Young Journalists Development Program Programs
Newspaper Advisers Seminars The Washington Post Young Journalists Development Program and the Newseum Education Center co-sponsored Newspaper Advisers Seminars, a free series of monthly classes for inexperienced high school newspaper advisers. The eight classes covered publication production and journalism education and gave teachers a network of mentors, professional journalists and fellow teachers. High School College 2001 Highlights Facing the retirement of many experienced advisers and other turnover problems, Newseum Education Director Leonard Hall and YJDP Director Dorothy Gilliam combined resources. The Newseum Education Center, which hosted the seminars, mailed registration brochures to every high school in the metropolitan area. Gilliam secured Washington Post professionals to lead sessions, and Carol Lange, coordinator of the seminars, recruited experienced high school journalism educators from Virginia and Maryland to form teaching teams. "Far too often, school publications advisers are left to fend for themselves with little direction, little guidance and, frequently, little experience. The Newspaper Advisers Seminars offered some much-needed support and encouragement to those teachers," Hall said.

To: Berkeley P.T.A. Council From: Superintendent Michele Lawrence Subject: Berkeley Unified School District Budget Changes June 2001 to December 2001 Since January 17, 2002, many questions have been asked regarding the differences between the June adopted 2001-02 budget and the December 18, 2002 basis used by FCMAT in determining the district fiscal condition. The Alameda County Office rejected the original adopted budget, in large part due to the absence of federal, state, and local grant and entitlement program revenue and expenditures. FCMAT has compiled the following detail information to help clarify the revenue and expenditure differences. Revenues Revenue limit sources No changes Federal Revenue difference $ 6,807,840 Improving America's Schools Act $1,344,067

Paraguay IMET: Paraguay The following description of the IMET program for Paraguay comes from the U.S. State Department's April 2002 FY2003 Congressional Budget Justification for Foreign Operations: International Military Education and Training (IMET) funds will help promote democracy in Paraguay and regional stability by increasing the professionalism of military personnel and continuing to develop military respect for civilian authority. IMET funds will be used to train Paraguayan officials at various military schools. Anticipated courses include the international officers’ school, civil-military operations, and sustaining democracy. By increasing military professionalism, such training also reduces the likelihood that civilians will seek to involve the military in politics.
