What is West Nile virus (WNV)? West Nile is a type of virus that causes encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain. The virus has been found in Africa, western Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean region of Europe and recently in the United States. Mosquitoes become infected with the virus after feeding on infected wild birds and then transmit the virus through bites to people, animals and other birds. Horses Can West Nile virus cause disease in horses? In 1999, 25 New York horses with neurological signs were identified as cases of WNV infection. These horses presented with signs of ataxia, difficulty walking, knuckling over, head tilt, muscle tremors, and the inability to rise. Of these 25 horses, nine (36%) died or were euthanized. WNV was identified in the tissue samples and specific WNV antibody was found. The 16 surviving horses all recovered and also developed WNV antibody titers. In 2000, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed 60 horses with WNV infection from the states of Connecticut (7), Delaware (4), Massachusetts (1), New Jersey (27), New York (19), Pennsylvania (1) and Rhode Island (1). Thirty-seven horses survived the infection and 23 (38%) died or were euthanized. In Connecticut, 4 horses recovered and 3 horses were euthanized (43%). In 2001 over 400 clinical cases of WNV infection in horses from 19 states were reported.

THE WILD, THE WEST, THE WORLD: THE WILD WEST WORLD OR THE WORLD WILD WEST Albena Bakratcheva web "The West of which I speak is but another name for the Wild... in Wildness is the preservation of the World". Henry David Thoreau wrote these lines in the year of his death, 1862, having long behind his back his Walden, or Life in the Woods experience and developing it into his key transcendentalist art-life equating concept of "Walking". "Eastward I go only by force; but westward I go free..." - he stated. - "It is hard for me to believe that I shall find fair landscapes or sufficient wildness and freedom behind the eastern horizon." Life vs. true life, civilization vs. true civilization, exhaustion vs. vitality, decay vs. vigor are some of the implications that lie behind Thoreau's clear-cut opposition between the East and the West. "My needle is slow to settle" - he would go further, - "... but it always settles between west and south-west. The future lies that way to me..." Thoreau emphasizes the intimate relationship between the self and America, the need of locating the poetical voice in America as distinctively American. He was preoccupied with the "genius loci" of America to the extent that he felt himself the voice of the place, the place itself. No wonder then, that the title of his spiritual autobiography naturally became the name of the place that made it possible - Walden. The West, or the Wild, he thought of as providing the life energy of the World. What it mainly provided him with though was his own artistic and existential SELF-IDENTITY.

West Nile Virus What is West Nile Virus? West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus that first appeared in the U.S. in New York City (NYC) in 1999. The range of WNV has since expanded to include the entire eastern U.S. WNV is typically found in Africa, Europe, and Asia (primarily in countries bordering the Mediterranean Basin). The majority of people who contract WNV develop inapparent infections or a mild form of the disease involving headache, fever, muscle pains, neck stiffness, or swollen lymph nodes. Persons with severe infections experience high fever, disorientation, central nervous system signs, convulsions, and coma. The case fatality rate for WNV is approximately 10%. This severe form of the disease is seen primarily in elderly persons. WNV also causes mortality in birds and horses. Distribution of WNV In 1999, WNV was identified in NYC and surrounding areas in NJ, CT, and MD, and during 2000 the virus spread to western NY and was found as far south as NC. During 2001, West Nile Virus became established in Florida, spread along the Gulf Coast to Louisiana, and advanced across the Midwest to Wisconsin and Iowa. Infected birds have also been found in Missouri and western Arkansas. WNV was also identified in Ontario, Canada, and the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. How is WNV Spread?

At the end of July 1999 I travelled as part of a delegation including councillors and museum staff from Glasgow to South Dakota. The purpose of the trip was to return the Ghost Dance shirt to the Lakota Indians. This was the first such repatriation from outside the U.S., and the process of the return brought to light the limitations of American repatriation laws, which did not anticipate repatriations from out with the country.

Grand Cayman iguana Cyclura nubila lewisi
By Fred Burton
Description
The Grand Cayman iguana was originally described by Grant (1940). Although its distinction from the other two subspecies was based at that time only on its striking blue body coloration and caudal spine lengths, its status as a unique form has been upheld by recent genetic studies (S. Davis, unpublished data). Minor differences in scalation, particularly in the subocular region, are evident but of limited diagnostic value. The Grand Cayman iguana is a large form, similar in size range to the Lesser Caymans iguana, although size statistics have not been obtained from large numbers of animals due to their rarity.

