UK BOARDING SCHOOLS GO TRANSATLANTIC 15 November 2000 A group of British boarding schools, led by ISIS International, the overseas arm of the Independent Schools Council, goes on a first-ever mission to Washington DC this month to attract American youngsters. The schools, amongst them one of England’s oldest – King’s, Rochester, founded in 604AD – believe there are many families in the USA who have knowledge of boarding opportunities in their own country but are largely unaware of the high quality and diversity available to them in British schools. British boarding schools have always attracted some of their pupils from outside the United Kingdom, from the Far East, Africa, the Middle East and, especially in recent years, from mainland Europe. ISIS International’s Senior Consultant Paul High has just returned from a double mission to Samara Region and Moscow in the Russian Federation. He comments: “The recent growth in interest in British independent boarding schools from parents in Russia and China adds to their international reputation. There is a great international demand for the kind of education provided by British independent schools. Quality, diversity and choice are the hallmarks of the system. “But many families in the USA, even those who have an interest in and knowledge of the boarding schools in their own country, are largely unaware of what British schools can offer.”

School Advisors Boosting Kids' Success
by Leigh Ann Cahill When I left my teaching job in the Fairfax County public school system and moved to a private school, one of the duties listed in my job description was: advisor. I attended public schools as a student and spent my first few teaching years there, so I had no idea what an advisor actually was. Okay, I thought, so I'll take attendance and collect permission slips every morning. How hard can that be? What I didn't realize was that the job of advisor would become the most important and most cherished of my daily duties. Advisory programs were developed as a way to give preteens and teens an adult to bond with during a time when the last thing they want to do is to bond with an adult. Advisory programs started in boarding schools to give children away from home a "surrogate parent" but have now been implemented, in modified forms, in most private middle and upper schools and some public schools. So what exactly is an advisor? Job descriptions vary from school to school and advisor to advisor, but essentially an advisor is an adult employee of the school who is the liaison between teachers, student and parents. Not all advisors are teachers; some are coaches, admissions counselors or administrators. So basically, an advisor is an adult who is willing to spend time and energy working with children on emotional, social, academic and physical development issues. Usually, an advisor is assigned between 8-12 students who make up an "advisory group." These children meet with the advisor individually and as a group for different activities.

(Interviews with participants in State Department's international visitors' program)
Washington Twenty-five leaders of Indonesian Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantren, are in the United States to examine the concepts of community and parental participation in education and the role of education in fostering an open society in the United States.
Achmad Musta'in, from Jombang, said through a translator that prior to this trip, his conceptions of U.S. society stemmed from snippets of American pop culture exported to Indonesia. Now that he has had a chance to see the U.S. educational system and American youth first-hand, he said, he was surprised to find reality is "not at all reflected" on MTV.
Musta'in, who is from the pesantren once led by former Indonesian President Wahid, added that he was also "caught by surprise by the morality and humanity of American society."
He cited the respect Americans show to one another, and to human rights: "People don't speak loud to other people; disabled people get priority; many non-governmental organizations provide services to the unfortunate ... and the government provides the people with the freedom of religion, of expression, freedom of worship."

Effects of the Proposed Budget Reductions on the Education of American Indian Students
Thursday, November 2, 1995

Branch Chief, Office of Indian Education Programs
Bureau of Indian Affairs Mr. Robert Arnold
Director, National Indian Policy Center
The George Washington University Introduction The 104th Congress has proposed budget cuts for an overwhelming number of social and education-related, federally-supported programs, and the education budget directed toward American Indian students is not exempt. About 10 percent of American Indian children attend federally-funded schools operated under the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs. Approximately half of the Bureau schools are tribally run, while the other half are operated by the Bureau itself. Mr. Charles Geboe, Branch Chief of the Office of Indian Education Programs, Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and Mr. Robert Arnold, Director of the National Indian Policy Center at The George Washington University, discussed the implications of these cuts on the education of American Indian students. Overview of Presentation Charles Geboe began his presentation by giving a brief history of the structure and condition of education for American Indian students. The Office of Indian Education Programs, one of six directorates under the BIA, operates elementary and secondary school systems, the majority of which are located in the southwestern region of the U.S. The schools include day schools, on-reservation boarding schools, and off-reservation boarding schools. They also operate "peripheral dormitories," where the students live in dormitories but attend public schools.

The Wanapum prophet Smohalla experienced his first visionary dream that encouraged all Indians to live according to their old customs and ways. This and other visions became the basis for a prophetic religion among natives on Northwest reservations during the late 19 th century, a religion that constituted one form of resistance.
Decision in Washington Indians' first suit to defend treaty fishing rights, launching a legal form of resistance that would endure more than a century.
Congress passed the Indian Reorganization Act, which marked the federal government's partial reversal of the policy of assimilation. Prodded by John Collier and others, the government now decided that it did not have to destroy Indian cultures, and also offered tribes more chances for self-government (although these chances were carefully defined by Anglo-American criteria). In other words, Indian cultural autonomy and political sovereignty would be given greater respect.
Congress officially adopted a policy known as "termination," by which it aspired

FACE Expanded to Seven BIA Schools
Family Literacy Program Serves Thousands of Indian Children, Adults
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Acting Assistant Secretary - Indian Affairs Aurene M. Martin today announced that the Bureau of Indian Affairs' (BIA) popular family literacy program, FACE, will be expanded to seven BIA-funded schools in the 2003-2004 school year. The Family and Child Education program, which is administered by the Bureau's Office of Indian Education Programs (OIEP), provides early childhood and adult education programs to American Indian families at home and in school. The FACE program has served over 15,000 infants, children and adults since its start in 1991. "The ability to read and comprehend information is vital to a lifetime of learning," said Assistant Secretary Martin. "The FACE program is creating a new generation of readers in Indian communities across the country and bringing new hope to adult students who want to improve their lives through education." The seven schools are: Beclabito Day School, Shiprock, N.M.; Mescalero Apache School, Mescalero, N.M.; Oneida Nation Elementary School, Oneida, Wisc.; Santa Rosa Boarding School, Sells, Ariz.; Seba Dalkai Boarding School, Winslow, Ariz.; St. Francis Indian School, St. Francis, S.D.; and Tiospa Zina Tribal School, Agency Village, S.D. The addition of these schools expands from 32 to 39 the number of BIA-funded schools providing family literacy services through the FACE program.
