Welcome to the National Vitiligo Foundation Web site! This site was created to serve as a clearinghouse for information about vitiligo, for both people with vitiligo and the general public. Vitiligo is spontaneous irregular depigmentation of skin which can occur at any stage in life. Scientifically, its cause is very poorly understood. It is not contagious and is technically not a serious health problem. But people with vitiligo and their families and friends know that it can cause much suffering because of social effects of the change in appearance. Through research, the National Vitiligo Foundation hopes to find a cause, and eventually, a cure. This research is funded by donations from people like yourself. If you would like to make a contribution to help us find the cause and cure for this disease, please click on the button labeled "CONTRIBUTIONS" to the left. By bonding together, people with vitiligo and their families and friends can learn to feel better about themselves and can battle to lessen the social pain related to other people's reactions to the face of vitiligo. We'll keep you informed about the latest research and discoveries, and ways people cope with vitiligo. Use the buttons to the left to navigate the site. Please start by signing our guestbook so we can keep in touch with you!

Vitiligo.

Skin Cancer Updates
Vitiligo Vitiligo is a skin condition of white patches resulting from loss of pigment. Any part of the body may be affected. Usually both sides of the body are similarly affected by a few too many milky-white patches. Common areas of involvement are the face, lips, hands, arms, legs and genital areas.
Who Gets Vitiligo
Vitiligo affects one or two of every 100 people. About half the people who develop it do so before the age of 20; about one fifth have a family member with this condition. Most people with vitiligo are in good general health.
What Determines Skin Color
Melanin, the pigment that determines color of skin, hair, and eyes, is produced in cells called melanocytes. If these cells die or cannot form melanin, the skin becomes lighter or completely white.
What Causes Vitiligo
  • Abnormally functioning nerve cells may make toxic substances that injure melanocytes
Pigment-producing cells may self-destruct. While pigment is forming, toxic byproducts could be produced and destroy melanocytes.
There is a genetic defect that makes the melanocytes susceptible to injury.

Publication Date May 2001 Questions and Answers about Vitiligo What Is Vitiligo? Vitiligo (vit-ill-EYE-go) is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin, the mucous membranes (tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose and genital and rectal areas), and the retina (inner layer of the eyeball) are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo usually turns white. The cause of vitiligo is not known, but doctors and researchers have several different theories. One theory is that people develop antibodies that destroy the melanocytes in their own bodies. Another theory is that melanocytes destroy themselves. Finally, some people have reported that a single event such as sunburn or emotional distress triggered vitiligo; however, these events have not been scientifically proven to cause vitiligo.

. . peppar, peppar. WHAT IS VITILIGO?
Patients with Vitiligo develop white spots in the skin that vary in size and location. The spots occur when pigment cells, or melanocytes, are destroyed and the pigment melanin can no longer be produced. Melanocytes normally occur throughout the skin, and in the hair follicles, mouth, eyes, and some parts of the central nervous system. In Vitiligo, pigment cells can be lost in any of these areas. Common sites of pigment loss are:
    • Exposed areas: hands, face, upper part of the chest
    • Around body openings: eyes, nostrils, mouth, nipples, umbilicus, genitalia
    • Body folds: arm pits, groin
    • Sites of injury: cuts, scrapes, burns
    • Hair: early graying of hair of the scalp, beard or other areas
    • Area immediately surrounding pigmented moles
    • Choroid of the eye

Vitiligo is an acquired skin disease of localized pigment loss, which is characterized by irregular white patches on the skin without subjective symptom. Main Points of Diagnosis 1. The white patches vary in size, shape and numbers, with clear border. There may be an increase in pigment around the white patches. The hair on the becomes white, too. The white patches may gradually expand and coalesce with each other. They may be stable and unchangeable at the advanced stage. Some child patients may recover spontaneously at the early stage. 2. There is no subjective symptom. Erythema and blisters may appear after exposure to sunlight. The patient has a sense of burning heat on the affected part. 3. The disease is chronic. It may occur at any age, any site, and is common in adolescents. Differentiation and Treatment of Common Syndromes 1. Internal Treatment

Welcome invitation On behalf of the Vitiligo Society, we are delighted to extend to you a warm invitation to attend the third International Symposium on Vitiligo which will be held on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 May 2003 at the Royal College of Physicians, in the Regent's Park area of London.
We include here the programme for the forthcoming meeting which will concentrate on what is new in vitiligo treatment and research. We are especially pleased that Dr Richard Spritz of the University of Colorado has agreed to give the keynote address on the current genetic research in vitiligo being undertaken by the international team which he heads.
On the afternoon of Friday 16 May there will be a challenging debate about suitable treatments for vitiligo and whether or not to treat patients who have the condition. The debate will provide an unrivalled opportunity for you to contribute to this important discussion. There are strongly held views on both sides of the argument, so we expect a lively afternoon!
