The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland covers an area of about 244 thousand square kilometres. It lies between 50 o North and 60 o North latitude, and the prime meridian of o passes through the old observatory at Greenwich.
Besides the largest islands Great Britain (divided into England, Scotland and Wales) and Ireland we should mention the Isle of Wight off the southern coast of England, the Isles of Scilly off the extreme south-west, Anglesey off North Wales, the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea.
The island of Great Britain can be divided into the lowland area and the highland area. In the former lie the newer and softer rocks of midland, southern and eastern England, while the highland area comprises Scotland, most of Wales, the broad central upland known as the Pennines, and the Lake District. The highest mountains are Ben Nevis in Scotland (1342m) and Snowdon in North Wales (1085m). The longest rivers are the Severn and the Thames in England, while Scotland's chief river is the Clyde. As for the lakes, the best known are those in the Lake District and those in Scotland (Loch Lomond and Loch Ness).
Britain has a temperate and equable climate. During a normal summer the temperature occasionally rises above 27

Henry VIII
House of Tudor Reigned: 1509-1547 Henry VIII, born in 1491, was the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. The significance of Henry's reign is, at times, overshadowed by his six marriages: dispensing with these forthwith enables a deeper search into the major themes of the reign. He married Catherine of Aragon (widow of his brother, Arthur) in 1509, divorcing her in 1533; the union produced one daughter, Mary. Henry married the pregnant Anne Boleyn in 1533; she gave him another daughter, Elizabeth, but was executed for infidelity (a treasonous charge in the king's consort) in May 1536. He married Jane Seymour by the end of the same month, who died giving birth to Henry's lone male heir, Edward, in October 1536. Early in 1540, Henry arranged a marriage with Anne of Cleves, after viewing Hans Holbein's beautiful portrait of the German princess. In person, alas, Henry found her homely and the marriage was never consummated. In July 1540, he married the adulterous Catherine Howard she was executed for infidelity in March 1542. Catherine Parr became his wife in 1543, providing for the needs of both Henry and his children until his death in 1547. The court life initiated by his father evolved into a cornerstone of Tudor government in the reign of Henry VIII. After his father's staunch, stolid rule, the energetic, youthful and handsome king avoided governing in person, much preferring to journey the countryside hunting and reviewing his subjects. Matters of state were left in the hands of others, most notably Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York.

York Gate
Back down in the heart of England, the city of York is unusual because it still possesses much of its original curtain wall
Clifford's Tower Inside York's curtain wall, Clifford's Tower was built on the packed earth mound or motte of an older Norman castle which had been built after 1066. It is a quatrefoil shaped keep , which was apparently built in the 13th century, despite the claims of the official guide of its 14th century construction. It is also where hundreds of Jews were trapped and burned during one of the anti-Semitic outbursts in England.
Windsor Castle Entrance
Windsor Castle is one of the great fortified palaces left in Europe today. Edward the III's improvements from 1350 to 1377 alone cost over 51,000 pounds, which is the greatest sum of money spent on any one project during the entire Middle Ages. All of the main features of a medieval castle are there, beginning with the typically Norman motte in the center of the complex, predictably begun shortly after William the Conqueror's arrival. Its slope is visible just above the pedestrian gate in the foreground of the castle photo. The castle is of course still home to the royal family and has only just recovered from a catastrophic fire which gutted much of it.
The White Tower
The White Tower at the Tower of London was begun in 1076 as one of William the Conqueror's fortified residences. It was strategically placed next to an existing Roman wall, and its approaches were originally guarded by a palisaded ditch. From 1190 to 1285 a curtain wall and moat were added, a layout which remains essentially intact to this day. The fortress was surrendered several times during the Middle Ages when the kings found themselves without the support of the people, but only during the Wars of the Roses was it actually brought under bombardment. While the fortress eventually became notorious as a prison for the rich and famous, many of whom were executed on the grounds; its original purpose was as the fortified residence for the Norman Kings. As can be seen in the photo, the White Tower is an extremely rare relic of the medieval Norman ideal of centralized power and control.

