The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the worldwide governing body for the sport of volleyball, is based in Lausanne, Switzerland and led by its president, Dr. Ruben Acosta H. The FIVB was founded in Paris in 1947 by 14 nations. Its first president, Paul Libaud, was succeeded by Dr. Acosta in 1984. In Holyoke, Massachusetts, William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called "Mintonette" as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. It was not as rough as basketball, but still required quite a bit of athletic effort. After a demonstration given at the YMCA in nearby Springfield, the name "Mintonette" was replaced with "Volleyball." The rules, as modified by W.E. Day, were accepted and published by the YMCA. The height of the net went up to 7 feet 6 inches. Match length was set at 21 points. Canada was the first "foreign" country to adopt volleyball.

Now sharing space with a popular children's museum, the shrine boasts an extensive history, trophies and uniforms from the sport invented in this western Massachusetts city for out-of-shape men who thought basketball was too violent. The 44 names inducted into the Hall of Fame may be unfamiliar to the average American sports fan, but a chat with curator Ruth McCormick and a glance at some of the photos featured in the gallery turn up some more well-known personalities. Take actor Tom Selleck, for instance. The "Magnum P.I." star took up volleyball in Hawaii to kill time during an actors' strike that broke out just before he started filming the television show. He went on to be the honorary captain of the men's 1984 Olympic volleyball team. A huge photo reproduction of the ball he signed with the team members hangs in the Hall of Fame, just beyond a half sized volleyball court. The actual ball is archived in another building, along with about 100 other balls from historic matches and bearing important signatures.

Photo Gallery Voleyball History The volleyball was created in the year of 1895 by American William C.Morgan, director of physical education of the Christian Association of Young man (ACM), in the city of Holyoke, in Massachusets, in United States of North America. The original name of the new sport was minonette. In that time, the sport in fashion was the basketball, that had just been instituted three years ago to put Nasmith and that quickly had spread. It was very energetic and tiresome for men of age. LINKS CAYVA Chaska Area Youth Volleyball Association The History of CAYVA - Part 1 INTRODUCTION CHASKA HIGH SCHOOL Following the establishment of girls interscholastic athletics in the early 1970's, Chaska first burst on the scene with a 3rd place finish at the 1975 State Tournament. Mary Daly, recently annointed the "Queen Mother of Chaska Volleyball" as the recipient of the 1998 Crystal Achievement Award for Athletics, was the first coach. Mary guided the Hawks through the 1988 season, ending with 4th place finishes in the 1987 and 1988 State Tournaments. That was the beginning of an incredible run of State Tournament success. Starting in 1989, CHS has appeared in 6 of 8 State Championship matches, winning 4 and finishing 3rd once. That translates into a top 4 finish in 9 of the last 11 years! Ted Fleener was the coach of 3 State Champions and one runner-up during his 5 years, and our current coaches, Sue Murphy and Judy Martinez-Sones have guided the Hawks to 1 Championship and 1 runner-up finish in their 2 years. JUNIOR OLYMPICS CAYVA When the 2 clubs merged in 1994, the playing philosophies had become quite similar; seek the best competition possible. Only the parents' perspective on how to fulfill that differed. Originally, the Murphy club traveled long distances, included players from outside the community and focused on qualifying for the U.S. Volleyball Nationals. The Daly club stressed cost containment through limited car travel, community only players and went to the AAU Nationals in Chicago (a secondary sponsoring organization). At the time of the merger, both groups were in agreement regarding community only players and the value of aspiring to the USVB Nationals. While there were differences among Steering Committee members, the common bond was the sense of community and the best interests of our youth. History Of Volleyball In 1995, the sport of Volleyball celebrated its 100th birthday! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In (only two years after the invention of basketball), William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass. (only minutes from the birthplace of basketball), decided to blend elements of tennis, baseball, basketball, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of "mintonette". Morgan used the bladder of a basketball to provide a lighter ball with a more lively bounce. He borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the height of an average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. HOST CITY Sydney, New South Wales, Australia was awarded the Millennium Games on 23 September, 1993 in Monte Carlo. It was the third of three consecutive bids to be made by an Australian city and was backed by 90% of the Australian population. Australia is one of only five countries to have been in attendance at every summer Olympic Games since they began in 1896. The other countries being Great Britain, France, Switzerland and Greece. Sydney, Australia's largest city, has a population of approximately 3.7 million people. MEDALS A total of 300 medals were awarded at the Sydney Olympic Games. Olympic Venues There were two primary Olympic zones for the 2000 Olympic Games: the Olympic Park and the Harbour Zone. Together they accommodated 23 out of the 28 sports. The Olympic Park - situated at Homebush Bay, about 14km west of the city centre, the park was the centrepiece of the Games. It is located within a 2.5km circle surrounding the Olympic Stadium.
