Chief Joseph was well educated and articulate in English. For this lesson, you will need: Access to additional reference materials about Chief Joseph Tell students that you are going to devote a class period to reading the piece of Native American literature included below and analyzing it in a class discussion. Begin by explaining that the piece you will read is from the 19th century but that, unlike so much Native American literature that began orally and later was written down, this piece originated as a written document. Go on to say that the piece was published in a magazine for a white audience in 1879, two years after the writer had surrendered to the U.S. government; that the piece was written by the Nez Perce leader Chief Joseph, whose father had been converted to Christianity by a missionary; and that the son was educated in a mission school. In a turbulent half-century framed by the California Gold Rush and the Chicago World's Fair (where he ran a proto-movie theater featuring his invention, the zoopraxiscope), Muybridge photographed Emperor Norton, crossed paths with John Muir in the High Sierra, documented the Modoc War, talked shop with Thomas Edison. His relationship with wealth and power was an uneasy one. In 1877, as a national railroad strike mutated into anti-Chinese violence in San Francisco, Muybridge recorded a deceptively serene city from a privileged vantage point: the turret of Mark Hopkins' unfinished Nob Hill mansion. Civil War Sites
Civil War Cemeteries West Virginia's Role in the Civil War The slavery question, which between 1830 and 1860 tore at the fabric of the nation, left the Commonwealth of Virginia equally as divided. Perhaps the most incendiary of all events connected with the slavery issue took place on what is now West Virginia soil, with the seizure of the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in 1859 by the fiery abolitionist, John Brown. His plan for arming the slaves of northern Virginia and fomenting a general uprising, together with the secretiveness with which his plan was carried out, threw the South into a panic. The future of the newly proposed state depended upon control of western Virginia by Union military forces. From the outset of the war, both the Union and Confederate governments endeavored to hold western Virginia because of its valuable salt resources, its productive farms and the strategic section of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad which traversed the eastern and northern sections of the state. Moreover, both sides were well aware of the psychological advantages in controlling western Virginia. For the Union, its possession would represent a serious inroad into the Old Dominion, the most prestigious state of the Confederacy. For the Confederacy, its retention as a part of Virginia would demonstrate strength and help preserve the high morale prevalent in much of the South at the beginning of the war.
