"The full way that this is going to be organized has yet to be determined," Magaziner said in an interview Wednesday. "I can't say exactly yet how the overall function I've been performing will be handled."

Republicans, White House unite to fight new drug laws
December 2, 1996
Web posted at: 6:15 p.m. EST From Correspondent Carl Rochelle WASHINGTON (CNN) Republicans in Congress are teaming with the Clinton administration in an effort to stop attempts to legalize marijuana for medicinal use. The Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings Monday on two such initiatives passed recently in Arizona and California. The Arizona law allows doctors to prescribe a variety of controlled substances, including marijuana, LSD and heroin. Supporters say the new laws will ease the pain of some cancer and glaucoma patients. Opponents say legalization sends the wrong message. "The medical, scientific process is open to any drug. That includes marijuana," drug policy chief Barry McCaffrey told CNN before the hearing. "But you have to get through a process and demonstrate scientific validity. And in this case, to be honest, I think it's nonsense. This is mostly a 'Cheech and Chong' show for the quasi-legalization of marijuana." During the hearing, McCaffrey, director of the administration's National Drug Control Policy, reported that marijuana use is on the rise and said if the laws stay on the books they will make things even worse.

For 65 years, Social Security has provided retirement security for tens of millions of Americans. Four generations of Americans have relied on the Government to keep the promises it made to them during their working years. As demographics change and costs increase, the challenge we face is ensuring that the Social Security system is strengthened for tomorrow's retirees.

FBI director launches probe
June 6, 1996
Web posted at: 12:15 a.m. EDT WASHINGTON (CNN) A Republican congressman Wednesday accused the White House of trying to sully the reputation of travel office director Billy Dale by improperly ordering an FBI background check seven months after he had been fired. Wednesday's disclosure by Rep. William Clinger, R-Pennsylvania, prompted FBI Director Louis Freeh to announce that the agency would launch "a thorough inquiry." Freeh said the results will be turned over to Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr, who is investigating possible perjury in the statements presidential aides made in the travel office affair. "Until Congressman Clinger's announcement today, I had no knowledge that the White House had requested and received FBI files on Billy Ray Dale," Freeh said. Clinger, chairman of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, which has been investigating the firings, said a newly released document shows that former White House counsel Bernard Nussbaum obtained FBI background reports on Dale by claiming he was being considered for renewed access. Clinger said Nussbaum's request for the reports might have been made under a false pretext and might also be a criminal violation of federal privacy laws.

Nixon White House open to all with release of tapes
October 17, 1997
Web posted at: 8:14 a.m. EDT (1214 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) Former President Richard Nixon takes center stage once again with the release Thursday by the National Archives of 154 hours of secret Cabinet Room recordings from the Nixon years. The tapes highlight both Nixon's stand on key issues of the day like Vietnam and his sometimes domineering relations with key administration and legislative figures. Nixon ultimately resigned in August 1974 after the secretly recorded tapes, surrendered under Supreme Court order, showed him participating in the attempt to cover up the 1972 break-in at Democratic Party headquarters in Washington's Watergate office building.
'I am keenly aware of the problem'
At a 1971 meeting with 10 Republican senators Nixon can be heard hashing over the politics of Vietnam with Sen. Howard Baker of Tennessee. "Mr. President, I am not being disloyal to you," said Baker. "Everybody in this room can perish politically (if we don't get out of Vietnam quickly)." An impassioned Baker told Nixon that he was more concerned with America's standing in the future than with victory or defeat in Vietnam War.