Vol. 55, No. 1 The Wild West Bank
By Jeffrey Boutwell On October 23, 1998, the Clinton administration helped revive the nearly expired Israeli-Palestinian peace process by brokering the Wye River Memorandum, an agreement that stipulates further Israeli withdrawals from West Bank territory in exchange for tougher Palestinian actions to combat terrorism. A key component of the Wye document is the Palestinian Authority's agreement to "criminalize . . . any importation, manufacturing or unlicensed sale, acquisition, or possession of firearms, ammunition, or weapons in areas under Palestinian jurisdiction."
Two days later, Wassim Tarifi, a young Palestinian activist, was shot and killed by Palestinian security forces during a demonstration in Ramallah. Tarifi and others were protesting a police raid, reportedly in search of illegal weapons, on the local offices of Tanzim, a Fatah organization. Less than a week later, following a Hamas attack on an Israeli school bus, the Palestinian chief of police in Gaza, Ghazi Jabali, issued orders to open fire-if necessary-on Hamas and other Islamic activists.
The death of the 16-year-old Tarifi (a nephew of a Palestinian legislator and Fatah official), and the prospect of violent resistance if Yasir Arafat and the Palestinian security forces seek to disarm Hamas and various secular opposition groups, points up the dangerous crosscurrents of violence and instability running through Palestinian society. Hanan Ashrawi, herself an eyewitness to Tarifi's killing, was quoted in the October 28 issue of Ha'aretz: "I simply could not believe my own eyes. . . . This sort of thing could have been expected under the Israeli occupation, but I never thought I would see such events taking place under our own national regime." According to reliable estimates, there are some 10,000 to 15,000 illegal weapons in Palestinian hands, ranging from World War II-vintage Sten guns and Webley pistols to modern AK-47 Kalashnikov and M-16 assault rifles-and perhaps grenade launchers and anti-tank and anti-aircraft portable missiles.

WEST NILE VIRUS  INFECTION UPDATE
WHAT IS WEST NILE VIRUS? West Nile Virus (WNV) was first isolated in 1937 from a human in Uganda . WNV is one of the most widespread flaviviruses, having been reported in parts of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The virus was first discovered in North America in 1999 following recognition of a concurrent outbreak in humans and birds in New York City. WNV is capable of causing disease in humans, birds, horses and possibly in other domestic and wild animals. The westward spread of WNV in 2001 (please refer to map above) ,emphasizes the importance of prevention measures in all states even in those not yet detected. It is estimated that WNV will invade California by  late WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Symptoms of WEST NILE VIRUS in people, horses, birds and dogs can be generalized, mild and flu-like with fever, chills, muscular/joint pain; or can show serious signs of any of the following: infection of the brain with incoordination, staggering, convulsions; pneumonia; kidney failure; heart failure, rapid loss of weight, and death. 21st Birthday Party, marquee hire in the UK
A regular client of Complete Events came to us wanting to hold a fantastic daytime party to celebrate her birthday in style (we had previously put on a 21st Birthday Party for one of her children and, unbeknown to us at the time, were also soon to manage another of her children's 16th Birthday Party followed by yet another 21st Celebration).
Her friends were very used to her lavish and original parties, and in-keeping with this tradition, our brief was to provide a slick and spectacular party with a difference for up to 200 lively individuals!
The client specified that she wanted to host a Wild West Extravaganza, with an emphasis on authenticity throughout the event, from the catering to the entertainment, the décor to the peripheral services. There is nothing more pleasurable for us than to be involved in an event where the attention to detail needs to be 100% and the client is so enthusiastic to make the party a success!

WNV-1006-03
What Is West Nile Virus?
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a viral disease previously seen only in Africa, Asia, and Southern Europe. This virus can cause encephalitis, an infection of the brain and the spinal cord. For the past 4 years, WNV has caused disease in the United States. In 1999, at least 62 people became seriously ill, and seven of those died. Since then, WNV has rapidly spread throughout 44 states and the District of Columbia. During the year 2000, 21 human cases of WNV encephalitis were reported in the United States, with two deaths, and 56 cases in 2001 with 7 deaths. In 2002, 3737 human cases of WNV encephalitis were reported with 201 fatalities to date. In Ohio in 2002, WNV was reported in all 88 counties, either in birds, mosquitoes, humans or horses. There were 430 human and 644 horse cases identified. It is expected that WNV will continue to be a disease threat in 2003. The West Nile Virus is spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. The principal transmitter of West Nile Virus is the Northern House Mosquito (

"Encephalitis" means an infection of the brain usually caused by a virus or bacteria. This can include some viruses transmitted by mosquitoes. West Nile encephalitis is an infection of the brain caused by WNV, a virus commonly found in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. It is closely related to St. Louis encephalitis virus found in the United States. Where did WNV come from? West Nile virus has been commonly found in humans and birds and other animals in the Eastern Hemisphere, but until 1999 had not been documented in the Western Hemisphere. It is not known from where the U.S. virus originated, but it is most closely related genetically to strains found in the Middle East. Are there other mosquito-borne viruses that I should be aware of?

Since 1978, our nonprofit student club has managed the historic West Campus Stables as a resource for UCSB students, faculty and staff. Horses have lived at the stables for at least a century. A major goal of our club is to run an environmentally sensitive, affordable stables for UCSB students and their horses. To restore and enhance native habitats and wildlife, we are developing a comprehensive restoration plan for the West Campus Stables area.

Restoring the Campbell Barn

Restoring Riparian Woodland and Native Shrubs
Proposal:
Our stables is a nesting area for many birds, including Great-Horned Owls, Barn Owls, Red-shouldered Hawks and hundreds of Cliff Swallows. The eucalyptus trees surrounding the stables are roosts and nest sites for these birds. We propose to restore native riparian woodlands and assure continued habitat for these birds by planting native trees to gradually replace the aging exotic eucalyptus. We will plant Western Sycamore in the degraded riparian corridor which connects the IVPRD Camino Corto property and the north finger of Devereux Slough. To enhance biodiversity of wildlife in the area and provide potential habitat for California Quail (recently extinct at Del Sol Vernal Pools), we will plant Elderberry, Wild Rose and Wild Blackberry to increase the cover, food and native shrub diversity of the north facing slope of the property above the riparian corridor.
