Dropping the (volley)ball
by the Aztecs
W ITH all of the suddenness of a bullet serve by Costas Theocharidis, San Diego State last week announced it was dropping its men's volleyball program. It is sad news for men's volleyball nationally. There will be only 21 Division I programs next year. Its status as an NCAA championship sport is in jeopardy. Just as Team USA is making great strides to regain its Olympic gold-medal form, one of the veins of the talent pool is being slashed. Aztec athletic director Rick Bay said the decision was entirely revenue-based. By cutting the program - SDSU is now down to six men's sports - the athletics department will be able to save about $110,000. Women's sports will lose that same amount - but the amount will be spread across 11 teams. The deficit was due mostly because revenue from sports such as men's basketball and football did not meet projected levels. The average home football attendance was a little more than 30,000 and men's basketball attracted fewer than 3,000 a contest. Hard to believe that nearly 30 years ago (1973), the Aztecs won what is still the school's only national title. That team drew upwards to 5,000 a match; this year's team averaged 135.

Topspin

By brushing the ball from low to high at the point of impact, the player generates forward spin on the ball. Topspin causes the ball to dive after it clears the net, which allows the player to swing with greater force. Slice
By using a downward swing, the player generates backward spin on the ball. A slice will cause the ball to die after it bounces. It is used to change speeds or to execute a drop shot
The Serve
The server generally has the advantage and can afford to be more aggressive on first serves. The second serve, however, must be hit more conservatively and usually gives the receiver a greater chance to dictate the point. Volley While a player at the net is usually in attack mode, very little racket motion is required in hitting a volley. The player steps to the ball and blocks it back over the net without letting it bounce. Half-volley At times a player at the net must let a low ball bounce before returning it. It is a difficult shot that requires finesse. The player must bend at the knees and take the ball on a short hop.

This is the generic rectangle green torch pin that is very common, however, this pin was given to the Mayor of Athens and other officials by ACOG in 1992, and reads 92 on the back of the pin. This pin was traded frequently during the games. dP. The non-olympic Varsity Onion Ring Pin that came out after the famous Onion Ring Pin which is pin cB. It looks nice and is appropriate to include in the Athens collection; after all the Varsity was a tradition in Athens long before the summer of 96. dQ. The Varsity Truck Pin is another great pin to include in the Athens collection if the collector wants the quality that this pin will add to the true Athens experience. This pin is a must for this editor's collection. dR. FIFA Pin. This is another pin given out by FIFA soccer VIP's and traded by soccer athletes as well, during the olympics. This is a great pin for the Athens collection. I've only seen four of these pins since the Olympics. I had three, traded one, and another collector in town has the other pin.

Disclosing this to Mirrorsports , the Director of Sports Development in the Ministry of Sports and Social Development, Dr. Amos Adamu, said that while the other teams apart from football will train at a camp in Adelaide, Australia, the football team, the national Under-23 team and the Super Falcons will camp in Germany. Dr. Adamu, who disclosed that the first batch of the contingent would depart the country on August 2, however, said that the whole contingent could not depart at the same time due to logistic reasons; stressing that arrangements have been concluded by Nigeria and the British Airways to airlift the Nigerian contingent to the two training camps in batches. Though there was no official departure time table for the Olympic teams, the likely team that will first depart the country on training tour is the Adelaide bound team, while the football teams will be the last to leave on August 5. Meanwhile, the technical adviser of the Super Eagle, Bonfrere Johannes, who left the country in search of a training camp for the Olympic team is yet to secure a training camp for the Under-23.

Sports in the Czech Republic
The most popular sports in the Czech Republic are football (soccer), ice hockey, volley-ball, tennis and kickball (an original Czech sport similar to volley-ball in which the players kick the ball over a low net.)
The most famous Czech sports grouping is the mass participation Sokol organisation. Although the main goal of Sokol is to promote national health and
sports, it played a key role in the national resistance to the Austrian Empire, the Nazi occupation and the Communist regime. Soon after it was founded in 1862, colourful gymnastics rallies were held regularly in Prague until the German occupation in 1938. The Communist regime banned the organisation after its 1948 rally, but Sokol continued to exist abroad. In July 1994, Sokol staged a triumphant return with a rally in Prague. Famous Czechs in sport
