Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members
Foreign Service life is an education. Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members , first published in February 1996, is dedicated to assist Foreign Service family members in obtaining the best education possible to supplement their Foreign Service experience. While the emphasis is on schools and school-age children, this book looks at Foreign Service family members of all ages. There is information on the day care needs of Foreign Service babies and early childhood education for preschoolers. At the other end of the spectrum, it looks at adult education options for Foreign Service spouses and young adult family members who are not in college. It is organized in general chronological order with the information on related topics interspersed throughout age level material. This book is designed for those people who want information on a specific topic as well as for those people who want to use it as a planning tool to look at the total picture of education for Foreign Service families. Chapters are below.

Most Foreign Service parents still expect their children to live at home until college. This is not always possible, because a number of posts lack adequate high schools and sometimes even junior high or elementary school facilities. In a typical year, approximately 450 Foreign Service children attend 150 boarding schools in the United States and abroad. Because the boarding school option means early separation from parents, it is very important that the child be actively included in the decision-making process. Parents considering assignment to a post with inadequate schooling should consider the following advantages and disadvantages of a boarding school. ADVANTAGES OF A BOARDING SCHOOL EDUCATION
    • The student's self-reliance and independence are bolstered.

The number of pupils in boarding schools is declining
Independent boarding schools are to try to recruit more pupils from the United States. The international arm of the Independent Schools Information Service (Isis) believes the American market is yet to be tapped, with many families unaware of what schooling is available in the UK. Representatives from 14 boarding schools in England will travel to Washington DC later this month to show off their wares at a conference of the Association of Boarding Schools.
We have the added bonus of our heritage, traditions and quality of lifestyle
Paul High, Isis International Liz Pangu, a consultant for Isis International, said many Americans have an outdated view of British schools. "They tend to think of cold showers and early morning runs," she said. "But we think studying in our schools can offer an excellent cultural experience - even if it's just for a year or two." She admitted it would be difficult to gauge the success of the trip, but said "the time was right to tell the American public there was an alternative".

History 1: The student examines and understands major ideas, themes, developments, turning points, chronology, and cause-and-effect relationships in US, World, and Washington State history.
History 2: The student understands the origin and impact of ideas and technological developments on history and social change. GRADE LEVEL: Secondary BASIC CONCEPTS: Impact of the Indian Boarding Schools ORGANIZING GENERALIZATION: "A major conflict between cultures occurred when the federal government attempted to bring American Indians into the mainstream of society following the 1871 conclusion of the treaty-signing period. The boarding school was the primary institution encouraging acculturation of Indian youth due to the school's adherence to a regime that reflected the military fortifications in which schools were housed. Different conceptions of time and history were taught in boarding schools, and Indian students were confronted with a school culture and curriculum vastly different from their own tribal reality." quote from From Boarding Schools to Self Determination by Willard Bill CULTURE AREA: Entire United States TIME PERIOD: BACKGROUND: In the post Civil War era idealistic reformers turned their attention to the "plight" of the Indian people, they believed that with the proper education and treatment Indians could become like other citizens: patriotic, and productive members of society. One of the first efforts was by Captain Richard Henry Pratt , who founded the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. His belief in the inferiority of Indian ways to those of whites led to his guiding principle, "kill the Indian and save the man." The devastation of the Indian Boarding Schools is still being felt by many Native American people and their communities.

Crosiar 346-3135 NOTE TO EDITORS : For information about "They Sacrificed for Our Survival," an exhibit about the Indian boarding school experience opening Sept. 28 at the UO Museum of Natural History, see the story, "Indian Boarding School Exhibit Opens at Natural History Museum Sept. 28." The first exclusively Indian federal boarding school was opened in Carlisle, Pa., in 1879. Its mission: to civilize Native Americans, who were thought to be primitive and "slow." Its director, army Capt. Richard H. Pratt, often said about his students, "Kill the Indian in them and save the man." Although many administrators were sympathetic to their students, they did not intend to educate future leaders, much less include Native American skills, beliefs and attitudes in their educational model. The United States government and the schools believed Indians were best suited for manual work and should have low expectations in a white world. So, early school programs emphasized farm labor, housekeeping, uniformity and military discipline. In the 1800s, children often were kidnapped and taken to school by force. As public opinion and policy gradually changed, Indian parents became more willing to send their children to school in order to give them marketable skills and a chance to get along in white America.

Introduction to Native American Boarding Schools II By Ana Flores “Kill the Indian and Save the Man,” was the motto coined by Captain Richard Henry Pratt, who in 1879 founded the first Native American Boarding School, Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. The purpose of the Native American Boarding schools was to assimilate Native American children into the American culture by placing them in institutions where they were forced to reject their Native American culture. Abstract (Home)
    Documents Sources Tables
Introduction During the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, the Office of Indian Affairs (OIA) made many attempts to educate Native Americans in American culture. The Office established schools on reservations, in and around the military forts near the reservations, and in some cases, Indian students were sent to all white schools off the reservation. This integration took its toll on many Native Americans through assimilation, for OIA policy was to get rid of traditional Native American culture. “The United States government established Indian boarding schools to detribalize and individualize Native Americans. They set out to mold a ‘successful’ student – obedient, hard working, Christian, punctual, clean and neatly groomed – who would become a ‘successful’ citizen with the same characteristics”. Secondly, through sickness and death. While attending government boarding schools, Native American children often became gravely illtuberculosis was the number one killer among Native Americans at the time. Prior to the inception of on reservation boarding schools, many Indian students were becoming ill, and in some cases, dying from being at schools off of the reservation, thus leading to the all inclusive boarding schools.
