Beyond Transition: Ensuring Continuity in Early Childhood Services Joan Lombardi EDO-PS-92-3

In the early childhood field, the word transition is used in many different ways. Traditionally, transition has been used to describe the period of time that falls between two different types of activities. Transition may also be used to describe the time period in which children move from home to school, from school to after-school activities, from one activity to another within a preschool, or from preschool to kindergarten. In each case, early childhood professionals have been concerned with easing the transition between two different types of activities or environments.
    Continuity: a Concept Revisited
With more and more children participating in early childhood programs before they enter school, there is an increasing focus on the transition that occurs when children move from preschool to kindergarten. Many children have problems adjusting to elementary school programs that have a different philosophy, teaching style, and structure than those programs in which they participated during their earlier years. Transition efforts were designed to help ease the entry into school by preparing both children and families for the differences children will encounter.

Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members
Foreign Service life is an education. Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members , first published in February 1996, is dedicated to assist Foreign Service family members in obtaining the best education possible to supplement their Foreign Service experience. While the emphasis is on schools and school-age children, this book looks at Foreign Service family members of all ages. There is information on the day care needs of Foreign Service babies and early childhood education for preschoolers. At the other end of the spectrum, it looks at adult education options for Foreign Service spouses and young adult family members who are not in college. It is organized in general chronological order with the information on related topics interspersed throughout age level material. This book is designed for those people who want information on a specific topic as well as for those people who want to use it as a planning tool to look at the total picture of education for Foreign Service families. Chapters are below.

    Vol. 7, No. 1 January 2003
Abstinence Education Programs Even though teen pregnancy rates have fallen over the past decade, high rates of teen sexual activity persist. Sexually active teens are at risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Abstinence education programs typically teach school-age children, who may not be prepared to make responsible, healthy decisions about sex, that they should abstain from sexual activity until marriage. Most policymakers agree that encouraging teens to delay sexual activity is a good thing. However, they disagree about what approach sends the proper and most effective message to youth. Some programs teach abstinence-only and advocate that the only message children should receive is to wait until marriage to become sexually active. Strictly abstinence-only programs do not offer information on contraceptive options, except to discuss their failure rates. Another approach is the abstinence-plus or comprehensive sex education model, which emphasizes abstinence as the preferred and safest choice, but provides information on contraception in case teens become sexually active.
