The White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance , (a.k.a. The White House Commission on Remembrance) established by Congress, honors those who died for our country. The Commission's purpose is to sustain the American spirit through acts of remembrance, not only on Memorial Day, but throughout the year. The commission serves as a banner to encourage Americans of all ages to take a moment every day to reflect on the blessings of our land and to demonstrate our gratitude by giving back to our Nation. The year-long activities include a special Moment of Remembrance on Memorial Day. At 3:00 p.m. local time on that day, Americans are invited to pause for a moment of silence wherever they may be. In this act of national unity to honor our country's fallen, many communities, radio stations and public events, for example, mark the Moment by playing "Taps."

The White House
The White House, since 1800 the official residence of the president of the United States, is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. The winner of a 1792 competition for its design was the Irish-American architect James Hoban, whose dignified neoclassical plan was a virtual copy of a project in James Gibbs's Book of Architecture (1728). As early as 1807, Benjamin Latrobe, the principal architect of the Capitol , sought to improve the building by preparing designs for pavilions at either end (added that year in collaboration with Thomas Jefferson), for interior alterations, and for porticos on both fronts. After the building was burned (1814) by the British, it was reconstructed (1815-17) by Hoban, who also added (1826) the semicircular South Portico that Latrobe had proposed and completed (1829) Latrobe's rectangular North Portico. The White House was extensively remodeled (1902) by the firm of McKim, Mead, and White, which also added the East Gallery and the Executive Office Wing. Between 1948 and 1952 the building, deemed structurally unsound, was gutted and its interior structure replaced with steel framing, within which the original rooms were reconstructed. Since 1961 each First Lady has contributed to a continuing effort to refurbish the interior. The resultant enhancement has made the White House a veritable museum of decorative arts of the first quarter of the 19th century. This site has it's own Mosaic information.

At the beginning of 2001 I created a web page covering the California electricity crisis . I started with a suspicion and a few hints of evidence, that the shortage was phony and being created to manipulate the market. Throughout the year the evidence mounted, and strange pronouncements and rulings came out of Washington that did more to obstruct solutions than to help. In June, whistleblowers verified that supply was being manipulated to raise prices. From then on the story turned increasingly from one of economic manipulation to one of political manipulation. The amount of crookedness involved was beyond all my expectations. By late November, as bombs were falling on Afghanistan, that page reached this conclusion: "Let this be a lesson.

    FEBRUARY 12, 1997
February 12, 1997 President William J. Clinton The White House Washington, DC Dear Mr. President, We are pleased to present you with the report of the White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security. You established this Commission by issuing Executive Order 13015 on August 22, 1996 with a charter to study matters involving aviation safety and security, including air traffic control and to develop a strategy to improve aviation safety and security, both domestically and internationally. During the past six months, we have conducted an intensive inquiry into civil aviation safety, security and air traffic control modernization. Commission and staff have gathered information from a broad range of aviation specialists, Federal Agencies, consumer groups, and industry leaders. After many months of deliberations we have agreed on a set of recommendations which we believe will serve to enhance and ensure the continued safety and security of our air transportation system. We are privileged to submit these recommendations herewith.

    THE WHITE HOUSE
    WASHINGTON
March 19, 2002 MEMORANDUM FOR THE HEADS OF EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES FROM:
      ANDREW H. CARD, JR.
Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff
    SUBJECT:
Action to Safeguard Information Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction and Other Sensitive Documents Related to Homeland Security
As noted in many discussions during the past several months, you and your department or agency have an obligation to safeguard Government records regarding weapons of mass destruction. Weapons of mass destruction include chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons. Government information, regardless of its age, that could reasonably be expected to assist in the development or use of weapons of mass destruction, including information about the current locations of stockpiles of nuclear materials that could be exploited for use in such weapons, should not be disclosed inappropriately. I asked the Acting Director of the Information Security Oversight Office and the Co-Directors of the Justice Department's Office of Information and Privacy to prepare guidance for reviewing Government information in your department or agency regarding weapons of mass destruction, as well as other information that could be misused to harm the security of our Nation and the safety of our people. Their guidance is attached, and it should be distributed to appropriate officials within your department or agency, together with this memorandum, to assist in your undertaking an immediate reexamination of current measures for identifying and safeguarding all such information at your department or agency.