Summer 2003 Travel Course:
Royal Britain: The Monarchy from Alfred the Great to Elizabeth II
"This royal throne of kings, this scepter'd isle ... This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England, This nurse, this teeming womb of royal kings, Fear'd by their breed and famous by their birth" William Shakespeare, Richard II, II, i, 40. It is difficult to separate the history and culture of Great Britain from the personalities, politics, and policies of its monarchs. Who can imagine the Church of England without Henry VIII (and his wives), the English Renaissance without Elizabeth I (or Shakespeare's plays without the Wars of the Roses), the American War for Independence without George III, the British Empire without Queen Victoria or contemporary royal roles without the Queen Mum? By listening to lectures by British experts on the monarchy; by studying historical, artistic, and literary portraits of the kings and queens; by visiting palaces, castles, educational institutions, and churches associated with royal rule, this course will focus on the ways in which the monarchy has shaped political, social, economic, religious, and intellectual developments in Great Britain from the Anglo-Saxons to the present. In addition to Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Hampton Court, the Houses of Parliament, the British Museum and Library, Buckingham Palace, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, students will visit royal landmarks in Canterbury, the site of the martyrdom of Thomas Becket; Oxford, a royalist stronghold during the Civil Wars; Windsor, the home of British monarchs for over 900 years; Winchester, the capital of the Anglo-Saxon world; and Edinburgh, the home of the Stuart dynasty and birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. Lectures will explore

Heritage > 'British Battles' Foreword: Not all of the battles have been fought on British soil, indeed not all are land battles, and some may not be as familiar to us as others but all have had a great effect on the United Kingdom. War is not glorious, life is glorious and to honour those who have paid the ultimate price is only right and proper. This section will attempt to provide an impartial testimony to the reasons for and the social and political consequences of each battle. From Hastings to El Alamein, from 1066 to 1942 these battles all added vital ingredients to make the modern Great Britain. The Battle of Agincourt A 'tiny' English force in France led by Henry V try to make it back to England after a successful campaign but have to take on the French Nobles in a fight to the finish in 1415. [more] The Battle of Bosworth Field In 1485 the great houses of Lancaster and York fought out the final battle in the 'Wars of the Roses' and it was to be a fight to the finish and the throne of England [more] The Spanish Armada The year is 1588 and the Spanish Armada sets out to crush the English. The weather looks bad though and in Sir Francis Drake they had a formidable opponent. This battle shaped the course of Europe.

b y Rick Steves Britain Express Review
Rick Steves’s philosophy for his guidebooks is to make them accurate and up-to-date. He succeeds with this by including first hand information gleaned while on his travels, then updates his guidebooks yearly. His coverage of Great Britain is selective: He says, “It’s my job to sift through mountains of time-sapping alternatives and present you with only the best.” This makes for a leaner, lighter weight guidebook, a real plus, especially when travelling by public transport. However, travellers who want in-depth travel information for a particular area will need to purchase additional guidebooks.

Simon Schama
A History of Britain, Volume II: The Wars of the British 1603-1776
from the publisher:
The second volume of Simon Schama's A History of Britain brings the histories of Britain's civil wars full of blighted idealism, shocking carnage, and unexpected outcomes startlingly to life. These conflicts were fought unsparingly between the nations of the islands Ireland, England, and Scotland and between parliament and the crown. Shattering the illusion of a "united kingdom," they cost hundreds of thousands of lives: a greater proportion of the population than died in the First World War. When religious passion gave way to the equally consuming passion for profits, it became possible for the pieces of Britain to come together as the spectacularly successful business enterprise of "Britannia Incorporated." And in a few generations that business state expanded in a dizzying process that transformed what had been an obscure, off-shore footnote to Europe's great powers into the main event the most powerful empire in the world. Yet somehow, it was the "wrong empire." The British considered it a bastion of liberty, yet it was based on military force and the enslavement of hundreds of thousands of Africans. In America, the emptiness of British claims to protect "freedom" was thrown back into the teeth of colonial governors and redcoat soldiers, while the likes of Sam Adams and George Washington inherited the mantle of Cromwell.

The Wars of the Roses
(this information was summarised from several pages including these references . If you see a reference not correctly cited, please contact me so that I can put things right! The Wars of the Roses were an intermittent series of dynastic struggles, lasted from 1455 to 1487 and were the last wars to be fought in England over the issue of who should be king. Known during the period as the wars between Lancaster and York, it was not until much later that it was remarked upon that the symbol of the House of York was the white rose and that the coat of arms of the House of Lancaster included a red rose. Shakespeare made much of this in his historical plays about the period and it is from this that we take the modern name for the wars.
The Very Brief Summary
Following the usurpation of the throne in 1399 by a junior line ofthe Plantagenet family, the third of these Lancastrian kings proved to beboth incompetent and mentally unstable. After a few years of gradually escalating warfare, the throne was taken by the Yorkist line of the Plantagenets in 1461.
