000 religious tunes. The units include generator-powered heat, air conditioning, 5 tables for religious study, a TV, VCR and coffeemaker. The Army has thoughtfully included cash boxes and offering plates to allow tithing to continue during overseas actions, wine glasses, crucifixes, candlesticks, and enough communion wafers and juice to last 180 days. The intention is to ship or airlift the chapels to soldiers stationed "in the middle of nowhere."

    The History of
    Marketing Education
DECA Inc. Virginia DECA The first documented evidence of formalized education for marketing at prebaccalaureate levels in this country appears in 1905. During that year, Mrs. Lucinda Wyman Prince, a certified high school teacher, expressed concern about the lowly condition of salesgirls in retail organizations to the Women's Education and Industrial Union (WEIR) of Boston, an organization founded in 1880 to increase the efficiency of women workers. In cooperation with WEIR, she initiated sales training for girls who worked in Boston stores. She included units psychology, principles of learning, good sales principles, and other aspects of the social sciences that she felt would be instrumental in facilitating the success of salesgirls. She was able to convince Boston merchants that her trained salesgirls could outperform those who had not received such training, thus increasing store profits and employee and customer satisfaction. In 1907, Mrs. Prince convinced Filene's, a department store in Boston, to take her trained girls into their firm on a part-time basis. IN 1908, she formally established the Union School of Salesmanship. As part of the education methodology inplemented by mrs. Prince, students attended her school for five morning a week and then worked in stores for wages during the remainder of the day. According to Haas (1969 - 1970), Lucinda Prince's program was the origin of the cooperative, part-time vocational education program in the United States.

School Vouchers, Again By Howard Simon
Executive Director , September 1998 What explains the emergence of school vouchers as such a prominent issue in the gubernatorial election between Buddy MacKay and Jeb Bush? After all, the issue of using tax dollars to support private and parochial schools has been debated in this country for decades. But like an old song with a new beat, the voucher issue is back due more to politics and clever public relations than the needs of children. School vouchers is an education reform proposal designed more by politicians, economic theorists, entrepreneurs and parochial school advocates than by school reformers. I doubt that a group of educators would have designed a program for the improvement of the public schools that involves facilitating their abandonment. Proponents have repackaged school vouchers with clever and more appealing terms like "scholarships" and "parental choice." But that cannot obscure the fact that the irreducible element in all voucher schemes is the diversion of tax dollars to support religious institutions and your neighbor's choice of a religious education for their children. The school voucher issue has also made a comeback thanks to years of advance work by public schools bashing. To listen to some critics one might believe that the entire mission of the public schools consists of inculcating political correctness, distributing condoms and promoting acceptance of homosexuality.

"While Carter and I refused to hold out false hopes of unconstitutional relief for parochial schools as Nixon had cynically done, we did work to help such schools in every constitutional way.
For the first time, I used HEW's authority to bypass state and local school districts that did not provide a fair share of federal funds to [Roman Catholic] parochial elementary and secondary schools for compensatory education, books, equipment, and other materials and services. We invoked the law to provide funds to [Roman Catholic] parochial schools in Missouri, Virginia, and Wisconsin and proposed legislative expansion of this authority. I urged [Roman] Catholic schools to monitor the performance of the states carefully. I established HEW's first Office of Nonpublic Schools, appointing as director Edward D'Alessio, president of Our Lady of the Elm College in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and former head of the elementary and secondary education division for the U.S. Catholic Conference." D.A.R.E. is a collaborative effort by D.A.R.E certified law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents and the community to offer an educational program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth. The emphasis of D.A.R.E is to help students recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, or other drugs or to engage in violence. The D.A.R.E program offers preventive strategies to enhance those protective factors-especially bonding to the family, school and community-which appears to foster the development of resiliency in young people who may be at risk for substance abuse or other problem behaviors.

Court ruling ends threat to religious schools' funds
The Washington Times, DC
March 3, 2003, Monday By: Frank J. Murray, THE WASHINGTON TIMES Opponents of financing church-affiliated colleges with tax-exempt municipal bonds have conceded defeat. They say they no longer have a prayer of stopping it in the courts. Officials of Americans United for Separation and Church and State, and Americans for Religious Liberty [ARL], both of which brought lawsuits against such practices, say they believe such bonds for "pervasively sectarian" schools now pass muster in federal courts. The last straw was a little-noted Supreme Court action last week when the justices ended the 12-year lawsuit, filed by Americans for Religious Liberty, to strip David Lipscomb University's tax-exempt status for $15 million in city-sponsored industrial revenue bonds. The school, affiliated with the Churches of Christ, used investors' money to build a library, convert the old one to offices, add athletic facilities and landscape its campus in Nashville. "It shifts our battle to legislatures and the state courts now that the Supreme Court won't intervene even at David Lipscomb University," says Edd Doerr, executive director of the ARL. "That's probably the most pervasively sectarian school in the country, and if we can't win there, I don't know any other case we would ever win."
