This site is listed in the BBC Education Web Guide. Begin your journey on the internet with The Rail. This is junction 1360 on "The Science Expedition". Governments play numerous roles in nuclear energy and radioactive waste management. On one hand, they may be active promoters of nuclear energy in many countries. On the other hand, they are also the regulators of things nuclear. This dual role often leads to complex relationships and overlaps between various government departments or ministries. The situation can become even more complicated when several government agencies claim jurisdiction over different (or sometimes the same) aspects. To complete the picture, you often have to add in different levels of government (e.g. local, regional, state, and national). An important point to remember is that the regulatory framework and laws are different in each country. International

    http://www.consejo.org/
The mission of the Council of Latino Agencies is to support and promote its members for the betterment of the community and to act as a voice of the Latino community in the District of Columbia.
The Council of Latino Agencies' mission reflects its commitment to member agencies as direct beneficiaries and, through them, to the city's broader Latino community as indirect beneficiaries. Its role as a policy advocate and information clearinghouse on the Latino community makes the Council an effective bridge between grassroots organizations and policymakers.
The Council seeks to fulfill its mission through two main program areas. The first is the Policy Research and Advocacy Program, responsible for conducting action research in health, education, housing, social welfare and cultural preservation, which in turn is used in critical analysis to further the policy agenda of the Council, its constituent members, and the Latino community in Washington.
The second is the Membership Services Program, which seeks to build capacity and strengthen the collective impact of the Council's member agencies, in areas such as community leadership, fundraising, coalition building, and advocacy. Recognizing that its comparative advantage lies in creating consensus, articulating collective interests, and brokering policy discussions, the Council is phasing out its direct service projects and will emphasize its more strategic role as an umbrella organization that serves as an effective intermediary.

      INTRODUCTION
Most states have implemented statewide testing programs for K-12 student achievement (48, according to the most recent survey by Education Week ) as the primary means of accountability to the public.
State testing programs vary in terms of grades required to participate in the test administration, content, and format of the tests. Some states use well-known standardized tests that are purchased directly from test publishers; some state education agencies develop their tests internally in order to match the curriculum, whereas others may contract with outside vendors to do so.

State Legislators Eager to Work with President Bush on Education Reform
High standards, accountability follow state education policy trends
WASHINGTON, D.C. President George W. Bush 's recently released education reform proposal is a reflection of many of the policy positions of the nation's state lawmakers, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) said today. "Overall, state legislators should be heartened by President Bush's education proposal," said Virginia Delegate James Dillard , chair of NCSL's Education, Labor and Workforce Development Committee . "President Bush's plan is pragmatic and results oriented. It also emphasizes accountability, something state policymakers have been doing for a decade." Over the years, state legislatures have established high academic standards, implemented accountability measures and expanded charters schools in nearly all 50 states. President Bush's proposal, which was modeled after Texas' education reform measures, echoes similar themes.
