Maj Gen Patrick Cordingley, who commanded the brigade - the renowned Desert Rats - in 1991, believes that Iraq poses no imminent threat to Britain or its interests and that "the case for war has not yet been made by the politicians". Gen Cordingley told The Telegraph: "I'm absolutely opposed to a war. I feel very strongly that it is wrong. There is no justification for sending British troops to Iraq." He doubted that the dossier of evidence against the Iraqi regime - to be released by Tony Blair on Tuesday - would prove the case for war. "I don't think they have much, frankly," he said. It is understood that Gen Cordingley also has grave concerns about the number of casualties that could result from having to fight all the way to Baghdad. Based on his forecast from 1991 that military casualties in a full-scale conflict could amount to 15 per cent, a suggested British and American invasion force of 250,000 troops could suffer more than 37,000 casualties.

UNION TWELFTH CORPS, FIRST DIVISION 5,230 men BRIGADIER GENERAL ALPHEUS STARKEY WILLIAMS Alpheus Williams had been at his post longer than any high ranking officer in the Army of the Potomac. He had been given command of his division when the Army of the Potomac was first organized into corps on March 13, 1862. In the fifteen months between that date and Gettysburg, he had commanded his division, and frequently his corps, on battlefield after battlefield. Williams was born in the village of Deep River, Connecticut. His father died when he was eight, and his mother when he was seventeen, leaving him a patrimony of $75,000, which was quite a fortune in those days. He graduated from Yale in 1831, a law student, although his journal discloses that he did not take his legal studies too seriously. Indeed, for the few years after graduation, his main intent seemed to be spending his money; between 1832 and 1836, he did little but travel extensively in the U.S. and Europe. Finally, however, Williams undertook the serious task of earning a living and mastering his profession. Upon returning from Europe, he decided to settle in Detroit, a boomtown in 1836. He married the daughter of one of Detroit's leading citizens and eventually fathered five children, two of whom died young. By 1840 he had been elected Probate Judge of Wayne County. In 1842 he became president of the Bank of St. Clair. In 1843 he purchased the Detroit Advertiser , a daily paper, selling it in 1848. In 1849, after his wife died at the age of thirty, he began a four-year term as postmaster of Detroit. When he arrived in Detroit in 1836 he had been admitted to the Brady Guards, a militia company, and from that time forward he assumed an increasingly prominent role in the military activities of the city. He was appointed lieutenant of the Michigan regiment bound for the Mexican War in 1847, but it arrived too late to see action. He also held other public military posts, including the presidency of the state's military board, and was a major in the Detroit Light Guard.

TalonSoft has released three games, each relating to specific battles in their Battleground series (Gettysburg, Shiloh, and Antietam). There have been games that emphasize the strategic as well as the tactical aspects of the war, such as "American Civil War: From Sumter to Appomattox". There have been others as well. What is interesting is that each of these games rehash the same material over and over, but each has provides a unique aspect or twist to the battles they recreate. It is the very aura that this period in our history has that makes it a fertile ground for this type of programming. The latest entry in this time period is from Sierra On-line, one of the premier game companies in the computer world, and is called "Robert E. Lee: Civil War General". This is a different style of game from the company that is best known for Leisure Suit Larry and the King's Quest series. But, in true Sierra style, they have created a very playable and educational product. This game is a war simulation that allows the player to assume the role of Robert E. Lee and attempt to lead the Confederate States of America to victory over Union forces. The same factors that influenced General Lee also effect the player. These include lack of supplies and men, a superior army as an opponent, and the ambiguity of a battlefield victory. The overall object is to cause the morale of the Union to sink so low that they will let the Confederates leave the Union.
